East is East - Main St
As evening descends upon the vibrant city of Vancouver, Chai Lounge comes to life like the courts of the eastern Raja's. Imagine a warm, dreamy and visually arresting venue where global sounds cascade the room over the din of lively conversations. Spicy scents waft from the kitchen followed by an abundance of delicious trans-himalayan cuisine.
Chai Lounge is our landmark location. There is no place like it in Vancouver, and visitors from near and far marvel at the ornate carpets, ceiling mandala's, and the nature-inspired furnishings.
The large central stage features a rotating line-up of world class musicians and dancers. We ask for a small patronage fee of $3 per person which goes to support all the live local music at East is East. Because we are very busy we hold tables for 2 hours. We look forward to serving you.
The atmosphere is fun, good is incredible, but the service was lacking.
With reservations, there were 4 servers/hostesses at the front but it took quite a while to even be acknowledged, let alone seated. They seemed really unorganized.
Where the service lacked, the food made up for it! Bolani was delicious, as was the prawn masala. Chicken kebabs were great!
Best to get a table in the middle closer to the stage. We could not see the stage from our table that was located on a heavy traffic hallway. Lots of busgirls racing up and down the isle with no waitress in sight. The lamb curry was excellent. The Quinoa salad a bit dry. Overall a pleasant evening but I would be more picky about where to sit next time.
The Chai Feast is amazing and worth the value. The only issue that we experienced was that when I booked they called to confirm that there would be live music, which is wonderful, however my dad is a bit hard of hearing and we wanted to visit so we requested to be seated as far away as possible which said we would be on the opposite side. When we arrived we were seated right next to the live music and all other tables on the opposite side were unfortunately taken. We still had a lovely time and enjoyed the music however it was a bit difficult to hear each other especially for my dad.
The food and the service were great. Live music and dancing were way more than expected. I had a very good time celebrating my birthday with my friends here.
This place is excellent! Probably my favorite restaurant in Vancouver. Love it! The music is lovely and not to load so you can easily enjoy conversation with a friend or soak up the music as you like. It is a little expensive ($35 each plus drinks, cover, etc.) but I will definitely go again!
Great food and value for your money. The seats are uncomfortable with benches and hard chairs. Nice atmosphere though.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at East is East. Our group of 5 included 2 vegans and 1 person with an extreme gluten allergy, and we all ate safely and with great pleasure. The flavors of the foods were amazing, and the portions were adequate to large. In addition, we were entertained by flamenco musicians and dancers during most of our 2 hour visit for only $3/person. The show was amazing! All in all, every member of our group was thrilled with the experience. Highly recommend this restaurant!
The music was super fun and belly dancing was amazing. The food was auch a great culinary blend of regions. Outstanding.
Food is amazing. Everything thing is actually. Service was fantastic. Highly recommended
Fantastic food, great music, and friendly staff. We had a great time and will go back!
One of my all time Vancouver faves 🥰
We were pleasantly surprised with the concept of this restaurant. We made a reservation for our 30th Anniversary, and what a great choice. The food was excellent, and was not your typical overly-sauced Indian food. The flavours were such a nice change from the usual. Staff was super friendly. We asked to change tables at one point to avoid the a/c blowing on us, and it wasn't a problem at all. We finished our meal but had about a half hour until the entertainment started, and it wasn't a problem to stay to watch the band. Absolutely lovely restaurant. We had a bit of a drive to get there as we live in the Tri-Cities but we'll be back!
I booked the venue for a birthday.
The staff did not bother to bring a little cake or something, or even say happy birthday to the table.
The staff were very pushy trying to make us order more or leave, although we got the Chai Feast.
The food was awesome and music was excellent.
It was our anniversary and we both love the place and everybody where very friendly I definitely recommended
Great food, super service, fantastic mix of live music in a gorgeous setting. Our family of 4 loved it.
The food was excellent and the service was very good. I was having lunch with a friend. We both had the "roll" that comes with the salad and a very delicious soup. The "Gypsy" roll, filled with a delicious eggplant mixture was outstanding. We followed with rice pudding for dessert. Excellent. I also enjoyed being greeting with a small "taster" of chai tea. I will look forward to coming back soon and trying other items off the menu.
A great dining experience. Some amazingly talented live musicians amped up an already very warm and welcoming ambiance. The staff there were great; polite, amicable, and helpful. Finally, the food was delicious, the Chai relaxing... All in all, I definitely recommend.
From the moment you step into the restaurant, the service is warm, fast and friendly. The chai is AMAZING
Couldn’t believe all the options available on the tasting menu. My favorite was the lamb curry and their pumpkin with mango curry cooked in coconut milk We had it on Afghan rice
My son had his first visit yesterday and he only tried the chai as we walked in and asked me to reserve for Thursday so we could bring his grandparents.
Love this restaurant and apparently so does everyone else as it is always full. Great food and service. Thank you, East is East for always being reliable and enjoyable.
Excellent choice of vegetarian and meat food, most of the food is spicy, kind of expected east cuisine, good and fast service. The restaurant have evening shows
Service was very good , very friendly server.
Food is great as always.
Seating on the wood stools is not very comfortable.
Music and dancing was somewhat entertaining although from our seats we couldn’t really see .
Don’t like the fact that ask you to pay extra for the entertainment , we felt it should just be built into the cost of the food etc...
We had a wonderful time at east is east we had been there once before and it was even better than I remember! The waiting staff is attentive and the chai tea is amazing can’t wait to go back for some more Lamb Curry! Highly recommend if you’re looking for something for your next date night or just upscale tea with a friend.
Food was good and great chai tea. Would liked to have know that the flamenco show doesn't actually start until 9:00 - would have reserved a bit later. The smaller chairs are uncomfortable.
Amazing restaurant. Definitely will come again.
The food is great and the music is fun. I highly recommend this place.
A nicely relaxed place and staff and ambience cause you to take a more relaxed dining attitude, much like you would feel if being in a home in the Mid East or Near East where you are a 'guest' more then a 'customer'. The ability and pleasure to have time and space to eat AND converse with your companions in a relaxed atmosphere can't be overestimated.
The LAMB KABOB was a bit overcooked which made it a bit chewy, but this was likely just a Cook's error because everything else was done perfectly and the two of us had nothing but praise for the items we ordered and very pleased with the quality provided.
What an adventure.. Really delighted by the hospitality, the wanderous delicious food, not to mention the festive atmosphere. Thank you for creating a wonderful night.
East is East on Main St. is amazing! The food is exquisite, and for a bit of a steeper price range you really get a great value. The service was friendly, attentive, and fun! I recommend the Chai Feast, as it is unlimited, and very good. My sister and I celebrated our birthdays there and got 2 complimentary desserts which was a very nice and caring touch!
Our server was very nice and helpful but I would get the servers to explain the menu in more detail upon first greeting with regard to recommendations and how the two side dishes/$24.95 lunch plate option works.
The place explodes with culture and authentic ambiance! The food is wonderful and it’s very reasonably priced!
Went here with a group of 4. The food was excellent. Good assortment of Afghan/Middle Eastern food.
The ambiance/decor was very good.
The service on the other hand needs improvement. From when we first received our menus until when we paid for our bill, the service was very slow.
We also did not like the $3 “optional surcharge” for their music and dance/show. We stated we did not want to pay the surcharge, yet it still appeared on the bill. It was not anything worth paying for in my opinion. Stick to the food and improve your service instead.
Always good experience! Food is good, ambiance is good and live music adds on to the experience!
Met our expectations. Overall a pleasant evening.
Very nice atmosphere! The live performance was great and the artists are getting paid. The food quality is great but be ready to have a lot of spices!
Great place. Amazing original live music. Food is excellent as well as service. One of my favourites in town for sure.
$$$$ I found the food expensive maybe because I’m used to this kind of food (I mean rice dish shouldn’t be that expensive). Don’t like the fact we have forced to pay $3 per person for an artist that played weird guitar for approximately 20min during the entire time we were there and we couldn’t hear because of the noise. We’ll order for to go next time if there is a next time...
I love coming here and bringing friends and family. It’s a fun atmosphere, with a unique outlook.
"East is East is a dream borne from the minds and hearts of Mustafa and Razaviah, siblings of Afghan descent. Escaping Afghanistan as a family during the soviet war, they relocated in India and traveled throughout the country absorbing the culture through it's language, art and cuisine. Upon migrating to Canada, their immigrant experience confirmed to them the importance of creating spaces where a vibrant cultural exchange could take place. Their fusion approach to food, ambiance, music and art" inform the experience of this delightful eatery (quote lifted from their website). And what an experience it is!
I recommend the Chai Feast if this is your first visit: select a soup, salad and any two main dishes then after if there is space you can continue to select other dishes. Each dish is a bodega-sized serving and all your initial selections come on a circular tray which as we found our can be rotated like a lazy-susan. All initial and post selections are for a single price ($35 I think). Accompanying the meal is a floor show as well. We went on a Saturday so it was Flamenco night. Eating here was definitely a cultural and culinary experience!
East is East never disappoints.
We feel welcome every time.
