Don's Bogam BBQ & Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
Great spot. Newly renovated, very friendly staff. I came on Sunday around 5pm to celebrate my birthday and some of my party was late so the hostesses held my reservation for almost two hours while I waited for my full party to arrive. There is a section of the restaurant with normal seating (no grill in the table) and booths with grills and seats basically implanted in the floor. It was awkward to get into the seats so I wouldn't recommend wearing short skirts/cocktail dresses. We seated around 7:30ish and ordered fried shrimp dumplings and a bottle of Reisling to start. Our server was very friendly, and when he was busy we were able to ask any server in the restaurant which was really nice. Once we'd finished the dumplings we ordered short ribs and shrimp in special sauce. The ribs came out first with no marinade and were delicious. Our server recommended dipping them in this red-ish sauce and wrapping it in lettuce which was so good. Then a series of mushrooms came out, which we thought came with our meal. After about 15 minuets of waiting for shrimp we asked another server were it was and he told us only beef and mushrooms had been ordered, so we ordered the shrimp and tried to have the mushrooms removed from the bill but because we had eaten them, they wouldn't remove it. Overall the restaurant was posh, staff was extemely helpful and friendly, but I would recommend preparing i advance for the awkward seating, and knowing exactly what you want to eat so you don't end up with the wrong meal.
DB has been our go-to spot for KBBQ in the area in recent years. It still comes through with higher than average quality meat and a setting both pleasant and high energy without the chaos and boisterousness common to the competition. That said, we were disappointed with the panchan (small side dishes that accompany the main meal), which were both meager and pedestrian. Further, the service quickly went downhill and for most of the meal was notably sloppy and indifferent. (As an example, we found ourselves darting from burner to burner to tend the meat while a server stood unoccupied a few feet away passively observing us in our frenzy.) All in all, we are sufficiently disappointed to realize it is time to move on and explore the ever-evolving competition. At this price point we would expect more from DB - better meals overall and much better service. Time to bring it up a notch guys. Sigh ... most regrettable!
Seating was delayed, food came out of order. Waiters were not very good with helping us cook our items (especially the scallops which would have been boiled and not grilled without our intervention). Portions were also quite small compared to the competition.
Overall, overrated. Not worth a second trip. Maybe they were better before the accolades, but it sure ain't good now.
Terrible service experience all around. We first thought our waiter was providing bad service and was arrogant. So we switched waiters and got the same bad service.
Waiters didn't bring things we requested, instead brought whatever was convenient for them.
When complaint was made to the hostess on the way out, her response indicated that she didn't care and bad service seemed to be part of this restaurant's culture.
Astonished at how much fun we had. Delicious food (very high quality ingredients). Service paid close attention. Will most definitely return. (Note: certainly not cheap; bill for our group of 7, with 3 bottles of chablis and 1 bottle of soju and tip, came to $700.) Will most definitely return. So much fun!
Food is delicious. Extremely tasty. Service...not good at all. Took at least 15 minutes to get a drink which they only had to pour in a glass. It wasn't a specialty cocktail of any stretch. Asked for a fork and one person came back with nice silverware fork and other came back with a rinky dink plastic fork.
Bottom line, if you want even decent service, it's not the place to go to. If you want great food, it's the place to go; however, I am sure there are many other spots in the area where Korean BBQ is just as good.
Very good Korean BBQ! And the soju is delicious! It's al about the meat so don't miss the Kalbi and pork belly! And unlike many Korean BBQ restaurants, you don't leave smelling like your dinner. Ladies beware...the chairs are low into the table area so don't wear a short skimpy skirt less you want your neighbors to see your skivvies!
Always yummy & a good time, but disappointed when we asked to cancel a meat dish BEFORE they started cooking it & they denied our request. Told us "it's too late" a proceeded to BBQ in front of us 10 min later just to wrap up for home. Not good customer service !
Group of 5 old coworkers had a reunion in this restaurant. We had 5:30pm early reservation. After we were seated, we were told we had a table until 7:15pm, for next reservation. At 6:55, while some of us were still eating, they brought a check and placed it right in the middle of the table without saying any word of excuse. Since we were still eating, we didn't open the check. After 2 min, the server came back to retrieve the check and I said we hadn't got to it yet. After 3 min, the server came back and asked to pay first. I told him we were told that we had a table till 7:15, and he said the new setting should be prepared by 7:15. I felt like we were literally being kicked out. We didn't order BBQ, which was their specialty, but everyone ordered a drink, and ordered plenty of food that we paid a good amount of money.
Food and drink were all VERY DELICIOUS, but I won't come back because we were being treated like second class citizens. If you are a big group ordering BBQ, this is a good place.
Fun experience, terrific food and service. The Korean BBQ experience is a must - the grill(s) are set within the table, but your server does most of the grilling. We tried beef, chicken and shrimp and all were fantastic. Fresh, great quality and so tender. The side dishes were very different, and fun. They have a fantastic wine list too.
I've dined here many times before and usually make a reservation as the wait for walk-in can *sometimes* be too long, especially on a Friday or Saturday night.
Made a reservation for a Friday night at 6pm through OT and was called by restaurant to confirm reservation and to notify us that we would have a two-hour meal. Not the first time they've done this. Sure, I don't like it when people give me a time limit to consume my food but I've never had a problem with a small party finishing before the two hours they've allotted.
We were seated promptly and ordered a seafood pancake, two orders of the 5-beef platter and 2 orders of the samgyupsal along with some soju and beer. They grill the meat in front of you so you know the meat hasn't been sitting under a heat lamp or reheated. Wait staff was attentive and accommodating and refilled side dishes often. We were done within the two hours.
Overall, a good time and delicious food is always had here. Yes, it might be overpriced but the portions are perfect and the experience is amazing. It's probably the best Korean bbq you can find in Manhattan. For more "affordable" kbbq with the same (or better) quality, make the trip out to the Flushing area or Jersey.
