Dorset Inn Ratings and Reviews
There is no better restaurant in the southern Vermont area than The Dorset Inn. We have eaten in the area (Dorset, Manchester, Bennington, Rutland) for many years and have never had anything but wonderful food and service. On this particular night, my wife and I had liver (the only place we eat it) and our guest had the duck. Empty plates all around.
The food at th Dorset inn is excellent. From the roasted garlic bulb and melted cheese to the siracha fried chicken to the carrot and corn sides every thing on the plate was delicious. My father said that his salmon was the best he had ever had in his whole life. They have unique and creative recipes with the freshest ingredients!
I really, really want to like this place more...the location, ambience, etc. are great. But ive eaten lunch on porch, dinner in bar twice, and dinner in formal dining room once. I keep coming away an initial impression that is somewhere between ok and good...and a feeling it could be so much more (price/reviews also drive higher expectation). The details just arent there...with food and front work. Its good.. but doesnt make my top 5 in 45 min radius...could/should be #1...
We visited the Dorset Inn for our anniversary at the recommendation of a local resident..This was a weekend trip as we are from out of town .. A local resident recommended this facility.. We loved the romantic ambiance.. The food and the service were excellent ..We would gladly
return if we should visit Vermont again..
My spouse and I spent a few days in Vt. This was our first visit to the Dorest. Enjoyed every minute there. I can not recommend it enough. We certainly would return. The chef made a small change for my dinner. It was deeply appreciated. Our server was very attentive.
Have to say that I got more than I expected. My dinner was top notch- every bite- and I eat out a lot. The service was great, drinks were excellent and the wine list was remarkable for a small inn in Dorset, Vermont. I liked being around the locals in The Tavern, the less formal side of the restaurant. Rustic, warm, friendly and great lighting. I would go back in a heart beat. The prices were not as bad as I would have thought either.
We were also guests at the Inn and our stay was perfect in every way. All of the folks there were wonderful, from greetings to service to the restaurants. The menu had a nice variety of choices, all reasonably priced, and every part of the meal was scrumptious. It was -35 degrees out, but the rummed-up apple cider and apple crisp capped a wonderful meal of short ribs and cod dishes. The staff was so wonderful, each personifying the cozy and quaint (but modern!) style we're very happy to have experienced. And we stayed with our pooch! What a great weekend.
The filet was a bit over cooked for medium rare but it was tasty. The rib eye was very good.
The table we were seated at had two high back cushion chairs which had my partner sitting below normal table height. The table was also not a table for two it was a table for four. We were seated across from each other at an uncomfortable distance. Not a good seating experience. The service was very good but the experience of the table was not pleasurable.
We have dined at the Dorset Inn for both lunch and dinner in the past and have always enjoyed the experience. The dining room has a working fireplace and is nicely appointed for fine dining, while the Tavern has a rustic ambiance that is dominated by an L shaped bar.
When we arrived for dinner on 1/26/16 the hostess informed us that the main dining room was not open that evening and that we would have to have our meal in the Tavern; the main dining room menu was available, however. This was a great disappointment to us especially since we had to walk through the dining room, which was completely set up for dinner and aglow with lights, on our way to the Tavern room. The dining atmosphere that we had anticipated when we booked our reservation was out of bounds for some reason...unfortunately, the Dorset Inn did not meet our expectations last Tuesday. In the past we have always recommended the Inn to people...we're not sure that we'd do so in the future.
When we expressed our disappointment about the dining room to the hostess she indicated that our Open Table reservation said that only Tavern dining was available. This proved to be inaccurate since when we returned to our car after dinner we checked our copy of the OT reservation confirmation and there was NO mention of the Tavern room being the sole choice that evening. Had we known before we arrived that we would be relegated to the very LOUD bar room we would have gone elsewhere for dinner.
Our server, Linda, was very pleasant, the food was well prepared and enjoyable. Not sure if we would recommend the Dorset Inn in the future.
Service was slow. Front hostess was rude. Once we settled in, the food was decent enough. I would say, for the experience, that it was overpriced. I wish I had just gone to the SIlver Fork in Manchester. They have a tavern though. Looks like it is fun in there, although I didn't partake.
We were visiting a long-time friend in Southern Vermont and wanted a special place for dinner. A bit of research turn up the Dorset Inn and I had fond memories of riding my bike through the beautiful town. It was perfect, just as an inn should be. Understated elegance with a good menu well prepared. Overall, the price was quite reasonable. It will clearly be a destination for us in the future.
You cannot ask for a more pleasant welcome that at the Dorset Inn. We were an 45 minutes early for our reservation, and were still able to get a great table in our favorite room. The food is always delicious and beautifully presented, the service just right, and our new (to us anyway) server was given a heads up as to our favorite white wine! Now that really makes for a special night out!
If you are staying in the Manchester area of Vermont, be sure to dine at the Dorset Inn dining room or tavern. Chef dishes are specific for the season and daily items reflect local market finds. The classic menu holds plenty of options for whatever mood you are in. We had the Turkey Croquets, Dorset Inn Burger, Kale Salad and Hand Cut Fries. Take time to ask the server about the inn and property. We were given a history to read and a told some legends of the inn from the revolutionary war days. Arrive early enough to stop across the street and visit the amazing variety store with bakery and deli. Be sure to get some of their outstanding cookies. This town has an amazing history including it's founding, the quarry, town square, Dorset Inn and Variety Store to name a few. Spend some time and finish your day at the Dorset Inn Dining Room or Tavern.
The Dorset Inn in beautiful, tiny Dorset, Vermont has been the place to dine for generations, and it's good to report that the tradition continues. The room's decor is quintessential New England, and the service pleasant and polished. The menu offers a full range of options including seafood, pastas, steaks, calf's liver, and chicken. All are nicely done. Reservations are a must, especially during peak seasons.
