Subtle complex marinades using time honored Indian grilling methods created by seasoned master chefs reflect the food trends in today's India. The menu remains true to classic Indian recipes but is served with verve and style. All of this along with our hospitality and innovative signature cocktails makes for a unique dining experience.
The restaurant is conveniently located in the heart of downtown Portland on 11th avenue between Yamhill and Taylor. We are open for lunch, happy hour, and dinner Monday through Sunday. We invite you to join us for the East India experience.
I’ve been a regular at East India Grill over the last few years but returning this time after a long gap. Paneer Kati roll was excellent- the veggies ordered were done well but I didn’t quite estimate the spice level accurately. Medium was less spicy than I expected. Would certainly return.
As usual, the food was delicious (lamb chops for me, salmon for my husband) and the service was great. The noise level was high as the restaurant was full but it didn't detract from our experience. Thank you for a lovely dining experience.
Food was excellent and the service was efficient. The place has a relaxing vibe. I would recommend the drink specials and garlic naans!
This is our go-to Indian restaurant in Portland. The quality is great, the waitstaff are attentive and friendly without being intrusive, and (a very rare quality indeed) the place is QUIET so you can have a conversation. They have the best masala chai in town, and the best naan. Our favorite entrees include anything in the makhani sauce (paneer is terrific), the kormas, and the tandoori chicken. If samosas are your thing be sure to get an order: they come cut in half, on a bed of deliciously-seasoned garbanzo beans. It is easy to order too much, but the leftovers warm up well the next day so try several different things.
WE had a great dinner and evening at East India Co. Our only complaint was that the Tandoori Chicken skewer was too salty. Everything else was wonderful.
Food was great like usual, but the light kept adjusting up and down. Annoying.
We came for Portland Dining Month, and had a lovely experience. The food was delicious and plentiful, and the service was attentive and kind. Would recommend and return.
Excellent food. Try the Indian Ice Cream for dessert!
Parking was a challenge, but worth the effort. Very quiet, relaxing ambience. Loved the food, great service to. We're likely to return next time we're in the area.
Checked out this spot during Portland Dining Month and it was a great deal - good portion sizes and tasty food. Definitely some of the better Indian food available in PDX. Only complaints were it was a bit loud and one of our two servers was rather abrupt/pushy in his interactions with us - when we’ve just sat down to join our friends and tell you several times we need a few minutes, please give us a few minutes before returning to ask again! Attentive service is great, but his approach felt pushy, rushed and unwelcoming.
Excellent! Best Dining Month deal in town.
This was our 2nd time at East India. The first time we liked it enough to return. Given that we live in Seattle and Portland has great dining options, this should speak to the quality of the first visit. Unfortunately, our 2nd time through left us uninspired. The samosas were excellent but our entrees were so-so. In fact, one of the 2 entrees they delivered was not what we ordered but we failed to realize it until after we had begun eating and decided to just go with it. How did we not know? The dish they did deliver is one we often order at Indian restaurants so it didn't set off the warning it should have. Anyway, there are better Indian restaurants in the Portland area and I doubt we'll be back here again.
had just returned from India and I missed the food. This was very good and recaptured the feeling i had there.
We had a fabulous dinner. Food was excellent and the wait staff was friendly and attentive. We plan on coming back for dinner, and for the out-of-this world appetizers. Best Indian food I have had in a very long time.
Food and service were great! Easy nearby parking.
We went for the Portland dining month menu. However we were disappointed in that the menu offered online for this promotion was not the same as what was available in the store. Still, the service was great, the food we ordered was very good & authetic. Will repeat.
First time at East India and it was a find! It's very comfortable in cozy booth seating. The service was excellent and the food was delicious! We ordered a variety of the curries and the biryani and all were excellent. The garlic naan was so good we ordered a second serving.
Unique chat preparation, very delicious, and the paneer Tikka. Awesome for vegetarians.
Overall, very nice place, good service and very good food. I recommend it!
Attractive restaurant with a menu that is smaller than most Indian restaurants. They clearly concentrate on making high quality dishes. It's one of the few Indian restaurants in Portland that will take a reservation.
Great dinner. Really enjoyed all the food. We had four people, eat family style, everything was fantastic.
Nice bar as well with unique cocktails.
The food here is excellent. However, during our last two visits there were large, noisy groups also dining. With the open (non-absorbent) ceilings it is difficult to have a private conversation when there is shouting and loud guffaws in the room.
Great food. Definitely recommend lamb vindalu. Nice atmosphere.
The food was so delicious and and the staff is wonderful. We’ve eaten their with and without children, enjoying it both times
Delicious food and fun experience.
Chicken Tandoori not very interesting but the Rogan Josh was excellent.
Delightful
I enjoyed the dinner. It was nice to have a dinner conversation and to be able to do a family style meal. Service was attentive and the food came out timely. However, I was not overwhelmed with the food and felt it was a bit over priced. I will definitely try dinner or lunch again based on my experience.
The food was amazing and the server did a fantastic job of explaining everything on the menu since this was our first time there. The chicken wings are their best kept secret.
One of the best Indian restaurants I've found in Portland. The flavors were terrific, and the chef adds his own touch to several dishes that distinguish East India from other restaurants in a very positive way.
Excellent, very best Indian in NW
Please take "noise level" off your list. Some people prefer a quiet restaurant, and others prefer a noisy restaurant, so the ranking on this can not be on the same scale.
We have come here several times and always find the good, the service and the value the best for Indian food in the Portland area.
Great service, great curry!
Very good food, bold flavors. Staff was very nice. good place.
Overall, a lackluster, disappointing experience.
Service: not friendly. We were asked for our order, then hushed because the server hadn't retrieved a writing surface from pocket. Never checked to see how our food was after it was delivered.
Drinks: coconut-lime concoction was watery and had an off-putting flavor. Mango lassi was fine, but from a box.
Food: samosa appetizer was reasonably good but a bit cold when delivered. A korma that was ordered with mild heat was overly hot, as it was almost as spicy as the vindaloo (which was quite hot, though our server warned of this). The entrees themselves were of good quality and preparation, but some may find the level of spice in the vindaloo to be quite excessive, and the korma clearly should have been more mild (it can be ordered in mild, medium or hot spice levels).
Price: high, but not out of par for the area.
Server had a real bad attitude
Attentive service. Beautiful, private booth, which provided an intimate atmosphere. Quiet enough for conversation. Servings were generous, the food was delicious with careful attention to preferred level of spiciness, and the special cocktails were a perfect complement to the meal.
The kitchen got way behind early on New Year’s Eve with no communication to guests. Every table was absent of food. We were about to leave when things started to pick up and then our food arrived. Our server should’ve communicated immediately but she seemed new. The manager should’ve instructed servers to inform their tables. The food was delicious and the whole mood changed as tables got their meals. We would go back despite uneven service.
The place was pretty nice, but our waitor refused to take our appetizer order before our entree and, while doing that, rushed our entree order, so we both ordered quickly and indecisively. That in itself was very annoying. The food was good, but I wouldn't go back.
