East is East - Main St
As evening descends upon the vibrant city of Vancouver, Chai Lounge comes to life like the courts of the eastern Raja's. Imagine a warm, dreamy and visually arresting venue where global sounds cascade the room over the din of lively conversations. Spicy scents waft from the kitchen followed by an abundance of delicious trans-himalayan cuisine.
Chai Lounge is our landmark location. There is no place like it in Vancouver, and visitors from near and far marvel at the ornate carpets, ceiling mandala's, and the nature-inspired furnishings.
The large central stage features a rotating line-up of world class musicians and dancers. We ask for a small patronage fee of $3 per person which goes to support all the live local music at East is East. Because we are very busy we hold tables for 2 hours. We look forward to serving you.
"East is East is a dream borne from the minds and hearts of Mustafa and Razaviah, siblings of Afghan descent. Escaping Afghanistan as a family during the soviet war, they relocated in India and traveled throughout the country absorbing the culture through it's language, art and cuisine. Upon migrating to Canada, their immigrant experience confirmed to them the importance of creating spaces where a vibrant cultural exchange could take place. Their fusion approach to food, ambiance, music and art" inform the experience of this delightful eatery (quote lifted from their website). And what an experience it is!
I recommend the Chai Feast if this is your first visit: select a soup, salad and any two main dishes then after if there is space you can continue to select other dishes. Each dish is a bodega-sized serving and all your initial selections come on a circular tray which as we found our can be rotated like a lazy-susan. All initial and post selections are for a single price ($35 I think). Accompanying the meal is a floor show as well. We went on a Saturday so it was Flamenco night. Eating here was definitely a cultural and culinary experience!
East is East never disappoints.
We feel welcome every time.
My family and I came to East is East for Fathers day dinner. We all ordered the chai feast and it was awesome. We got to try so many different dishes and they were all very delicious. The server was very friendly and helpful. My only complaint would be that we were sat in a corner at a upper level where we could not see the live performance, and that was the main reason why I wanted to bring my family there. They charged $3 per person for the performance, yet, we could not see it, could only hear it.
My experience was great! I made a reservation earlier in the week but needed to change the time and they were accommodating. They called again to reconfirm and provide addition information regarding gratuity for live music. When I arrived early they happened to have samples available to passers by and i ended up ordering it as my main meal. Staff were able to make great recommendations. Music and Ambiance was perfectly comfortable. Although we had a time limit, because it wasn’t too crowded they didn’t strictly force us to leave and allowed our small group to enjoy ourselves over delicious chai.
The food is delicious and they have the best chai tea!
Always a lovely time with beautiful performances and great food at East is East!
Seats were not comfy but show was great, so was give good
This is the fourth time we have been there and perhaps our last. For the money, what we received on our plates, was not worth it. The wraps hardly had any rice in it and the Lamb was tough. We got such smaller portions than before and the taste was not as flavourful as remembered.
Wonderful experience - we hadn't been before and loved the ambiance as soon as we walked in. A bit of an explanation about how the menu worked might be helpful to newbies like us! We enjoyed our meal and the service was excellent. We will be back
Both of us got sick after eating there. The ambience was more noisy than how they portray it to be musically ambient. Given they are serving Indian food which comes in relatively large bowls and plates, the tables are way too small and forks and knives kept on falling down. And thanks to that, I got a nice curry stain on my trench as a fork fell on it.
Beautiful place to enjoy a good meal. The flavors were authentic, ambiance was eclectic and service was outstanding. Not the cheapest option in town, there are buffet choices that are half the price for such food. However, you would be getting half the quality as well. Live music is themed and at once relaxing yet stirring. Great setting for any occasion.
Small benches if you get side tables near their live music stage. To have a comfortable meal, sit at a table without a small bench. We asked to be seated elsewhere and they had no problem moving us.
All in all, wonderful experience.
Came here for a birthday dinner. Food was fantastic and so was the atmosphere.
This is my favourite spot in all of Vancouver. Yes there is a surcharge on the entertainment and yes the feast may be perceived as pricey, but if you want to have a delicious dinner where you take your time to eat and converse, this is your place!
It was my sister's 50th birthday and we wanted to go somewhere special. One of her friends recommended east is east as one of her top 2 favourite locations to eat in the lower mainland, so I felt that would be a good place to go! Upon entry, we were offered a sample of the soy chai tea made with green tea...FABULOUS...as well as a piece of the traditional Afghani stuffed bread (roti) with a marvelous cilantro and mint chutney so we were already pleased before we were even seated! We ordered the Feast which comes with salad, dahl, 2 different types of basmati rice, roti, the stuffed bread with 3 sauces and a choice of 2 dishes...to START!! Little did we know it was "all you can eat" for lack of better terminology, and So Worth It! We were able to sample at least 6 different dishes and didn't stop there! We also enjoyed a shared dessert which included rice pudding, ice cream with rose water and cardamom topped with a honey soaked, delicious donut! Oh...and I can't forget the 2 full sized Afghani soy chai tea! Absolute decadence!!! Service was Excellent! Ambience perfect AND clean washroom facilities to boot! We will DEFINITELY be returning as soon as possible! ❤
Great food with each plate offering a very different sensation to the pallet
The price per portion is not fair. I went there for the first time for lunch 2 weeks prior and the portion was larger and filling.
For dinner ordered two entrees, a beer and a soda and before tip turned out to be $75 ($4 for entertainment/musicians added to bill). Part of the ordered consisted of 2 small wraps, we were served wraps that were wrong. It was difficult to find someone to attend to the mix up. My partner ate most of his chicken kebabs by the time someone came along. It's a casual restaurant with mediocre food, expecting fine dining payment. For $85 we shouldnt have left in search of a follow up dinner. Not to mention sore bodies from sitting in uncomfortable seats with tiny, cramped tables. You'll see.
Great food and amazing service! Highly recommend trying out if you’ve never been!
Price and quality of food are excellent. Complimentary appies and tea were offered while waiting for our table. Tables and seating can be awkward to access. Spicing was excellent, but the temperature of the meal was warm, not hot. overall definitely worth a visite.
Heard a lot of good things about East is East. We went for a staff dinner and it was good for that. I thought the food was average but we did enjoy the Chai Feast because everyone could order whatever they wanted and as much as they wanted. They have live music but they charge you $3 per person. Personally, I don't think the customer should pay for something that is an added value from the restaurant. Overall, I was glad to try it, but it's not a top choice for me.
Definitely one of the best restaurants in the City. It's in our Top Three list.
Service was fine, but the food was underwhelming and overpriced. I enjoy their tea, but
As a group of 4 we thoroughly enjoyed our evening at East is East. The food was amazing, service was great and the entertainment very good.
We did find the tables and seating on the small side especially when neighbouring patrons encroached in our space.
Other than that it was an enjoyable evening.
Think it is a bit expensive relative to what you get. Food is quite good, would not say outstanding
Went to see flamenco. Excellent show! These people support artists, mostly musicians I believe. They could charge more (only 3 per person). But this keeps it affordable so thank you!
Loved it! Always such good food and an amazing time!
Amazing place had great time!!!
Would recommend .
Great food, great music and great service. Our server, Laura, was super attentive, quick and friendly. Her recommendations were excellent!
Overall the food was nice and the chai feast was a pretty good deal. However, the service was extremely slow while they had a 2-hour time limit for our table. There were live music and charge us $3 for it as patronage fee.
Loved it , staff was so helpful , we all had a blast
Decor is fun and interesting. Food was very tasty except some a bit salty. With the Chef’s feast you can taste everything for a reasonable $35. Server was very friendly and helpful re the food choices.
Very loud and hard to converse despite being by the window and a 4 1/2 foot divider between us and main seating.
So many rules! I was told when I booked, then received far too many reminders and someone called and went over the rules again. I felt disheartened before I even arrived. Food was pretty good but the service wasn't the best. Never did receive a knife to cut my meat.
Relaxed comfortable seating and warm decor that provided a welcoming place for friends to gather and catch up.
A delightful place to eat and sip. You are greeted with yummy appetizer samples and made to feel welcome. Chai, BC wines and wonderful spicy and/or creamy food. Bring your Vegan and gluten free friends too as it's not just for chicken and seafood lovers.
We've already begun recommending East to several people. My wife and i had an awesome time...very, very impressed.
Welcoming on entry. A variety of food options for any taste. Nothing we had was very spicy but all was flavourful. Be prepared for cramped seating and tables - all part of the experience.
Ten of us out for my son’s birthday. Everyone enjoyed the evening. Madeleine took great care of us.
It was a perfect date night choice: Dinner and Show! Chai feast was amazing. Very happy to support the musician as well. will return for sure.
Such a great experience! When I phoned to update the reservation, there were no issues. We arrived and were seated right away. The food took no time to come out, and our servers were sweet and very friendly. It was a wonderful way to celebrate my birthday, and I enjoy coming back!
The food was very good. We had a party of 14 people though, and the food came at all different times. It was a shame not to eat together. It was a busy Saturday night and the restaurant was loud. We could not really hear the entertainment from our table. The roti wraps and prawn masala were yummy. We enjoyed a good night overall.
Everything was fine, except for having a reservation for 6:45 and then waiting until 7:20 or so to be seated. And seeing others who arrived after seated before us.
