Drunken Poet is always reliable as far as caring about finicky diners. The wait staff is very attentive and ambiance perfect. My only compliant this time is my date's steamed shrimp and snow peas seemed to be small portion-wise for the price, but luckily it wasn't my hard earned money paying for it. My spicy basil salmon was perfect and had a lot of vegetables, scrumptious!
Food was good but not great. Menu seems to have changed.
Went on a first date here Saturday evening at 6 and would definitely go back! Wonderful service by a sweet woman who really cared that we were satisfied with our meal. I always feel stupid asking questions as I'm a picky eater, but our waitress put me at ease. I don't eat rice and she graciously offered to substitute steamed vegetables. I had Salmon in Thai Basil sauce which was plentiful and my friend had the Veggie Stir Fry with Tofu and loved the texture of the fried tofu.
My only minor complaint was that the host/manager? seemed a bit brusque and our waitress seemed to have many many tables to satisfy.
But overall, bravo and wonderful atmosphere for a date, dark with red lanterns, romantic!
Love their Sushi!!
Drunken Poet was a surprise to us, we'd been past it many times and never gone in. It's a Thai and sushi restaurant, and everything we ate was excellent. We were especially grateful to our waitress, who knew the menu inside and out, and guided us to the dishes that would suit our idiosyncrasies (no garlic, no chili, no shiitake, no cilantro). We had a couple of appetizers, something in lettuce leaves, and a curry pastry that were wonderful, and shared a yellow curry with peanuts and rice, which was just excellent. I'd go back in a minute.
Prices were good, too. Dinner for two was $40, including tax & tip.
We enjoyed Drunkin’ Poet. The Thai food was delicious.
Thoughtful place in many ways. Genuine, unique, welcoming and peaceful. Perfect place for all types of gatherings. The Alaskan roll was my favorite, no spice, a little crunch and great texture.
It was okay. Good, not great. Curiousity satisfied. Dinner was served piping hot, always a plus for me.
Love The Drunken Poet!
Family owned and managed and it shows in consistent food quality and care
My husband and I have been coming to Drunken Poet since it first opened. It started out as an unassuming Thai restaurant that later added sushi, but has morphed into a a more sophisticated Thai/Sushi restaurant with its remodeling several years ago. The food is outstanding and everything we ordered for our dinners was delicious. One of our favorite sushi rolls is "The Sexy Man", but we frankly like quite a few of them. The rolls might seem a little more pricey than at some restaurants, but they are large, often 10-12 pieces or more per roll. And when they have their special lobster roll, which is expensive, but it is, in effect like getting 3 separate sushi rolls and it's fabulous. For our dessert, we ordered their sliced mango with black sticky rice and coconut milk. If you've never tried that before, I highly recommend it. As our friends told us, they were a little skeptical when we told them to order it, but once they tried it, they absolutely loved it. For one thing, it's not overly sweet. Each couple shared a dessert order. Drunken Poet in Downtown Sarasota on Main St. is definitely a must visit.
This was our 2nd time in the same week as the food and service were both excellent our very first time here. What changed dramatically this 2nd visit was the service. Apparently they did not expect 2 huge birthday parties and were short service and kitchen staff. We paid the price for this big time. We had been sitting for an hour before getting drinks and our first app. Dinner DJ ally came an hour and a half after we sat down. The whole time our waitress did not apologize nor give us much information except they were very busy and the big tables were in front of us. We only found out about the staff shortage after the older gentleman refilling water explained things to us and said “all they could do was apologize”. The fact that they couldn’t have done this an hour earlier nor give us free dessert or maybe 10% off the bill means we won’t be going back soon. Cheap is one thing, cheap and inconsiderate is another.
I enjoyed the evening, restaurant and loved the food.. Note I did get a table with not enough lighting but I was also a little late.... Looking forward to dinning there again......
Great service. The food was delicious with some unusual choices on the menu
Great Thai food, loved the overall feel of the place!
It had been awhile since I last dined there and was as good as I remembered. The selection was extensive and the food very good. Wait staff was attentive and very pleasant.
My favorite place for sushi! The food is always amazing and everyone is always very polite and friendly.
Best sushi and fabulous service! They went above and beyond to make my birthday special. Thank you so much!
Slow service overprice appetizer are small ! Curry very small not good at all bitter vegetables and raw
It's a bit unfaitrto judge a restaurant on a single meal, especially so when my wife's dish --vegetable tempura--was handsomely presented and consumed with relish. Not so my beef massaman, a curry dish and Thai staple I've enjoyed many time elsewhere. The dish arrived as a smallish bowl filled with the appropriate ingredients (rice on the side) but the brown beef swam in a too thin broth. If there was coconut milk present, it was barely so. And the thinness of the broth made the peanuts and potatoes seem like ingredients hastily added. rather than important contributors to the dish. The waitress was charming, and having part of the menu on a mini pad with illustrations of various dishes was both novel and helpful. Certainly worth another try by me, and probably by you as well.
Always an enjoyable dining experience! Food is fresh, delicious and presented beautifully. One of our favorite restaurants!
excellent sushi but quite expensive
Food is always wonderful and I love the ambiance!!!
Way too expensive for what you get!
The food was meager and not great.
As someone who has been coming here for years, I was genuinely appalled by what happened last night at dinner. I brought a friend who had never been and ordered the same order I have had several hundred times. The sexy man roll didn't taste the way I've had it hundreds of times before and I asked my waitress if perhaps they didn't make it with tuna because it tasted terribly (it was a pale pale pink). She told me it was tuna and set it back down. Luckily, someone else came and took it away and replaced it and there was a noticeable difference (in taste and color) . I would've been perfectly fine with that but then our waitress had the audacity to bring out two pieces of sashimi as if to educate me better. Congratulations Drunken Poet, you've lost a longtime customer and someone who has frequently brought people to try out your food. To say I'm disappointed with this incident would be an UNDERSTATEMENT. Shame on you for treating me this way. If I could attach pictures, I would show you the distinct differences.
The food is authentic and excellent, and the staff is particularly warm, welcoming and friendly.
Below average service. Very slow kitchen. Served Black Tea and had to request Green Tea after being told we were served Green Tea. Do Servers not know the difference? Mushy vegetables in every dish all appeared to be precooked or reused from another day. My father requested to speak with the chef who failed to acknowledge his feedback and did not even make eye contact - wow! We only booked because my son wanted Thai for his graduation dinner. Our venue was changed to Sarasota and regrettably we picked here. Never again. Plenty of other food options in Sarasota.
This is my favorite downtown place to dine. Eat there at least once a week.
Spring Rolls were very disappointing! Pad Tai was quite tasty! Make sure on a scale of 1-5 for heat, you stay at 1, unless you like hot!
Food was bad. Soups were sweet like a syrup. When we asked the waiter he said they add sugar to their soups. Chicken satay was hard and dry. When the waiter told us that all their curries also have sugar we decided not to order the main course. I am a big fan of THAI food and have visited Thailand many times. Never heard of a Thai curry with sugar in it. This used to be a good place. The waiter told us they have a new chef.
Terrible Thai Spareribs. Not worth the money and inedible. Basically boiled, gray ribs and only about 4 of them.
We arrived for our reservation on time and seated. 20 minutes went by and we finally got water. 10 minutes late a guy came out and asked if we had ordered and we said no and had not made a drink order. He was to get someone. 10 minutes later we walked out. The place was not busy enough to be that inefficient. Place was chaos mode or in the weeds per restaurant talk. We are done, will not be back and make sure everyone knows. Open table should take them off the program as there is NO EXCUSE.
The owner really has put her heart into the restaurant and it shows. The food is very good and is very good value for money. The atmosphere is good and there is a feel good energy. One of the best restaurants on Main Street and in Sarasota.
Incredible food and service.
Great place! Using open table was great. But, they don't check it after 5:00. So call to confirm. Food is fantastic and our server was great and very funny. A must dine in Sarasota.
The service is usually SO good but I had to listen to staff complain about lack of tips...
Extremely slow service; food not worth the wait. Took us 40 minutes for the salads and soups to arrive and another 45 minutes to be served the entrees. Small portions for money charged. Preparation attractive but not great.
Nice night out with my fiance. We definitely recommend the Pad Thai.
The food is excellent but the service is very slow . Waiters confused , the Thia food was not warm enough, we had to ask for warming it up
Seafood main dish served in 1/2 cocoanut was terrific! Would return to try other dishes on the menu.
