East India Co. Grill & Bar Ratings and Reviews
East India Company is rapidly becoming one of our favorite places for dinner before a play or the symphony. The food is outrageously good, the menu is huge and varied, the atmosphere is warm and cozy, the noise level is low (thank you, thank you, thank you), and the service is always exceptional.
This was one of the worst meals I have ever had in Portland. As I have traveled in India and lived in Asia and had many spicy and varied Indian dishes, this was the poorest one I have experienced. From the opening chai with no flavor, to a lamb vindaloo so hot it was inedible, to paneer in bland tomato sauce, the entire meal was a disaster. When I asked the waitress if the chef would be willing to exchange any of these items for another one, he was unwilling to do so. Not surprising at lunchtime, we were about the only people at the restaurant. I hope this review
is printed publicly for others to see. I think open table should take them off their list!!
East India has been the selected restaurant for both of my sons birthdays this year. We found it to celebrate a birthday. Since then we've visited for new jobs, multiple birthdays and when friends come to town.
Possibly the best tasting Salmon I've ever had. I'm a pescatarian so I eat Salmon weekly. There isn't anyone that has a better tasting Mango Lassi either.
Thanks for being our go-to restaurant.
Always enjoy the food here; service is good. It's worthwhile getting a reservation because they are busier than before, and you're more likely to get a booth rather than a table (if you prefer).
We do miss a potato-and-spinach dish that used to be on the menu. The first time we noticed it missing, they made it up for us anyway, but we don't ask anymore.
Our food came out really fast faster than we had anticipated everything tasted great. Our order was done correctly. The usher, the bus boy and the waiter were all polite and did a great Job. I wish that I knew their names. We had ordered Papdi Chaat, Vegetarian Vindaloo. Salt lassi, Fried okra and onion and Rasmalai. Scrumptious! Vindaloo was a little spicy for my taste but for spice lovers this is great. My Husband like very spicy food so he absolutely loved it. For mildly spicy food okra and onion is very good okra was done rightly and had no slime in it. Delicious!!!!!!
Had a good time at this restaurant. The biryanis is delicious and I had lots left over to take home. Our waiter was great but i’m Miffed at the hostess. She sat us in a booth by the restroom. When I asked for a larger booth on the upper level she said that was for parties of five, we had three. Halfway through our meal I noticed their was a couple sitting in one of the booths I requested and the other two were empty. I think you should cater to the customers who are already in your restaurant.
This is our favorite place for Indian food. The flavors are complex and interesting, and dishes made to order (good if one of your party is heat-averse!). The naan bread is about perfect, and the masala chai is as good as you'll find anywhere in town. We've tried most of the lunch menu especially, and while it's all good our favorites are saag and makhani. And the korma. We typically will order more than we can eat so we can take leftovers home for dinner.
My nephew (raised in Ankara, Turkey) loves the salty lassi; the mango lassi is great, but more calories than I need when I want to have a full meal.
This is a QUIET restaurant, which appeals greatly to us.
The staff are competent, attentive, and make good suggestions.
This is our go-to restaurant when out-of-town guests come to visit.
The Malai Kofta was some of the best we've had in the Portland area. The kofta were tender and fresh. The saag paneer was amazing. Our server was very attentive and friendly. We were happy to hear that the restaurant has happy hour until 7 pm. The bar manager was kind enough to describe the happy hour menu and drink options. We look forward to giving it a try!
It was unfortunate that the server became unnecessarily defensive quite easily when my adult daughter asked to clarify contradictory information between what menu stated and what server understood. This happened early in our visit. Also, asked for information about salt content and was told by same server that nothing could be done. I would have hoped she would inquire with the chef what dishes would be lower salt content, to try and accommodate the customer or at least show an effort. That didn't happen, more defensiveness was expressed. The food was good, and we would have gone back if the ambiance and the tone of the interactions had been better.
We have been regular customers of East India Co for the past 7-8 years and have been there over 30 times in this period of time. We love the food there in general and that is what has brought us back repeatedly. However, the past two visits (within the last 2 months) have been sub-par. First and foremost, the service is SLOW. Drinks took over 30min to get to the table. Totally unacceptable. Then the food service was slow as well. Overall, our meal took a total of over 2 hrs! While we appreciate a leisurely meal, 2 hrs is pushing it. We were told that the place was short-staffed. This is an excuse. If they were short staffed, they should have turned people away or rejected reservations (we had one). Coming to the food - the marinade on the paneer tikka has changed and we're not sure why. While the tikka was good, it is no longer authentic tasting. Please bring back your old recipe! The portion sizes have also gone down on this particular dish. The malai kofta (best in town in our opinion) and dal tadka were very good as usual. The paneer tikka masala was average (paneer was tough and not soft like it should be). Breads were good as usual. While we loved this place in the past, our latest two experiences here have been way below our expectations. We are unsure if there has been a management change here, but whatever it is, it will be harder for us to justify going back in the future!
My family and I (there are 7 of us, all ages) have been there twice and always leave happy . It's such a pretty restaurant, even my 7 yr old grandson noticed many things in their decor, like the ceiling...the food is gooooood, and portions are too, plus we got good service from a 'just friendly enough' wait staff. We'll go back again and again.
Everything was fantastic.
Birthday dinner for my partner. Beautiful restaurant. We were lucky that it was relatively empty when we went in, so the noise level was minimal. It would be easy for this place to get a bit noisy during rushes.
The food was delicious, perfectly spiced and seasoned, and really hit the spot. The samosas were incredible!
We shared food dishes between four people and had abundant and delicious leftovers the next day. Great service and very good food. Many options. Kingfisher beer on tap and good cocktails. Quiet setting where we could easily have a great conversation while enjoying really good Indian food.
We have lived in the Portland area for almost 4 years now, and have been looking for a good Indian restaurant ever since. We have finally found it here. Delicious food, great service and great location. We first tried it during Portland Dining Month. Our son was just visiting and we took him here. He absolutely loved it too. We definitely recommend this restaurant. We are hooked!
We were looking for an authentic Indian restaurant and came across this gem. Food was fantastic and service was great; everyone was friendly and attentive. Great atmosphere (it could be a little dark for pictures), and nice table settings. Overall, we were glad we found this place. We'll definitely be back, and hopefully there'll be more of us so we could sit in once of the fancy booths with curtains :)
