A friend recommended the Dovetail during our visit to Macon. We were celebrating my wife’s professional award and the ambiance of the Restrauant was excellent. We guys ordered the Tommyhawk pork chop which was a very nice portion with maple syrup and sauerkraut sweet potatoes and perfectly grilled. Great night
So glad we finally checked out Dovtail Saturday night! It’s rare to find this level of superb food paired with such graceful, attentive, and knowledgeable service. We are so thankful to have had Maury wait on us...he provided expert guidance through the menu and recommended the perfect wine pairings. We took his advice and started the meal with the cheese plate. Amazing combination of American artisan cheeses complimented with house pickled veggies and bacon marmalade (which I will never forget). After struggling to decide which dishes to order, we decided to do our own tasting, and so we ordered all of the “small plates.” We gratefully enjoyed huge buttermilk fried gulf shrimp, plump seared scallops over pimento cheese risotto, veal loin with local potatoes and Gouda mornay, and roasted medium-rare duck breast with cranberry mostarda and turnip roots. We then shared the chocolate-peanut butter bark for dessert, which paired beautifully with the sherry I enjoyed so much.
The ambiance was perfect: the room was a combination of homespun charm and elegant sophistication...perfectly complimenting the style of food.
I can’t say enough about Maury and the support staff. He was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the food and wine/spirit selections, yet was very descreet in his service style. He was only there when we needed him, and allowed us to enjoy our date when we didn’t. That is a lost art these days. Every other staff member we encountered was also warm and attentive, caring for our experience as if we were their only guests.
Keep up the good work Dovetail, and we’ll be back again and again. Thank you for the unforgettable night with my Love!
The blackened filet of fish was dry and over cooked. Both the blue cheese grits and risotto were unexceptional.
By contrast, the blanched spinach and deviled eggs were very good.
The management team and staff were delightful. The venue was comfortable and very appealing.
We drove over an hour to try Dovetail. It was probably the best dinner we’ve ever had! Wait staff was attentive. The menu is limited because it’s a Farm to Table restaurant using all local ingredients. The four in our dining party enjoyed everything we ordered and we ordered extra dishes “just to taste it”. Wine list is extensive. A great meal!
Your staff was wonderful. I made a reservation for 10 and of course, 3 people added on at the last minute. Your staff took it in stride, adding 3 place settings for us and being very cordial about it. Water was kept full (I appreciate this as i drink a lot of water!) and I liked the practice of refilling wine glasses rather than bringing new ones. Thanks for a great experience for our business dinner!
Great food and awesome service. The beef tenderloin was cooked to perfection. It was our weekly date night and our first trip to Dovetail. The cracked pie was suggested as our dessert and it was the bomb. The b bartender made a killer dirty martini with my new favorite vodka Elit. We will be back soon. Loved it.
Dove Tail is usually our go to place for a good meal or to entertain guest. However, the last two visits I have been taken back when we are told, as we are being seated at our table that we made prior reservations for , that other guest will be arriving at 7:30 for this table. What? Really? That is like saying “ eat fast, we really do not care if this was suppose to be a special occasion for you”. Which by the way when I made the reservation I was ask what the occasion was, to which I said Birthday. Why
would you ask what the occasion was if you did not intend on acknowledging? I was not looking for an acknowledgement but then when ask about it I thought, maybe they do something special for occasions. Guess not
My wife and I had to travel from Atlanta to Tifton for an event, and chose to stop mid trip. Dovetail had been recommend by a friend, and we were not disappointed.
First, I should thank Kevin for being so accommodating with our reservation, as our arrival time changed a couple times that day. Also, they made sure to have a piece of the Crack Pie (?) for my wife's birthday. - Wicked good!
Food quality and portions were spot on. Great variety and creativity, and although we ordered only the small plates and a side to share, we left full. The veal was cooked perfectly, and our only regret is that we could not finish the Mac & Cheese. Oh, get the cheese plate, if only for the bacon preserves. The rest of the items were also very good, but bacon preserves; Awesome! We actually bought two jars to take home.
The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable, and we would certainly go out of our way to eat here again.

We had two apps, a bottle of cabernet, two entrees and one dessert and everything was consistently outstanding. Not flashy, but made with care and knowledge and a spirit of celebration regarding the good things to eat that are produced in our region. The service manages to find the perfect balance between "take this food seriously" and "we are a pretentious place." Costs a bit higher than some places in town, but value is excellent and plenty of low cost alternatives on the menu for those who light in the pocket. Dovetail is my new favorite restaurant.
People always seem surprised to learn that one of the best restaurants in the entire state of Georgia is hidden away above a noisy bar in downtown Macon. But Dovetail is in fact there, and Brad Stevens, the chef de cuisine, is doing amazing things.
On our most recent visit, we were both intrigued by a shaved green tomato salad, with soft goat cheese, lightly pickled shallots, pickled mustard seeds, spicy baby arugula, and a lemon vinaigrette. It's not often that you see a chef spend as much creative energy perfecting a salad as he would a main course, but that was what we were shown here, and it was a perfect beginning to our evening.
My wife chose one of the small plates: a veal tenderloin with roasted potatoes and a Gouda mornay sauce, garnished with bacon and maple Dijon. She reported that it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. My entree was the evening's special: lightly seared yellow snapper bedded on a low mound of barely stir-fried vegetables, with a lemony sauce and a little chili oil. it was beautifully presented and utterly delicious.
And finally, we came to dessert. We both selected the cheese plate from Dovetail's appetizer menu as our dessert. Yes we know it's supposed to be an appetizer, and yes, we know it's intended to be shared, but when you pair it with good coffee and a 20-year-old port it's the most wonderful dessert you could imagine, and it's too luscious to share. Last Friday, it featured a smoked Spanish cheese reminiscent of a Gouda, a native Georgia cheese which reminded me of a lightly aged farmhouse cheddar and a fresh mozzarella that I think was from North Carolina. With bacon marmalade, prosciutto, coarse spicy mustard, lightly pickled asparagus, some pecans, warm crusty yeast rolls with a house made berry conserve.
If you have occasion to be in Macon, you should make time for a leisurely dinner at Dovetail. You won't regret it.
Went there for a birthday celebration. The food was delicious, service was excellent. This place is upstairs from a lively bar, so we were a little surprised when we walked in thinking we were not getting what we expected, but once we found our way upstairs we walked into a beautiful, quiet, classy restaurant.
We were in Macon overnight and picked the Dovetail from the OPen Table description. It is hard to find, but well worth it. There are only a few tables, so it is quiet. The servers are helpful in food choices and give excellent care without hovering.
But the reason to go is the food. Without Question, that was the best meal either of us has had at a restaurant in years. I grade all pasta on a scale established in Ravenna IT twenty years ago. Dovetail was a 9 1/2 or more. The flavors were piled on top of each other and just kept coming.
We rearranged our plans so we could eat there on the way back, but the eye of the hurricane was headed for our house, so we were denied a second meal. We'll get it sometime.
If you are driving on 75 and plan to stop in Atlanta for dinner, stop early or late (depending on your direction) and get off at Macon and eat at the Dovetail.
The service and food was wonderful. We did brunch here on a Sunday and I would highly recommend this spot to anyone who loves farm-to-table meals. Mark was our server and he accommodated someone in our party with a long list of food allergies. She enjoyed all of the options he gave her, and there was a lot of variety on the menu. I will definitely be going back.
