Downtown Grille Ratings and Reviews
Service was slow on a quiet evening. Two different years of the wine we chose were on the menu, but the year that was rated and that we ordered was not available.
Nothing comes on the plate except the meat you order. Most entrees are over $30, and the specials higher than anything on the menu. All sides and salads are extra. We ordered rack of lamb, the burger, filet of beef, and the ribeye, all of which were good. The quality is Choice, not Prime which was surprising in a steakhouse.
However, french press coffee for $4 was thin and weak. The Salted Caramel Vanilla Crumb Cake was runny and flavorless. All in all the restaurant is overpriced and disappointing.
This was, hands down, the best steak I have ever eaten! Everything about it was perfect. I also must recommend the pumpkin cheesecake for dessert - my husband and I are still talking about it! The wonderful staff even surprised us with a candle in the dessert for my husband's birthday. We loved our evening at the Downtown Grille.
Food was excellent, but the server was not friendly or even interested. When asking for something, he didn't even acknowledge the request. Our bill was over $1,000, and I certainly wouldn't have given him 20%. It was if he knew he'd make the tip so he put in no effort. This is the third business meal I've had there, and it's the same service every time.
Was having a quiet vacation dinner with my wife and a group of 12 to 14 business or conference people were seated around us. BAD, VERY BAD! 2 or 3 loud ones ruined the atmosphere talking across to each other and visiting. Would have preferred they be in a back room, keep the front for less drunk and more considerate diners. If they must be in the front remind them of proper etiquette; they resembled the Blues Bros.
Excellent in every way. NY strip with cabernet butter was melt in your mouth. Crab cakes with absolutely no filler -- massive pieces of lump crab for your dining pleasure. Excellent and responsive service, top end dining experience from this neighborhood steak house. A Charlottesville must-see and have. Took my sweetheart here for her birthday -- we were treated like royalty with the speed demanded of a majestic court. A finer experience I have not had.
I arranged a dinner here after an event at the Paramount. I made a change to our reservation last minute and the restaurant was very good about it. Overall, the experience was average at best. Our table was just about IN the kitchen which made conversation with our guests a challenge. The crashing dishes only added to the ambience. Appetizers were okay. The entrees took a very long time to arrive and the Waiter, well he just wasn't engaged. I had a NY Strip. It was a bad cut and extremely over seasoned. Forgettable.
Desserts, well don't go near the Smores Sundae. It is basically a deconstructed campfire smore, only they should have left it constructed. I could just picture Gordon Ramsey getting served that. We actually thought they were joking when they served it. Any good waiter would have steered us away.
Just can't recommend this place, too many gaps and too many other solid eateries in the area to choose from.
Our table was considerably noisier than the last time I visited, and it seemed the menu had been reduced - although that may have been my imagination. On both occasions I chose the restaurant to entertain an out-of-town guest, on the basis that the tables are well spaced making conversation possible. This somehow didn't quite occur on Saturday.
The service was impeccable- the workers were almost like a dance team -smooth, efficient and flawless.
The food was excellent and presentation was just as good.
We loved sitting near the kitchen to watch all the activity involved in fixing the dinners.
Great place, we will return.
Group of four good friends had a special and delightful after-cinema dinner. From the moment we arrived, when special seating was provided, to the last moment when our wraps were graciously placed on our shoulders, the service was extraordinarily fine. Except for one entre, the food was delicious (especially the mussels!). An excellent substitute was very graciously provided for the not-up-to-standard entre.
We made an early reservations as we had plans for a concert. The staff was very professional and courteous. Service was attentive. The atmosphere was terrific. They have both inside and outside seating. Many selections on the menu, from steaks, lobster, seafood, lamb. Sides are ala carte and plenty to feed two people. Wonderful meal and worth the price.
Third time at Downtown Grill and disappointed this time around. I've been before and enjoyed my meals a lot. This time, we thought the food was good, but not great. But at the prices you pay, you would expect an excellent meal. We ordered mussels to start and definitely disappointed with the quality of the mussels. They did not taste fresh. The broiled seafood platter was good but very rich (lots of butter). The rack of lamb and brussel sprouts were very good. Our bill was over $100 for two people and we thought it was an overall okay experience. The best part was sitting outside on a beautiful night, people watching.
