Very nice place and I loved the food! It was fresh and spiced very well especially the crab and corn hush puppies. The only thing I would recommend is to get a larger table outside or further away from the tables near the window that are spaced quite close. I found myself with a faint headache after being located too close to the gentleman at the next table who's voice carried. It made for a distracting meal and was hard to interact with my meal partner.
Food was good. Need a larger mixed drink variety. Waitress was somewhat aggressive.
Food was great!!! Friendly staff!!!
Rude hostess, poor and slow service. Food is good, but you can have the same delicious BBQ at other restaurants for less money and better service. Sadly, not worth it. Could be a much better restaurant if their staff was better.
Relaxed capable service and delicious food. Picky about my BBQ but this was great. We shared the Pitmaster Platter which include good collards and Mac and cheese- particularly liked the mustard based sauce on the side with my pulled pork
The service was horrible. The waiter was incredibly rude once he finally did come over. Bottomless mimosas were only available if you purchase an entree. There were no gluten free options to choose from on the entree menu. The food was mediocre at best. The waiter was slow to refill my friend’s bottomless mimosa and other wait staff were much more attentive. Don’t waste your time with this one. So many other options for good dining in DC.
Amazing service, food, & atmosphere. Their biscuits are the best!
Location and experience was great at this eatery by the Navy Yard. Drink options were limited and food was just average. I wasn’t impressed with fried chicken and biscuit entree.
Overall, this place didn’t live up to the hype. Everything was average; not bad-but not must come back soon dining. Maybe it was what we ordered? My group was there for brunch service. I do like the vibe, decor of Due South and our service was very good. The food was the big disappointment here...Lackluster at best. But I would visit again for drinks/appetizers etc. when I’m in the area.
We were pleased to be seated and greeted right away and the location off the river provided for a lovely night out. However, while the service and ambiance were definite bright spots, the food was just not good. We started with chicken wings and Brussel sprouts. The wings had a soft soggy skin and the chicken was flavorless. The Brussel sprouts were better but not as good as one would hope given the honey glaze, feta and pecans. That said, it was the best bite I had all night. We moved on to the entrees. My husband had the brisket with potato salad, greens and cornbread. All of it was a disappointment. The potato salad was cold and solid, the greens just average and the brisket dry with lots of fat. The cornbread was incredibly dry and flavorless. I got the fried chicken and cheddar grits. It looked delicious upon it being presented but it certainly didn’t live up to the sight. The chicken skin was flaky and crispy (a plus!) but none of it nor the chicken tasted seasoned. It was all so bland. The grits were equally flavorless. The cheddar was mild and just wasn’t enough to make the grits taste yummy. One unmentioned plus was the old fashion. Nice and stiff and not watery at all.
We were here for a birthday celebration and I have to tell you apart from the food being fantastic the main reason this visit was so good had EVERYTHING to do with the outstanding service from our waitress whose name is Maggie. She should be running the place. Full of smiles from the very beginning all the way through to the end. She was patient with the group and shared in the festive vibe of this birthday celebration. Right down to the end where she did something I have never seen when handling a large group... She offered to split up all the tabs so everyone contributed to the shared apps but still paid for their own drinks and mains. I have been going to restaurants all over the country for over 40 years and I have never seen that done so flawlessly and without the usual annoyance that comes with a request like that. Maggie took this event over the top with her wonderful work ethic and great personality for which we were all so very grateful! THANK YOU MAGGIE!!!! We hope to see you again soon!
I had a reservation at Due South for 7 people. I was running late and called the restaurant in advance. They told me that it was not a problem and that they would see me when I got there. We were seated in a closed off area which was good for a group. The restaurant was sort of cold, which was the only negative I noticed regarding the ambiance. For brunch, I ordered the chicken and waffles. The chicken lacked seasoning, but the waffle was good. It overall was a good experience, and I would come back.
Met family for lunch. Didn’t know what to expect, but pleasantly surprised. The service, even during the busy lunch period, was so quick! We ordered and 10 minute later, had our food! Wonderful find in the Navy Yard :)
It was my third time dining at the establishment. I was completely satisfied all three times. The service was great. The food was fantastic. I really like the scenery and ambiance of the restaurant.
Great food and awesome service
Bug in one of the beers; host made us move to another table after drinks were delivered to accommodate another large group; shades were broken and bright sun was in our eyes at new table with no resolution. they just didn't care.
Went to Due South prior to a DC United game. We had trouble locating the restaurant (they have a bar in a separate location that we went to first) and so arrived about 6:15 for a 7:30 game. We were seated right away but waited almost 15 minutes with no service (no water, no drinks) and couldn't even find a server until I finally flagged down the hostess. We gave a very rushed order to the server but as everyone around us was leaving for the game we still hadn't been served. Finally got the food at 7:00 pm and had to wolf it down in 15 minutes in order to reach the park for kickoff. Too bad, as the food was really quite good and we would have enjoyed the chance to savor the meal with our beer. Best potato salad I ever had and loved the salt and pepper ribs. We will be back prior to future events, but will plan a full two hours for the meal.
Don’t like the new menu, but the Crab hushpuppies were awesome!
Enjoyed it, did not factor in it would be a brunch menu. Not my favorite meal.
I was very pleased with the service. I don't remember the names of the two workers but they were very pleasant. The Male was witty and made us laugh. The female was detailed and attentive. The food was good and the drinks were just right. I will definitely be back.
I don't think the noise level was Energetic, it was awful outside. The speaker are blaring music and it isn't dinner music. We asked twice for it to be turned down, but since the hostess doesn't work off of tips and is 20 years old, she doesn't care. The wait person was nice, but after the initial order other staff just plops down the food and there isn't much follow up. The outside seating area was not inviting at all.
My scallops and risotto was soggy, and the ceviche appetizer was small and bland. My husband said the burger was good.
Interesting take on southern food. Their take on eggs Benedict which substituted pulled pork for the traditional ham was the best dish our party of 3 had. The grits cake and lox missed the mark as the salmon was sliced too thick and the grits cake was disappointingly bland. The smoked turkey hash didn’t look too good, but apparently tasted great as my husband finished every bit. We all felt the biscuits were nondescript. Portions were very substantial and drink offerings were creative. It’s a short stroll along the Anacostia River to the Nationals Ballpark which was where we headed after brunch and we’d probably do brunch there again before a game.
Disinterested, inattentive service. Waiter didn’t seem to give a crap. Long wait to order. 15 minutes to get our beverages and then had to wait longer to get sugar for coffee. No refills for coffee. No check backs to see if everything was ok until we were almost finished. Food was decent but not special. I had the smoked salmon grit cake which was a “main” but it came with no sides- would it have killed them to throw some home fries on there? Couple next to us complained about the shrimp swimming in oil - and they were. Gross. Very loud in the restaurant, making conversation difficult. Doubt we’ll return.
The food and service at Due South are always great. We love walking along the water and enjoying a nice meal at DS.
Buttermilk Fried Chicken (Grilled Chicken) was overcooked and not enough sweet potato fried.
Great amazing experience I can’t wait to come back
Came with coworkers and we loved it. Order the crab and corn hush puppies and you will not regret it!!!
The food was wonderful. Really good comfort food with a twist!
Great for brunch!
I was excited to try this place since southern is not the typical place my boyfriend and I would go to.
To start, this place was not crowded when we arrived yet we needed a reservation and could only get an 8pm time.
We sat down to order drinks and it took forever to get some waters. I finally got my jalapeño vodka lemonade drink which was OK. IT would have been a little better if it was sweeter. Then we started off with the Brussel sprouts And then We ordered the huge meat platter and a Cobb salad.
The Brussels were delicious I thought. The dinner was not my favorite the meats were typical, nothing to rant and rave about. The food reminded me just of typical kitchen cooking. It didn’t have any outstanding flavor that I wouldn’t get from being at home. The macaroni and cheese was a bit dry and not as flavorful as I had hoped
The cob salad Was good. Filled with toppings made it so much better. We split everything we ordered and each got a drink. The bill came to 123$ which I felt was way too expensive for food I could make at home. I wouldn’t go back and plan to try other dc restaurants. It’s a shame :(
Due South is excellent. I had the crawfish dip and shrimp n grits, my friend had the brisket. Both meals were delicious. The brisket was very tender. Great atmosphere, by the water. Definitely will go back.
Not many healthy choices on the menu
We had started off with one server who seemed like she wasn’t interested (guess it was her time to get off ) and she ended up asking us what we wanted to drink and appetizers then there was a long wait time because she left i think but then we got another server (she was awesome ) food was great soooo delicious . Drinks were kind of too strong for our tastes but that’s good for others. We picked there specifically for my birthday hoping it would be super special and on the water we were placed behind a beam at the smallest table in there.. while there was hardly any one else in there and endless options. We found amazing ratings for this place we live in Maryland about an hour away. We picked it for the brunch menu which said they served until 3 we made a reservation for before 3 and were given the dinner menu. Which was great for my boyfriend not so much me. Not saying it was horrible experience and I’ll never go back for the food. But it just definitely isn’t somewhere I’d spend a special occasion ever again :/ kinda disappointed in the atmosphere/service of a few employees but the food was something to come back for.
Friends in town
Our server-waiter was just fine. She was polite, welcoming.
The problem came in the delivery of entrees. There were three of us. However, when the food was brought to our table...there were only two entrees. It took nearly another 15 minutes to get the third entree. Not good.
I normally have a pleasant experience at Due South and not this one was any different but I didn’t like the brisket quesadillas so the rating is based mostly on that menu item.
Very small portions for the price. I got a frose drink, which was $13 for a small wine glass size, and a Cobb salad, which came in a small bowl. I know it was the lunch portion but was surprised by how small it was. Especially since it was $20. Food tasted fine and service was good, but overall disappointed.
Very clean. Nice area. Server seemed a little rushed. Food was very good and that is coming from someone from Mississippi! One of the best whiskey/bourbon selections i found in all of Washington DC. I had the fried chicken. Was a little over cooked or it was in old grease. Cheese grits were very good. Most everybody else got the pulled pork and said it was very good and very close to BBQ in Mississippi. Loved the decor of this restaurant! Very modern with a touch of rustic southern flair. We enjoyed this place very much.
