I really enjoyed my Oaxacan Dream cocktail, altho I did not taste the tequila, nor did I think there was much in there! IE: I usually order one cocktail at dinner, but had two and did not feel hardly any effects of the liquor?!? Too bad, cuz I had a designated driver that night.
Definitely interesting meal with novel combinations. Did enjoy the calamari, done Kung Pao style, the Korean style rice cake, and their version of Korean fried drumsticks. Large portions. Major flaw is a skimpy wine list.
Amazing food and drinks; atmosphere is elegant and fun.
Exceptional service! Great food in an interesting atmosphere. Very handy to downtown activities. Parking adjacent to building but not many spaces. Maybe the best restaurant in Tucson.
Went with a group of four and we shared appetizers (Calamari and KFC) both were very nice. Each of us took a different entree and we shared bites. The entrees selected were the duck, salmon, pork tenderloin, and beef medallions. Everyone was very happy with their selection and we all agreed that it was difficult to select the best of the four. We also got a to-share dish of spicy rice cake and we drank a bottle of California Pinot Noir with the meal. Everyone was happy with their selection and the wine.....good food, good wine, and spent in the company of friends!!!
Great restaurant with delicious food and great ambiance. The abondigas soup was delicious as was the quail I had. My husband had a wonderful Caesar salad with the special for the night which was fried chicken and collard greens. Service was great and perfect for a quiet date night.
This may be more of a personal like or dislike but we felt the contemporary menu was limited and there was too much effort on trying to be unique rather than high quality. Had the chicken entree and this was presented with chicken thighs with low quantity of meat. On the positive side, the waitress was super nice and efficient.
Downtown Kitchen is one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. This was my 3rd time here and we were celebrating two of my kids birthdays. Had the calamari appetizer, along with their spinach salad. Three of us had the pork tenderloin and the other two had the salmon. All were outstanding, as was their cocktails. Desserts were mango pie and chocopie sundae.
From the moment we walked in the door, we were treated like guests in someone’s home ! The food was outstanding, the server was prompt, and the fall menu was varied.
It was two of our parties birthdays, and the manager made sure to stop by our table, congratulate the birthday guests, and presented them with complimentary deserts. We will definitely return.
Brian was knowledgeable about the menu. Loved that the food was farm to table / locally grown
Creative menu - unique enhancements to standards. One of the best calimari combinations we’ve tried. Good choices of meat, fish and veggie entrees. Solid wine list with reasonable prices. We’ll return.
Great service. Close to any downtown venue you’d want to get to later in evening.
Salmon delicious, as was the quail. Lots of great cocktails options, but my only complaint is that they under-pour the alcohol content significantly.
We were a party of six and had a lovely table away from the center of the restaurant with a rock/light
display as a backdrop. I am remiss at not knowing our server's name but she was wonderful- attentive
and helpful and patient as out party did not quite all arrive at the same time. The menu is creative
and amusing (favorite dish name-A DUCK WALKED INTO......) Our salmon entree was delicious and
there were raves all around about the mushroom garlic bread appetizer and albondigas soup. This is
a perfect pre or post play/concert restaurant and is in easy walking distance of several downtown
venues. We will return!
Loved the vibe and the food. Good service even though we sat outside on a Sat night.
I've been here a few times and was never too impressed, but always loved Janos's food at the old location. After eating there the other night, I would not return unless it was happy hour. The price of the food and the quality that came out were FAR from reasonable. The food I got (Korean-Around the World) was not quality meat and was not very good tasting at all. I could list 3 other places to eat the same food and all of them would have cost us 1/4 of the price. The only reason I would return here is the Happy Hour menu which would lower the cost of the food to be closer to the value of what you're paying.
There are many reasons why we think of Downtown Kitchen as THE best restaurant in Tucson. It begins with Chef Janos' creativity; regularly changing and building a menu around a particular theme. During this six-week period the menu is focused on the food of South Korea. And, of course, the food preparation and flavor was outstanding. We've never had anything but a terrific experience at Downtown Kitchen.
Major disappointment. We booked this restaurant on the recommendation of one of our party that said the chef had a great history of innovative food preparation. She has since changed her mind. The mojitos were subpar, the quail dinner was served cold and drowned in the balsamic dressing, the flank steak was especially tough, and the bo ssam was over salted. Service was excellent to start but non-existent after the restaurant became busier. We drove an hour for this dinner but all four in the party agreed we would not repeat.
Finally a restaurant that understands the complete dining experience. Waiter Ryan was great. They anticipate and are totally aware of the entire experience.
Great happy hour food and drinks. I would definitely go back.
Interesting cuisine! We were delighted with our meals - nice blend of spices and flavor in the vegetable curry. And an explosion of flavors with the fish balls. The rice cakes with the fish balls were too soft for us.
Super food, funky downtown ambiance, good service.
We almost always enjoy eating here, but this time, I chose the wrong entree. We’ve been to Morocco and loved the tagines. We’ve even fixed them at home after we bought some Moroccan cookbooks. So when I saw Moroccan chicken tagine on the menu, a rare find in Tucson (unfortunately), I was excited and looked forward to Janos preparation. The mango gazpacho we ordered first was delicious and a great beginning, but the tagine was bad enough that both of us had stomach upsets during the night. It lacked the wonderful flavors we know well, it was mushy and over cooked except for the dried apricots which were seemingly still dried and just cut into strips lying over the soggy, oily mix keeping them from flavoring the tagine. This is so unlike what we’ve known that we will go back, but we will be reluctant to order a tagine no matter how much we love them.
Everything, from our food to our service, was outstanding!
This is one of our favorite restaurants as Janos is one of the best chefs ANYWHERE not only in AZ. We've dined here many times and have never had any negative experiences - until this visit. We'd been reading about the Sunday fried chicken special and just haven't been able to make it until this week. We had an early reservation and when we got there (about 5:30pm) the place only had a few diners (we knew it would and it later did fill up). When we were seated, I said we don't need a menu as we wanted the fried chicken. Our (new) server got an uncomfortable look on his face and asked if we "reserved it in advance". We hadn't and didn't know we were supposed to. Needless to say, we were disappointed and we asked for the manager, who got the "OK" from the kitchen to make orders of dark meet chicken special for us (they didn't have enough as someone had called to be sure they would have enough when they came later that evening). My friend doesn't like dark meet so passed; I got it and it was as good as I'd expected, but the rest of the night we were treated like we had been really treated special (in a negative type of way - e.g., our server didn't even pour wine I'd ordered as he thought were going to leave).
I can't over-emphasize how much I love this restaurant but did need to comment on the most recent experience. If it is a "special" it should be available for all - and if there is a limited quantity or the anticipation that they may run out, it should say so on the website and all the announcements sent out. Janos - thanks for ALL you do for our community and sorry for this less than stellar review, but I felt you needed to know this.
Still my favorite Tucson restaurant!Never dissapointed.
We had a very nice experience at Downtown Kitchen and Cocktails. The cocktail I had, the Violet was really good and the mushroom bread appetizer was excellent! The main course was very satisfying and more food than I could eat. We loved the ambiance, just a nice vibe in there.
Visited for a happy hour dinner before a concert, so impressed! Everything about the restaurant was enjoyable - and if and when we find ourselves in Tucson again, we will most definitely will be back!
Always an interesting and diverse food selection focusing on an area of the globe.
Loved the food and our server was great. A little noisy, though.
The place was sort of hidden without a big sign with name of restaurant so we guessed it had to be it. We were 45 min late for reservation but they were very gracious and seated us immediately. My crafted drink was jalapeño infused and I liked it. My husbands drink was a Manhatten. He loved the himachi appetizer and I liked the mushroom bread app. He had the salmon which he said was just ok. Over cooked. I had the veggie tostada app for my entree which was good but only came with one small tostada and cost $11 which was disappointing. We had wine which was fine and the dessert was mango pie. We had a good experience and enjoyed it for the most part. I would try it again. I would recommend they have more vegan options.
My Moroccan chicken dinner had THE BEST couscous ever! The dinner was colorful. My 3 amigos at dinner each had their own special dining experience. We shared a desert after dinner -- all 3 of us waddled out of The Downtown Kitchen full & happy.
Before dinner we had a drink at the bar. The bartender, Chuck, was fun to hang out with. His passion for food came through soon enough and we all enjoyed learning from him about food sources, and food in general.
Our server, Taylor, was efficient, friendly, and a pleasure to have. Her positive attitude along with her helpfulness with a few food questions, had us believing in her very quickly.
Downtown Kitchen is a special place. We will come back for another dining experience at this Tucson gem.
My girlfriend took me to DOWNTOWN Kitchen in celebration of my birthday. I had made the reservations through OpenTable and did mention the birthday in hopes of better seating and attention. My girlfriend had been there several times before and absolutely raved about the food. Given that background: the service was amazing and we were seated at a booth for four. The food: not so amazing. We had the calamari appetizer, which was probably the best calamari I've ever had. Went way downhill after that. I had the quail, which was overpowered by the vinegar dressing. And to be honest, there were more greens than anything else on the plate. My friend had the vegetable curry; the curry flavor was almost absent, overpowered by some other unknown flavor. Neither one of us finished our main course -- both of which, by the by, were recommended by our waiter. We both decided on the Peach Amaretti Gelato + Marsala Zabaglione, primarily because I have never had zabaglione. We were served, instead, with the Pear + Ginger Sorbet. Deciding to taste it before it went back, we both found it overwhelmingly spiced with ginger lychee. After about two bites, we requested that we get the gelato dish. How disappointing: vanilla ice cream that wasn't even good ice cream and what my friend suspected was canned peaches topped with stale nuts. There was no zabaglione whatsoever. Neither one of us came close to finishing the dish. The reason for the four star rating of the staff instead of five: at no time did anyone ask "What was wrong?" The waiter clearing the table clearly knew something was wrong because neither dish was anywhere near finished. And we were clearly unsatisfied with the dessert. In general, a big disappointment. Final observation: cocktail hour is in the bar only and that fact is not mentioned when seated in the dining area.
The ambiance, service, and food was very good. The menu options are creative and very tasty. The location is great and the old building has lots of charm.
Interesting menu. Very creative dishes. Beautiful presentation and great service as well. Portions are large . Cocktails are yummy.
Usually, the Downtown Kitchen and Cocktails is one of our favorite Tucson restaurants and we always go away very happy with our meals. We also often bring out of town guests there as well and feel confident that they too will really enjoy the cuisine and ambiance. This visit we both found our meals to be much less satisfying than the usual fare that we have at DKC. The meals seemed to lack the usual rich flavors of entrees and side dishes that we have enjoyed. The menu does change every several months and we must have selected more subtly flavored items. We still highly recommend DKC and really enjoy visiting happy hour there as well with their good wine, beer and cocktail selections along with great appetizers.
Drinks were good and original.
Food not so good. The short ribs were short on meat and long on fat. If we ever go back I would definitely not order the short ribs.
Not a place to go if you want to try to carry on a conversation.
As usual, DTK was fabulous. The occasion of our 54th wedding anniversary and there was no doubt that we would go with friends to Downtown Kitchen. We did and the meal was fabulous. Especially good was the calamari appetizer and the chocolate/jalapeno sundae (gratis). Server was attentive as was the whole staff. Thanks DTK--you are still a winner.
Food was good, but nothing extraordinary that would make me want to come back.
Good food, nicely presented. Many choices. Good service for an early dinner. Will return.
What a fantastic dinner! Great to see my home host to such a lovely spot for such good food and excellent service. Prices were really great for such a good experience. Would certainly go again. Many options, some healthy, some not so, but certainly all delicious. The chocolate jalepeno ice cream is a must!
