DOSA on Fillmore is a San Francisco restaurant that offers an urban take on South Indian cuisine. By putting a Californian twist on the flavors of Indian food, the chef and owner has created a local hotspot. Guests can drop in to DOSA on Fillmore for dinner or weekend brunch.
Start your meal at DOSA with pumpkin and curry leaf soup or a lamb kebab slider. The menu features a seasonal tasting section, a small plates section and a section for heartier fare. Enjoy Alaskan wild salmon smoked with cauliflower and rice in an apricot curry. Plenty of vegetarian options at DOSA on Fillmore mean that everyone can find something to love.
It is one thing when you have a bad experience at a restaurant with a good reputation, experiences like 3 wines you select are not available, the main dish you went for has sold out by 7:00 pm; the small plates take 40 minutes to arrive and then the servers pile on the main course before you had a chance with the small plates. When the only waitress on the floor is moving from table to table in an attempt to sell more liquor rather than bring you desert menus which you had asked for 3 separate times.
But it is entirely different when call the manager a few days later and he agrees with you that the service on that day was atrocious, and the only way he offered to remedy the bad experience is to offer you a reservation on your next visit by calling his mobile number instead of using Open Table.
Dosa on Fillmore used to be one of my favorite restaurant. Now I know how uncaring the management is, I will not eat there again.
We visit Dosa every year while visiting the Bay area. Its a fun place and we like Indian food. Shockingly, I just called to make a reservation and the host who answered told me "I'm busy now, can you call back tomorrow". Makes one wonder what his job entails. Guess we won't be going back to Dosa this trip...or maybe ever. Poor customer service.
I live in the neighborhood, so have been here numerous times. Bringing houseguests from Nashville to DOSA was a success, despite they not being familiar with southern Indian cuisine. They enjoyed the dosas and uttapam, and were BLOWN AWAY by their cocktails, the papadum & chutneys, and the lamb chops. The service was really nice, and it was GREAT to have a normal conversation without resorting to SHOUTING. Well done, yet again!
The food is good. It would be great if the restaurant allow room for some substitutions. The restaurant is a bit rigid with the menu. Same goes for the bar. The cocktail menu looks spectacular, but the restaurant will not make certain modifications to their menu such as a little less sweet or a bit more spicy. It's great for dinners who loves everything exactly the way it is, but not for those with specific requirements.
In general I can only say I was disappointed with the food, value and service at Dosa. The plates were just OK to me, and very disappointing to family members I brought here who love Southern Indian food more than I do. The clincher was when all but one of our dishes had arrived at a somewhat weird and unpredictable rate and order, the waiter finally asked if that would be it. We indicated we hadn't gotten all the entrees we ordered and she went back to the kitchen, presumably. After waiting another good while, the plate appeared - four vegetarian meatballs smothered on white sauce with no rice or bread to sop up the sauce. We will not be going back to Dosa, and cannot recommend it.
Wonderful food! However, it is very pricey for Indian food. Spent $75 on two entrees and bhatura (a very delicious, fried, puffy bread - highly recommended to get with your curry). I didn't even buy drinks! I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and he enjoyed it very much. The only thing is that I would have to say our server was not very attentive, but instead someone else that was not assigned to our table took our order and brought the food to us. I would definitely come back again though!
The food came to us not too late not too soon, and the flavors were phenomenal. Will come again!
Went there on a Saturday expecting to have lunch, and was pleasantly surprised to have brunch options! Spicy egg curry and egg dosa were excellent! The only downside was that it was freezing in there, we had to wear our coats throughout the meal.
DOSA was delicious as always! The space is beautiful and the staff couldn't be more solicitous, especially when I dine here with my father who uses a walker.
Delicious food, good service, I was not blown away but also no complaints. Prices are ok for SF but if you've ever lived in Asia, just try not to compare/convert!
I have eaten at Dosa at least three times before and have never been impressed. I didn't expect much from my last dinner, but it turned out to be delicious! Fourth time was a charm
Delicious as always. Lots of pumpkin dishes which my guest didn't want..will have to go back. She's gluten-avoiding and I was delighted to learn that dosas are not made w wheat.
Dosa was great as always. Most of us enjoyed our food very much but one picky friend complained about her dish. The manger kindly came and spoke to her, tried to make it right, and in the end took it off her bill. That's one more reason I love both Dosa locations in the city.
The sat us down 30 minutes after our reservation time and handled the delay poorly
The concept is creative and worthwhile but lacking in execution given the expense of the food. Similar food with comparable taste profile is available at many restaurants featuring south Indian food at 1/2 to 2/3rd's the cost. In my opinion, the food needs to be elevated with more complex flavors to justify the price. In addition, the complimentary papadam, although very much appreciated, was marred by an oily sheen. The food is not bad; it is good but is below that expected in this price range.
It has been years and years since I enjoyed a good Dosa comparable to those I ate in the UK. As luck would have it, I was seated next to a perfectly delightful guy on my flight to SFO and he highly recommended Dosa on Fillmore.
Immediately this became part of my itinerary and I dined there this evening. Although it's Diwali, I decided against the special menu as I wasn't sure I'd be able to eat it all and, instead opted for a Samosa starter and Mung Bean Dosa. Both dishes were wonderful - just the right amount of heat and accompanied by delicious sauces for dipping. I wish I'd had room for more, but had to give in at a certain point because I was so full!
The ambience and decor is lovely and quite comfortable. Service was fantastic as well. Thank you seat mate, Ryan, for this recommendation. It was spot on for me and I will be back!
The service was spotty, wrong dishes were brought to our table. The food was sub standard for the prices. Overly spiced to cover nuances and very dissatisfying. The restaurant's namesakes were dry and bland.
Fantastic South Indian food. Always fresh and well prepared.
Goat Cheese Gem Salad was amazing as was Chicken Korma, Pumpkin Chutney, and Seasonal Brussels Sprouts and Squash Sorayi. Never disappointed at Dosa. Server was also exceptional not to mention surprising cocktail creations.
I had a bit of a mix up with my reservation, but they more than made up for it after the manager ran two blocks to bring me back. The food, a pumpkin Dosa, was fantastic. And the Jaffers syrah was a great accompaniment!
Took my partner here for her B-day. Loved the menu: the chef is fearless in fusing different genres, and it seems to me would experiment similar seasonings from other cultures common also to South Indian cuisine. We did not venture into the menu too deeply, as we are not ravenous eaters. But that is what subsequent visits can be about.
The wine list also was quite broad: I ordered a Sula Sauvignon Blanc, which was a perfect pairing with our items. When a second glass arrived, it was not quite the same. When I had mention this to my wait-staff, the sommelier made amends by offering a new bottle to rectify the issue, explaining that the vintner was still tweaking and testing in an attempt to resolve the sugar residuals in this particular vintage. I found this gesture interesting and educating. We are both excited to return. Bravo!
I've been too Dosa in the past. Unlike most other Indian restaurants, this place had a touch of class and good food to boot. I used to bring out of towners and they loved the place. The last couple of times I've been embarrassed at the quality and choice of food. When paying that much or even half the price I expect the quality of my dinner to be be much better. Disappointed.
Pathetic..the service was impolite from the checking in to the service..
We are very fond of Dosa at Fillmore in SF. Food is always great. If you are up for spicy South Indian food, this is your place to go to. They have seasonal menu and celebrate Indian festivals. Service is is consistently good. Wine pairing could have been better. I think they need a Sommelier who knows about Indian food.
All and all, I love this place.
Great service; good food. Our server was on-top of her game, well aware and attentive. She recommended really good dishes, that we could enjoy. It was an evening to remember. Thank you Katie.
We had made a reservation for 845 pm. However, we happened to arrive to the restaurant an hour and half early than the reservation. We checked in to ask if we were able to get a table before. Unfortunately they were not able to accommodate a table for us.
We went back at 845, and our table was waiting for us. The starters were very good, small but enough to be appetizers. The entrees were interesting and filling enough, despite the portion of the food. Overall, I would go back if I am in the area and/or be there 10 min before the reservation. Otherwise, they usually don't take walk-ins during busy nights or weekends.
PS. The wine list was impressively long and it offered a good variety of wines.
I have been eating at Dosa for years and every meal has been expertly prepared. They use fresh and high quality ingredients. Their presentations are beautiful, and flavors are full and rich. They have an excellent unique cocktail list using house made tonics and bitters.
You can never go wrong with Dosa. This is my go to place for out town guests or just a lovely meal after work.
We liked the south Indian moons.
Great food and really cool place...fantastic service. I loved the food and I thought the dosa was yummy. The sliders were amazing. Just a great place for a really flavor filled meal.
Dosa is a place for the traditional and modern/fusion South Indian cuisine. The sambar is really good and I like how they did not go easy on the spiciness. I ordered the truffled masala dosa which was good. I wasn't able to taste any truffle on the dosa but the dosa was nice and crispy.
Overall, I would like to come back for dinner as my visit was for lunch.
Food: 4/5
Service: 5/5
Value: 4/5
When I'm back for work or vacation I surely will come back along with recommend this place.
Love Dosa. It's a favorite neighborhood place and our default go to for a spontaneous dinner as well as a special treat for out of town friends.
Great place but you need to be a lil determined to get you table as it's very busy.
Excellent for Sunday brunch!
Dosa Fillmore's upscale Indian restaurant serves consistently high quality, wonderfully flavorable food. Service is also unobtrustrive, efficient and helpful. On this repeat visit with family, we enjoyed some of the seasonal offerings, including the pumpkin dosa.
I loved Dosa when it started on Valencia but the small space and loud noise got to me so I was thrilled to visit their second location on Fillmore. Over the years they've increased their vegetarian and vegan options. I love their brunch options. They have consistently good food, good service and it's one of my top three restaurants in the SF Bay Area.
Nate (host) Chris (bartender) & Jamison (service) were nothing short of fantastic.
So original and tasty. I really enjoyed everything
Best experience so far. The host/manager I assume helped us and was amazing. He made sure we had everything and made us feel welcome with our little baby.
This is an upscale Indian restaurant in in Fillmore. Love their booths, very comfy seating. The interior is beautiful and I love the art pieces on display. Public Parking is close-by if street parking isn't available. Quality of food is great - very flavorful and authentic, without being too spicy. They serve South Indian and North Indian food, my favorite is the egg curry with the paratha; the dosas are an excellent choice too. The sambaar they serve with it is the best I've ever tasted. Its great for big groups and is kid-friendly. Very good service as well. If you're going to visit on a weekend, you'll definitely need a reservation. Highly recommended.
The food was wonderful again. I also had the pleasure of being under the service of Jamison, again. He made me and my friends feel like special people. Our busboys (3) especially the big stocky build one (sorry I don't know his name) were also wonderful with their service and attention. I live on Alabama st across the street from the Tradesman and around the corner from many interesting places, including your other Dosa, but I brought my friends here knowing it would be a very special and exciting experience. Thank you.
