About Dragonwell Bistro
Growing up among the clatter of silverware and plates in his parents’ restaurants, owner Jack Chu went off to China to work as a Business Consultant after he earned his MBA. There, he tasted authentic Chinese food in various regions. When he moved back to Portland with his wife, they opened Dragonwell Bistro. In the restaurant, large, arched windows stretch from the floor to the exposed rafters, allowing natural light to bring to life the color of dishes arranged artfully on plates. Chef Chen draws upon decades of experience as he forges sweet and savory sauces, such as a combination of champagne and orange juice destined to glaze lightly battered chicken; or sautéed shrimps with fresh Dragonwell loose leaf green tea from Hangzhou, China. Traditional steamed dumplings, Xiao Long Bao are freshly made from stratch each morning. Daily happy hour offers local wine, sake, ginger-infused vodka, and green-tea liqueur add exotic twists to cocktails.

Dragonwell Bistro Ratings and Reviews
We stopped in at 8 pm on New Years Eve for our traditional Chinese dinner. The place was busy but not jammed. They are not normally open on Sunday night, but they were open that Sunday for the holiday. The atmosphere was very pleasant. We like casual places, and we felt very comfortable there in street clothes, but we also saw people dressed for New Years parties later that night. The food was very good, and we really enjoyed our dinner. The service was good, not great. I think that they were light-handed on a Sunday night since they usually are not open. My only complaint is that they were closing at 9 pm as is their customary 'weekday' closing, and the staff was already in major shut down mode at 8:45 pm. I fully appreciate that this was not a normal night to be open, and they likely had other places to be for New Year's parties, etc. I would have expected tables to be bused, etc., but there were many tables that had been put together for larger parties, and the staff was lifting and pulling them into place all around us while we, and several other customers were still dining. It would have been great if the 'heavy lifting could have waited until 9:00 pm or even 9:15 pm. Despite that, we had a good time and would recommend this restaurant to others.
In top 3 of worst service ever. Too bad cause food was good. Waiter didn't tell us meatball dish was actually soup and let us order soup in addition too. Took 40 minutes to get order in 1/2 empty restaurant on a Tuesday Waiter didn't ask us if we wanted rice when he took order, we requested rice when dishes brought to table, it never came never saw waiter again until 30 later, w/out rice and asked if he could get us anything else! And we were charged for rice plus 2nd soup which also never came! We were party of 2. Can get better service for less
There was a bit of a snafu - My original reservation was at 4:00, then I changed it to 4:15 and the restaurant didn't get the revised time for my arrival. Since it was Christmas, they were very busy and the hostess was rattled. She seated us, but asked us to leave by 6:00 because they needed our table. At 6:00 we were still waiting for our desserts, so we were upset when the hostess asked us to leave. Our server and manager were very nice about it and made sure we knew we were important, and the evening was abnormally chaotic because of the holiday. Overall, the experience and the food were good - we had the shrimp, vegetable lo mein, broccoli beef and combination fried rice. We tried four of the desserts, including the sesame balls upon our server's recommendation. The sesame balls were hot and amazing and the vegan chocolate ice cream was delicious. I'd definitely go back, but stick with my original reservation time.
Order the soup dumplings every visit - only wish they had a few more varieties. Tried the orange chicken this visit also, liked the mandarin orange flavor a lot. Kung Pao chicken a bit to simple on ingredients for my taste but overall really enjoyable dining there.
While I made the reservation for 1 p.m., my plans changed and I walked in at noon. There was no problem getting seated and I was given a window view, My apologies, I do not recall my server’s name however she was enthusiastic and helpful. All dishes are cooked to order; this means a bit more time with the flexibility of leaving items out. The twice fried pork dish, minus bell peppers, was a perfect lunch all by it self. Choice of white or brown rice a good touch. There was some confusion at the end over paying and receiving change however it was cleared up with thoughtful apologies by the staff involved. All in all, a good first experience and I wouldn’t mind going back to sample other dishes.
This was a great find. We had a large group, all visitors to the area, and the restaurant was wonderful. Food was excellent, service exceptional, and we all had a great time. I will definitely come back next time I'm in Portland. Highly recommend you check this out if you are in Portland. Their menu is extensive and everyone, vegetarians and gluten free folks, found something to enjoy.
A good lunch spot m-f. Went one night last weekend for dinner and was disappointed. The lunch food is much better! There is a special pork wrap that they promote and that was very good. Everything else was very blah. The salt/pepper shrimp were bland, battered, fried and small. They forgot to take our drink order till the entrees came so by then we skipped beers. Also, they totally forgot our soup. The server was very nice. She said the kitchen staff are new. It felt like the typical rushed and slightly disorganized Asian restaurant. Used to be much better. Bummer
We stumbled across this gem as we were staying nearby, it was extremely quiet with it being Easter Sunday however that did not matter as our servers & food were both excellent. If we were local we'd go regularly but it's on the list for when we go back to Portland & will definitely recommend to others.
A friend and I have a regular, end-of-month lunch date to check-in with each other. We usually try to mix up our meeting locations; however, Dragonwell is our number one choice. The location is convenient (we walk from our downtown offices), the service is quick and friendly, and the food is always comes out of the kitchen fresh and delicious. I adore their Chicken and Green Bean entree, and since we usually share a meal, that is what we typically order. We are never disappointed with the quality and quantity of the plate, enough to feed two generously. My friend supplements with hot oil, but I enjoy the flavor of the sauce already on it. The last time we tried their Kung Pao Chicken, also delicious, I felt it could have had a little more "heat" to the spice. (I assume heat levels can be adjusted to taste.) The hot and sour soup is also a favorite, and the serving size is generous as well. A great place to have a quiet conversation with a friend over a shared meal. I would recommend reservations for lunch, as the time before last we were relegated to sit at the bar. I usually see one or two large business-lunch gatherings. The benefit there is if everyone is amenable, you get to share multiple entrees. Yum!
We enjoyed it very much. It was a bit expensive but good tasting food. They also charged extra for a small dish of rice, which was odd, since it was rather spendy. Our biggest complaint was all our food was served Luke warm. Wish it would have been hotter. The server was good and it was easy to park near the restaurant.
We were there when it opened so we were the only ones in the restaurant. It was my husband's birthday and I did a yelp search for Chinese food. Dragonwell got 4 starts so thought we would try it. We weren't disappointed. The food was very tasty and portions were large.
However, our hot tea was luke warm and they charge for rice which was surprising since most folks wouldn't eat Chinese dishes without rice.
Place was empty and cold. The appetizer of pork dumpling was good served with black rice vinegar and ginger. The orange chicken was ok and the green beans were a little better. This was my second visit because the first time it was good: must have had a change in food preparation. Our waitress, Lauren, was very nice.
We chose Dragonwell Bistro for our Christmas Dinner. Wanting a relaxed environment and chill after the holidays. Looking for a restaurant that could accomodate a large party of 10. The restaurant manager came to table and the thanked us, and the Waite staff was very friendly. The food was average Chinese food and atmosphere was casual. Many other large parties were there and the manager said one group comes every Christmas as tradition.
Even though the place was nearly empty, it took forever to get our food. One of the three entrees we ordered arrived when we had almost finished our meal. Our server apologized for messing up our order, but the long wait was still inexcusable.
We had this same server a few months ago when we visited, and her service was just as mediocre. We won't be back.
We were seated promptly and the service was top notch. Their menu is extensive and varied. I liked the fact that all our orders came out at the same time. The portions are overly generous so plan on bring some home.
There is convenient parking right next door for 4.oo in the evning if you can't find anything on the street.
This was my second time at Dragonwell and I think I love it even more. I had come before with a friend but came back this time with my partner. What makes this place great is the happy hour menu. We ordered 10 dishes and two drinks and got out for a little over $50 with tip. The food is fresh and flavorful. They ran out of scallion pancakes but the chef was nice enough to make us a mini pancake because I wanted my partner to taste one for the first time. Our waiter was very nice and super efficient.
The only complaint I have - and I would imagine it would be difficult for a business to monitor this easily - is that a group of four people came in 15 minutes into our meal and one in their party had a laugh resembling a bag of cats being tossed into a wood chipper. I cannot imagine that was a real laugh as it seemed designed to get everyone looking in her direction which she seemed to enjoy. It annoyed the patrons at the neighboring table as well.
But beyond the hyena shrieking, the food is great and the service is excellent. And you will not be able to beat the value.
We thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes we ordered and with 12 people to please, we had enough variety to impress everyone there. Kids loved the egg flower soup and the chow mein noodles as well as the chicken and brocolli. They were even able to substitute the shrimp in the walnut shrimp to chicken and it was excellent! For our birthday celebration, they gave out mochi balls filled with sweet beans for dessert. The wait staff was attentive and accomodated our eating restrictions.
I was hoping to take my 8 and 10 years old daughters somewhere more exciting than PF Chang. This was a tired old restaurant with and average menu and an ambiance that was set up in the 90's probably and never changed. Very disappointed, relied on the votes from Open table... clearly some have different expectations to me.
