We had a great time at Downtown Grill for our belated Valentines Dinner. Upon arriving, waiting for a table is a little awkward. The area to wait is very tight, smells old (which is part charming), and there was an open closet that was an unsightly distraction to an otherwise interesting location.
We waited at the bar for our table to be ready as we purposely arrived about a half hour early to our reservation. The bartender served double duty as host, though he didn’t have a good way to navigate the space, which led to long wait times for the 5 seat bar. He was very entertaining and led to good laughs in conversation.
Our service was spectacular, and the food absolutely delicious. Exactly as you would expect for an upscale restaurant. However, we were a bit surprised when the bill showed up, as we had ordered one of the specials, which was a $47 plate of Elk. Again, this was delicious, but we had no warning before ordering. We also ordered a plate with market prices scallops- again, no warning- which created another almost $30 plate (which is reasonable, comparably).
Besides the surprise of the bill, the experience was overall very nice, and we will absolutely return, on special occasions.
We came in for a nice quick dinner before a show. That was apparently a mistake. The food was great. Our server was nowhere to be found and it took forever.
On Saturday 2/17, I had a 645pm reservation for 4 at this restaurant which I made through Open Table on 2/10. We were with our friends visiting from Naples, Fl for a special dinner. We arrived at Downtown Grill at 6:20pm and checked in with the hostess and sat at the bar to wait. The hostess came over and asked to see my reservation which I showed her on my phone. She and the bartender talked back and forth and I eventually found out they had given my reservation away to someone with a "similar name". We were told several times they were working on a table. I made it clear to the hostess that we wanted a table in the dining room not in the bar area. After asking several times and seeing many customers being seated ahead of us at 7pm the bartender advised all they had was a table in the bar area and offered free appetizers or deserts etc. this was totally unacceptable to us as we watched many customers being seated while we waited, why were they net seated in the bar? The staff handled this horrible and acted like they could care less about our business. We walked to the Tic Toc Room and explained our situation and they welcomed us and mad accomodatinos within 15 minutes. Take some lessons Downtown Grill in customer service, you need it!
I ordered the nightly special, which was "Elk" and my wife ordered the Maple Leaf Duck Breast. The food was tasty and served timely, however I was a little disappointed in the toughness of the meat. I have done a little research and found that it is typically tender, as in the rib-eye range - mine was more like a choice NY Strip. The duck breast was a little on the cold side as the "leaves" are cut fairly small resulting in a very quick cool down. The taste was acceptable.
As with most restaurants of this style, the ambiance and environment was excellent as was the service. I would recommend but I would say stay with the more popular menu items like the filet, rib-eye or seafood.
Never been to the Downtown Grill but heard nothing but great things about it. Let me say we loved every minute we were there. Great atmosphere, food was amazing, and service was on point. Will definitely put this on our list of top places to eat.
Didn’t like the cigarette smoke and smell from bar area. You have to walk through this area to dine.
Was looking for an upscale restaurant in Macon to treat our Mercer College Student. The food was just ok. I had the shrimp and grits. Disappointing. Portions were small as well. Expected more from the food. The server was good and very helpful.
Excellent service. Was not that impressed with the standard menu but the daily specials were very interesting and all of us chose from them. One order of mussels for three of us was plenty. The only course that was simply pedestrian was the salads. Very good wine list.
The food was not prepared well. I had veal and it was rubbery my friend had pork and it was overcooked. Very disappointed.
Great romantic dinner with delicious food!
Service was wonderful!
I love Downtown Grill. Drinks are superb and the meal spectacular. None of the entrees were disappointing from the salmon to the cowboy steaks. Service is the best around. Our server was attentive, patient, and had a great sense of humor.
The chef is simply the best chef south of Atlanta.
I visited this restaurant while in town to visit family at Christmas. The hostess, Anna, gave great directions over the phone and when we arrived she ushered us to our table as well as 3 other guests who arrived a bit later. She represented the restaurant well and gave a pleasant start to the evening.
Our waiter, Adam, was FANTASTIC. His recommendations were spot on to the point that we just asked that he make most of the choices for us...IE "Adam just bring me something good" or "just tell the bartender to mix me something unique". He provided gentle humor throughout the night and at other times when we were deep in conversation he would float unto and away from the table without us noticing he was there.
His recommendations were all delicious. The tuna and the mussel appetizers were devoured quickly. The filet with blue cheese and filet with shrimp scampi were slap ya mama good. And the orders of various chicken dishes were all great. The worst part of the meal is leaving the restaurant and realizing I may have to coordinate schedules to be sure I get the same waiter next time.
I made a reservation for my teams holiday dinner. We waited an hour past the reservation time to be seated. They were out of baked potatoes and grit fritters. Our waiter did not introduce himself and the food was medicore. Very dissapointed.
Restaurant smelled like old dirty ashtrays. Limited menu. Service was slow. Quality of food was overpriced. Scallops were very gritty.
Great ambiance and food! Outstanding service and all around great evening!
We had not been to Downtown Grill since the decor had been renovated. The new decor is very pleasing. The food was very good as was the service. The only reason that we don't go more is the fact that you have to navigate the cigar smoke in the front room to access the dining room.
Excellent food and server was great. Great resturant!
Took my wife for our anniversary date to Downtown Grill and was not disappointed. Cozy and romantic atmosphere with wonderful food. I had the aged ribeye, which was a special, and it was one of the best steaks I have ever eaten at a restaurant. My wife ordered the grilled chicken and it was melt in your mouth kind of good. I know as she let me try it. We both had grilled broccoli and the button mushrooms as our sides and were very pleased. The mushrooms were especially tasty. I am now looking to make reservations for a return trip so we can explore the menu and add this to our favorites.
Wife Ordered Snapper only to be told later they had run out. Very disappointing
