Due Lire Ratings and Reviews
We have enjoyed eating here before concerts at the Old Town School right down the street. My recent visit was a bit of a disappointment. The cavetelli--a staple in Chicago Italian restaurants--was a meager portion that looked like a bowl of reddish oatmeal. Hardly a nice presentation and mediocre in volume and quality. I am not a proponent of devouring or needing large portions, but I also recognize what's deserved for the money spent in nice Italian establishments. The others in my party seemed to enjoy their salmon and risotto , but I would steer clear of the pastas--or at least try and catch a glimpse of them as they pass by before ordering. Restaurant is nice, cozy and festive otherwise.
My husband and I had been wanting to try this restaurant for some time. It was easy to get a reservation through OpenTable. The restaurant is small but the host and the staff are very welcoming. It has a very nice cozy ambience. I tried one of the specialty Italian cocktails which was delicious and then we ordered a bottle of wine and were pleased to find out that Wednesday evening's special is half price bottles of wine! We shared a lovely Fresco bruschetta, and my husband had a seafood risotto for his entree which was delicious. I had the miale, or pork loin. The flavors were absolutely delicious and the presentation was beautiful, however I felt the pork was a little over done for my liking. It was still moist though. We split some sort of pistachio yumminess for dessert. Our waiter was fabulous, and our table was never lacking for water, utensils or a clear area, meaning that plates were removed quickly after we were finished eating - the staff is really on it. We felt the portions were generous and the food was reasonably priced. We will definitely go back again.
Great neighborhood restaurant. The Quality and Value are both outstanding. Italian restaurant that does not serve bread!!!!! What??????? Feels it interferes with the flavors and disturbs the pallet. Love it!!! Great care in presentation. Small, intimate............more like what you would find in Europe or side streets in Manhattan. A winner!!! This is a place that watches every plate that comes out of the kitchen.
The restaurant was packed and the noise level was too much. We couldn’t hear each other well at the table. It was so nice and quiet when we were here a few months ago and ate on the outdoor patio.
Some of the food was spotty this time as well (one dish was too salty). They were very gracious about it.
I’ll give them another try on a week night or when the weather is nice enough to eat outside again.
This place defines the term "neighborhood gem" Everything is hand made and authentic. The place is very small (maybe 15 tables) and everyone gets individual attention. The staff is friendly knowledgeable and patient. Because everything is hand made, it sometimes takes a little longer than normal to get your food, but it is well worth the wait. If you want quick, frozen and out of a box, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!! If you want food like grandma used to make, with care, love and fresh ingredients, then this is the place for you. Best new food experience I have had in a long time.
Very charming and cozy (if the weather holds, I recommend the back patio). Incredibly gracious service by Katia, and wonderful wine (Barbera) with the salumi formaggi platter of meats cheeses and jams over toasted bread - just enough for the four of us to share. Our friends enjoyed the lamb chops and the short rib ravioli with porcini mushrooms, and we loved the maiale (wonderfully tender pork with radicchio gorgonzola risotto) and the tortelloni with brown butter sage sauce and almonds. Finished with a beautiful flan. Could not have been better!
All around great dining experience. Went for dinner on a Friday night and had no trouble getting a reservation and table. The wait staff was very nice and attentive. We spent about 3 hours there and never felt like they wanted us to leave quickly to turn over the table. The bread with mozzarella and pesto was amazing, as was the bolognaise (sp?) sauce pasta. Portion size was perfect as well.
Great atmosphere and an excellent date spot. Sound level is perfect for conversation without hearing everyone else's conversation.
They may have had some specials, but the waitress read them to us without any sort of specials menu, so we forgot them as soon as she read them. But that would be the only not completely positive part. Overall just an excellent meal and a nice time. I wish I had known about the restaurant before, because I would definitely return and recommend it to friends.
Repeatedly go to Due Lire and will go back. Entrees were fantastic-mushroom torteloni and the polenta fries are awesome. Misto appetizer was ok, disappointed with service this visit. Server didn't speak much and we had to ask for specials.
Small neighborhood restaurant, very cozy and not too noisy. Good selection of cocktails, beers and wine. Menu was varied and interesting. We had a salad and the focaccia as an appetizer, gnocchi. Salmon and lamb chop entrees and the Nutella dessert. The entire meal was excellent, well presented with decent size portions. The dessert was the highlight and was superb. Overall great meal!!
This place was delicious. My husband and I split the spinach salad, the bolognese pasta, and the lamb. The pasta and the lamb were exceptional (pasta was definitely my favorite; perfectly al dente with delicious bolognese), and the salad was fine. Our server recommended a wine not on the list, which was fantastic and complemented our meal perfectly. We will likely be back!
Relaxed trattoria atmosphere, charming host/owner, Massimo will answer any questions on his well rounded wine list. Food is as authentic as can be. Best tagliatelle bolegnese outside of Bologna! Got another order to go so we could have it the next day. Wonderful find and a good value. Great for A date or easy weekday evening out.
We loved everything we had. There was a Burrata appetizer special with speck and roasted peppers that was perfect, and our risotto and short-rib ravioli primi plates were delicious. I appreciated that the portions weren't huge - it gave us room for dessert, and the desserts were phenomenal, especially the Babá Napoletano, which was a wonderfully moist, light, warm cake with mascarpone gelato and cherries.
Everything reminded me of the attention to detail and freshness and simple ingredients you'd find in Italy. The cocktails were also really well done and the wine list was extensive. The service was attentive and friendly. All in all, a wonderful experience - we can't wait to go back.
We arrived for our reservation, and asked if we could be seated outside. They told us it would be a 20 minute wait, but we could either eat in the dinning room or wait on the benches outside by the bar. Luckily, they were able to arrange a table for three outside within five minutes.
I ordered the spaghetti. It came with tiny shrimp and peas. The noodles were good, but the quality of the shrimp and vegetables were poor (seemed like they heated up previously frozen ones). If I return, I will try something different.
Our server was informative and helpful, but I gave a "good" rating because we had to flag down the server a couple of times.
The outdoor patio was very cute. If the weather is nice, I would highly recommend eating outside rather than inside.
We tried this looking for a place near the Old Town School of Folk Music where we were seeing a concert, and we were very pleasantly surprised by the food and ambiance. We sat in the back patio, which was lovely. I don't usually like alfresco dining, because it can be loud and distracting by the street. However, this was quiet and gorgeous in the back and felt European. We had the char and thought it was delicious. The staff was very nice.
This place seems like it has lost a step, service was not great, not attentive at all. We needed to flag our server down several time. The manager was also not helpful or engaged.
Food was solid, but overall seemed like the staff was not focused on serving the few tables in the restaurant
We found this restaurant on open table by chance but will be sure to go back. Small but very friendly place. Everything was fresh and tasty. We sat indoors as the patio was full but enjoyed the ambiance of it. The fried calamari appetizer was delicious and included an interesting variety of ingredients. I had the half chicken with polenta and loved it.
Due Lire is one of my favorite restaurants. Food is great, service is wonderful (Katia is awesome!), friendly and consistent.
My only concern is sometimes the noise level makes conversation a challenge. Weather permitting, the patio solves that problem.
Love Due Lire!
