Delicious Samosas, Chicken Makanin and vegetables. They specialize in tandoori. Definitely will go back.
This was our second time eating at the East India Grill. The previous occasion was about 10 years ago and clearly we forgot how bad the experience and food was the first time.'
My husband and I eat out for our date night once a week, a 20 year tradition and we mostly impressed with the array of restaurants, service and food choices in Portland.
On dining occasion at East India Grill we were really disappointed because our appetizers were supposed to be chicken from the Tandoor oven but they were smoked and an odd texture. The mains we ordered were curries and Biryani. The lamb in the Vindaloo was old and tough (the Vindaloo curry itself was a good flavor) and the chicken in the Makani curry was a weird sliced breast and the curry itself tasted like tomato paste. The rice both plain and the Biryani rice had a slimy texture.
On the bright side, the Naan was really good and the wine we chose a Pinot from the Willamette Valley was excellent.
Unfortunately the atmosphere was cold and dated and the booth chairs were extremely uncomfortable.
We love Indian food, we know what its like to eat excellent, tasty Indian and unfortunately the East India Grill was very disappointing!!
Beautiful space, friendly staff and consistently good food.
Went there with friends to celebrate their anniversary. It was one of our friends first time to visit an Indian restaurant. With our server's expert help, we were able to get an appetizer, four different entrees and two different naan breads. We also tried a yoghurt drink, a glass of wine and a ginger beer. Everything was very tasty - a couple of us had a favorite and the other two couldn't choose between two or three of them they were all very good. We avoided the Vindaloo as most of the folks at the table don't care for hotter foods.
Samosa Chaat (App)
Tikka Masala (Chicken)
Kadai Paneer (Cheese based)
Malai Kofta (Potato Dumplings)
Bhuna Gosht (Lamb)
Naan / Rosemary Naan
Mango lassi (Yoghurt/Mango drink)
Came from out of town. Picked East India Co because it was close to our rental and I love East Indian food. This place was extraordinary. Best I've had. I knew we were in for a good meal as everyone there was East Indian. I had lamb Vindaloo that was spicy for me and I love heat. My wife had lamb Goan Jhinge Ka Salan. It was fabulous as well. The prices were great. Couldn't believe we went to such a nice restaurant in downtown Portland had drinks and didn't break the bank.
Outstanding food and service
Delicious food, very accommodating for out gluten free diner, good overall experience.
Our favorite Indian Restaurant in Portland, hands down! We were sad to see 1/2 the seats were gone in the restaurant. But exceptional food for sure! I highly recommend this restaurant, the food and service was excellent! Laurie
Food was great. Nice interior. Prices good. Friendly service. Drinks were original and tasty. Will go again.
Great food excellent service
The service here is incredibly slow. They have minimal seating due to COVID but even with 3 people they were not able to keep up which seemed very strange. It took them 30 minutes to even get a drink order from us. We arrived at 7 pm and didn’t get food till 8:40. They got our order wrong so two of our group did not eat. We left disappointed.
Samosa Chaat was excellent and is one of our favorites. My Shrimp Tikka Masala (medium) was very good with just right amount of spice. Rice also very good and garlic naan was outstanding. Naan bread only taste good straight from the oven and mine certainly was. Beer choices are also very good. East India Company is our favorite restaurant (of any food-type) in Portland area!!
We had a wonderful meal at East India Co. Everything was tasty, but we would come back for the Bhindi Pyaz alone. Deelish. The tables were widely spaced out, everything was clean, and it felt completely stress-free. We'll be back!
The restuarant was not ready for reopening. The service was good but very slow, as they were very understaffed. Reservation was at 7pm, didn't get ontrays until 8:30pm. They lost their liquor license so none of the great drinks on their menu were available. Very disappointing and should have been listed on the website. The food was amazing, best Indan food Iv had, hoping to try them again when they have more staff and alcohol.
Despite the given circumstances with COVID - EIC did a great job of giving very spaced seating and providing good service despite having limited staff.
Food was incredible! Would definitely come back!
We had a great time. If I could offer some constructive feedback, the drinks were a bit slow but it didn't ruin our dinner at all and I would definitely return.
Other than some power tool noise, the experience was great.
The best Indian restaurant in Portland, hands down. Exceptional in every way.
Decided to dine in. Food was delicious as usual! Staff is always friendly and attentive.
The food was good and the service was excellent! Definitely will go back.
Delicious lunch with five friends. Table ready when we arrived. Our server was excellent: attentive, helpful with ordering, unobtrusive. Absolutely delicious cuisine! We all plan to be back with our families and friends! We hear there is a wonderful happy hour as well! Thank you East India!
This was my first time dining at this restaurant, and I was truly impressed. The waitstaff was very friendly and attentive, and answered all of our questions. The food was amazing! The balance of different flavors in everything that we ate really set this restaurant apart from other Indian restaurants I've been to. The chef was delightful, and came and chatted with us at our table for a little bit. You can tell he is really passionate about his cooking - and it shows.
This is now my new favorite place for Indian cuisine. I will certainly be back.
Great server/bartender. Great food. Very comfortable setting
The food was delicious. The waitress and bartender were both amazing and knowledgeable, including their spot-on recommendations when I had trouble deciding what to order.
My favorite Indian restaurant in Portland! I've had dinner here several times and the food and service are always great. I wish I could remember the name of the person who served our table last Thursday night, because she was so professional, friendly and knowledgeable. She made our meal -- which was excellent, as usual -- an even more enjoyable experience. Highly recommend!
Excellent Indian food and a great bar. Just a bit noisy for a conversation.
Food and service was so great! It was a busy night and our server kept his cool and was professional and food did not take as long for being a busy night
This is a favorite place downtown. Food is excellent and well-presented.
AMAZING. Their service was INCREDIBLE. I’ve lived in Portland since 2006 and this is the best service I’ve ever had!
So glad we tried this place before a concert at the Schnitz. We have two dishes we love that we always try first at Indian restaurants: Tandoori chicken and Rogan Josh. The chicken was tender and flafirful, but could have used a few more onions and peppers. The Rogan Josh lamb shank was fabulous, super tender and the sauce was rich and delicious. Garlic naan rounded out the meal nicely. Also the waiter was very accommodating and made up a special cocktail, a boulevardier for my hubby which he said was excellent. My house red wine pour was super generous! We will be back for sure.
Always great food and service
the food was ok, there was one dish that stood out for the rest, which is the Makhani. However, the service, though the server was nice, it seems that they were understaffed in the front of house. The time between appetizers and entree were about 40 minute long. The food was good just not great for the prices that we paid. I hope they figure out their staffing issues.
Usually the food is spicier than what we were served last night, which was disappointing, but I love this restaurant. The food and drinks are always good. Service was impeccable.
It started out a little rocky—we were kept waiting at the hostess stand for 5 minutes too long, after arriving for our reservation. But then we were seated in a lovely booth. First time ever seated in this prized area of the restaurant. But then after we spoke to our waitress for the first time she sounded nasal and so I asked for a different server because I didn’t want to get sick. This was accommodated and the rest of the evening went smoothly. The food is always excellent here.
Christmas tradition at East India Co started four years ago and will continue. Food and service were great - especially the lamb chops and paneer tikka masala. A special shout out to the hostess, who was very attentive from the moment we checked in. She made sure that there would be zero problem with the peanut allergy, which included making sure the pan in which they roasted peanuts from the bar was cleaned well in advance of our reservation time.
Wonderful food, lovely ambience. Loved that it was open Christmas Day. It was packed!
I was disappointed. The menu descriptions were off from what we ordered. The environment was very nice. We ordered the samosas based on the recommendation from our waitress they were delish that’s where is fun ended. We were going to order a different appetizer. I believe it was like a croquet. Not sure if the name. She said it’s actually Tempura.
I ordered the salmon tandoori, it was delicious but it was 4 pieces of salmon and nothing else. Not what you’d expect for dinner no rice or sauce. The salmon was supposed to come with Bombay potatoes. When I asked the waitress, she said they’re a garnish and was brought a garnish of potatoes on a plate. Our table also ordered buttered chicken that had no flavor and the chicken biryani. The biryani tasted like yesterday’s rice with chicken left overs.
The manager did come over to apologize and offer us ice cream on the house. We declined. Too many desserts around the holidays. She mentioned they’re working on revamping the menu. We were also told by the manager the restaurant is family style. We had no idea. Overall it was a bad experience. I likely would not go back.
Beautiful dining room, attentive staff and good food! Overall a very good dining experience!
