Feast on flavorful dishes creatively prepared with local ingredients at Downtown. It has a lovely contemporary setting with an open kitchen where guests can watch their meals being made by the skillful chefs. Downtown serves appetizers like marinated chicken with lettuce cups for wrapping, Dungeness crab fondue and fried calamari with seaweed ponzu sauce. Pan-roasted Mahi Mahi, grilled dry-age rib-eye or Hawaiian chopped steak with sweet Maui onions make for fulfilling entrées. Pizza, pasta dishes, fresh salads and burgers are also delicious choices.
Downtown is located in the heart of Redwood City. It has a full bar that features a nice selection of handcrafted and domestic wine, as well as European and local beer. This restaurant provides outdoor sidewalk seating for guests wanting to enjoy the views with their food.
We came here before a show at the Fox Theatre. The food and service were great. Definitely recommend it for people visiting the area.
The place is rather small, but nice. Making a Sunday night reservation was completely unnecessary. Everyone was completely impressed and satisfied with their meal. The menu changes according to season or availability (I think), because we looked at the menu online and they didn't have a few of the items. I wanted to try their scallops, but they didn't have it on the menu in house. Other than that, it was a good find!
Celebrated two birthdays. Had great food for a reasonable price. We loved it.
Be ready to wait a bit in the evening. For brunch it was much, much better!
Very unfortunate valentines lunch. One waitress for entire restaurant who was pretty checked-out. Took 25 minutes to get water and tea, and a whopping 65 minutes from arriving until food arrived. Very sad.
My halibut special was great. The hangar steak, that my lady had, was chewy. The ambience was nice and really great service
We did not really know what to expect, but were very pleasantly suprosed at the diversity of the menu and quality of the food. We will be back!
Nice range of menu offerings to satisfy everyone in our party. Wonderful service.
NIce dowtown restaurant . Lots of choices on the menu and the fish is especially good and reasonable prices. the sea bass was a little rich but very good and healthy portions. The salads are good and lots of wine choices.
There were nine of us for dinner on Friday night after the concert at Court House Square. We all ordered something different - beef Wellimgton, pasta carbonara, linguini with prawns, salmon, and the pork chop. Everything was delicious and well presented.
We critiqued the ambiance as we noted that there were few other patrons. We decided there were several things that could be changed. First, they only have wine and beer. They really need a liquor license so that they can serve cocktails. Next, the tables had white table cloths that were covered with white paper. It seemed cheap. They should remove the white paper, use the table cloths, add votive candles, and effectively make it much more elegant. Next the artwork was off-putting - wierd faces, very abstract and not at all warm and inviting. The high ceilings give an airiness to the place, but there is nothing to make it seem comfortable. Since they can't change the ceiling height they need to make the table setting more inviting.
The food was excellent and we will be back, however, we hope the owner will consider making the suggested changes to give a better ambiance to the restaurant.
Nice place to visit with family & friends. Staff was great and the food tasty especially the calamari.
Great location mediocre food. On a Friday night you should not be serving stale bread. Boo!
We each had something different, pork dish, short rib dish , rack of lamb and a fish dish. Everyone were well pleased with their choice. My fish dish was a little bland but cook nicely. We had a Zin from the wine list, VERY GOOD. Overall will go again.
I came back because I had a great oven pizza before but they changed their menu and the waiter said they no longer make pizzas because people complained it took to long. That's really unfortunate in my opinion.
Food was good but the flank steak in my salad was very tough and not sliced thin. Waiters were great and allowed our group to stay until closing.
I'd never been to Downtown but had walked by. (I'd been to the previous restaurant, which was a breakfast place.) It looked nice enough. And the menu looked good and not too pricey. I had the whole trout (no eyeballs!) over fingerling potatoes and green beans. It was absolutely delicious. Perfectly flaky and dare I say juicy? Flavorful! Even the potatoes were extra tasty. Everyone enjoyed their food. We sat for a long time after the food arrived; no one rushed us. The servers were very attentive without pestering. When I wanted one to pass my compliments to the chef, he brought the chef out. It's an open kitchen, as well, so you can see the chefs working in the background. I will definitely come back, although I'm not sure I can stray from the trout--it was that good. Other dishes at our table included the spaghetti carbonara (with egg), the short ribs (very flavorful; harder to chew than the fish, in case you have TMJ issues), wedge salads, and Caesar salad. We all left happy and with contented tummies.
The pastas and seafood, especially the salmon, were very good. The pork chop and short ribs weren't very good at all - in fact, the ribs were inedible.
The only minorly redeeming feature of Downtown was the outdoor seating, which wasn't even good, merely adequate (stained metal tables, no tablecloths). We ordered the fondue appetizer and were pleased when we were told we could get it without the crab; however, when it arrived, I was dismayed to taste bacon (I am vegetarian). The bacon was not listed on the menu - how were we to know? The waitress was kind and understanding, and we felt badly that she's working at a sinking ship of a restaurant. The rest of the meal was bland and disappointing - average Cesar salad, and a poorly cooked Hawaiian steak for my husband. Downtown was empty even on a weekend night and we should have known it was a sign - we won't be back.
We've been to this restaurant 3 or 4 times, and every time we go with high hopes that it will be a great experience. And every time we leave thinking that it really should have been better. This time one of us had the pasta with shrimp and chili flakes (apparently there were WAY too many chili flakes) and I had the carbonara. Though the restaurant felt they were serving "Classic" carbonara (complete with the egg yolk in the middle of the pasta), what I got was a big mess of cream (which, according to just about every chef, is NOT is a Classic Carbonara) which I could not finish and gave me indigestion long into the night. It's certainly the chef's prerogative to make his food however he chooses, but maybe don't call it 'CLASSIC' if it isn't - Classic Carbonara vs. what he served is much less heavy and much more delicately seasoned. :( While the restaurant's service is good, it's an easy location to get to, and the service is always pleasant, I think we are going to give up on this restaurant. Sorry, Downtown....
We had been to this restaurant two times previously, and overall enjoyed the food and service. This time, however, they did not seem to have things 'together.' There was miscommunication about which items on the menu were available, and different servers said different things. We were told they had a new chef. In addition, the service was somewhat poor, though they were trying and were very nice. It seemed that they just didn't have things organized and working smoothly. I enjoyed the food, but the others in my group did not.
Excellent beer and wine selection. The cuisine is well crafted versions of standard comfort food. The night we were there it was very cold outside, and the restaurant was drafty.
Had an early dinner at Downtown before seeing a show in RWC. Easy parking nearby and great menu. Service was excellent and food was too. Great presentation and quality. Definite return choice.
We had an early Christmas celebration here. The kids were happy, the food, wine and service were great. would definitely come back.
I ordered 3 appetizers for $13! A flat bread pizza and apple pear salad.
I went here two nights in a row because the Menu looked interesting. The 1st night I ordered 6 appetizers & 3 entrees along with a 4 glasses of wine. Did not receive bread. Apps of: Prosciutto & Asparagus, Hummus and Smoked Salmon combination were VERY ordinary in Flavor & Presentation. Salads: Nicoise was VERY good; however the Beet and Arugula were below average. The Pizza was on a thicker dough and the flavors were not there. The Pasta Entrees were adequate in portion to price however had little flavor from the respective sauces to enjoy. On the second visit the following day, we noticed there was NOT one employee (8 total in sight) from our visit the night before working on the floor or in the cooking area?! We thought this might be a GOOD sign... The Owner was working the floor however the change of Staff and Owner's presence did NOT change the quality of plates from the previous night. We were brought bread this time which the Busboy let us know we should have had the night before. We tried 3 NEW Apps, 1 Pizza & 2 Pastas & 1 Risotto offering to another disappointment... House made Crab Raviolis were VERY Fishy Tasting & Smell instead of the sweet Crab flavor... Having nothing to do with the tomato broth; 'Wild' Mushroom Risotto had NO flavor using domestic mushrooms ONLY...Pricing & Quantity would be Fair if they could deliver the designed product and natural flavors their Chef chooses for the Menu. Or this could be another situation where the Owner needs to 'dumb it down' to allow his Staff the ability to produce with Quality instead of his own Fantasy?!
Unfortunately the restaurant's food was mediocre at best. Expensive and disappointing.
The service was horrible, the food mediocre, and when I complained no one seemed to care nor was an apology or explanation offered. I was given no reason to EVER return!
Wonderful food, casual atmosphere, very good, attentive wait staff. Went with a group of 7-people and had a truly fine time. We definitely will be back. Thanks for a great experience!
My husband and I were there on a Thursday night and it was an ok place but nothing special. Probably won't come back.
We celebrated my wife's birthday here and could not have asked for better service. Excellent food and service.
good food, employees nicely dressed, but the owner(?) came out talking to people in baggy jeans and wrinkled short sleeved shirt...not the best impression, might have been a little understaffed that evening...food good
I really wanted to like this restaurant but it failed...quite badly. The service was adequate - they tried but they were not knowledgable. The food was meh. Another negative was that they don't have a full bar, only wine and beer. Sadly we won't be returning.
The staff is friendly and attentive. I appreciate the nice selection of small plate and appetizers - Their bruschetta is especially delicious. It is a nice addition to the Redwood City downtown restaurants. We will be back.
We had a wonderful experience at Downtown. We had the bruschetta, beet salad, Kobe beef sliders and crab ravioli and all of them were just delicious. Our server was great - very friendly and helpful. Overall we will recommend Downtown to all of our friends and plan to make it one of our regular restaurants.
The service was excellent. The food was lackluster. We ordered three dips appetizer including artichoke hummus and sautéed mushrooms. The mushrooms had no specific faith flavor the artichoke was ok and hummus had no discernible flavor either. For our entrées we had a salmon Niçoise, mushroom risotto, and pancetta wrapped scallops. We also received two free apps bc our food was slow. This was odd bc we didn't inquire about the foods location.
our waiter Nole was diligent and curtious. He made wine and food recommendations that were winners! He was outgoing and made the experience very pleasent! The food was well prepared and we enjoyed outdoor dining in a nice sidewalk setting. I would recommend this place to a friend and we hope to become regulars when we relocate to Redwood City.
We had two half salads. Both were very good. We each ordered the skirt steak. It was excellent. Their gelato dessert was ordinary.
We've only been here for dinner, so can't comment on the rest. Noel, our waiter, was THE BEST, the kitchen was right on with everything they created. Everyone was friendly, yet professional. We were a group of 8, not always easy, but no one ever missed a step. We sampled much of the menu, sliders, lamb, salads, I had a trio of veggies for my dinner... fantastic and the desserts!!! Wow! Great bread pudding, amazing Apple Tart... the crust!!!
I know Downtown is the new kid on the block, but don't understand why there wasn't a line out the door......
they had a power outage but were still able to keep our reservations.....food was great...love the small plte choices
Recently opened, Downtown has the potential and deserves to become a vibrant part of the downtown Redwood City dining experience. Food and presentation are excellent. They are still getting all the details right, e.g. the artichoke appetizer was served with only four pieces of bread, not nearly enough for the generous serving. Looking forward to my next visit!
Kids and adults really enjoyed the food, waited was really nice bringing crayons and asking girls to draw him a butterfly. Food was good to excellent. We'll be back!
