Donovan's - Phoenix Ratings and Reviews
We’ve been to Donovan’s previously and found it to be one of the best steak houses in the Valley but on this occasion it simply wasn’t up to par. The salads were average and overdressed. My steak was perfect but others at the table got a surf and turf combo and on those plates the steaks were just OK and overcooked. At $100 a plate this was really disappointing. The service pleasant but not a lot of smiles and we didn’t feel really attended to. Overall I have to say our experience was only average.
Horrible experience. Salmon that was not cooked, steak too rare, baked potato that was supposed to be salt encrusted and was not. I asked for NO pepper on steak and full of pepper. They comped the meal but the night ruined. Talked to other locals and they said they could not figure out how their ratings were so high. I guarantee Mastro's City Hall and Steak 44 are excellent. We are from Vegas & eat out every night...not good.
As years past our experience was very enjoyable. The steak as always was fantastic and you could almost cut it with a butter knife and cooked to perfection. The staff treats you extremely well. It is very pricey, so we could only afford once or twice a year but it is DEFINITELY worth it. Thanks again for making our night very special.
This was a very special birthday celebration for my husband. I wanted to find a very nice restaurant, with good steaks and sea food, romantic ambiance, and very good service. I found it here at Donovan's. Everything was perfect.
A small world phenomenon: our wait staff are friends of friends, and they are our friends from Mexico! With all of the restaurants in Phoenix, all of the tables in that one restaurant on that one evening, we meet friends of friends, who hopefully now will become OUR friends!!
We both got Sick the night we ate there...I was looking for a great lobster dinner, the picture shown on open table was NOT the lobster I received... pic had paprika & it was broiled perfectly.. WHAT I received was just a steamed lobster tail with no seasoning on it. They also forgot our Brussels sprouts? Plus side note they don’t just bring bread they make u tell them u want it?! $250 dinner without gratuity for 2 people def NOT WORTH IT!
This place has been talked up by a co-worker for about 10 years. I finally made the plunge and decided to try it. We ordered 3 filets 2 medium and 1 medium rare. 2 of the steaks had to be sent back more on the Rare + side. This is the 2nd time in my life I have ever sent a steak back. Maybe it was on off night, maybe, but for the price I won't risk going back to maybe get a steak cooked correctly. Unfortunate I really WANTED to like this place.
We went to Donovan's looking for a fine dining experience and that is exactly what we got. The food was amazing and well portioned, the service impeccable. We had 3 different people taking care of us, and we're checked on by management. Jose our server had great suggestions, Brett was very helpful, and the manager John was very kind. We will definitely be returning!
Some of the best food we've had in the Phoenix area, especially the steaks. All are USDA Prime and well marbleized (easily cut with a fork). The staff was very attentive and offered to accommodate custom changes to many dishes. I expected the "Chef's Cut" on the 3-course "Chef's Prix Fixe" to be a cheaper cut of beef, but it was a filet mignon and well worth the $52. I chose the seafood chowder for the 1st course and it was awesome. The New York cheesecake dessert (my choice for the 3rd course) was to die for. I was also impressed that all their entrees come with vegetables and a potato side, so there are no surprise "extras" to have to buy. The option to upgrade any steak to an "Oscar" is also a nice touch. Donovan's is a bit pricey, but we've paid more and gotten less not that far away. We'll definitely go back.
We loved the quiet, classy atmosphere of an old time steakhouse. Service was excellent, not intrusive in any way as reported by several other patrons. I ordered the rib eye rare but then asked for it to be cooked medium rare since rare seemed very raw and cold. Flavor of my steak couldn't have been more succulent. Baked potato and cooked fresh vegetables were included. Snap peas were especially tasty. My dinner partner ordered the halibut which he thoroughly enjoyed. We were celebrating my birthday so we were given a large creme brulee garnished with a fresh strawberry and a sprig of mint. Dinner was very expensive but OK for a special occasion or for someone on a business expense account.
Donovan's never lets you down. We've been dining there for around 20 years. We always have a drink in the bar before dinner. I was a little shocked when I saw the bill for two drinks, $25.00. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Donovan's to friends or co-workers. Very nice place!
Sadly, it was overrated. The ambiance was great! The wait staff overly solicitous and intrusive. The salads were OK. I had baked salmon. What a shame when they could have grilled or broiled it and it would have tasted so much better. The accompanying vegetables were delicious! My husband ordered the ribeye and it was stringy and tough. Surprising for a restaurant that brags about having such delicious beef. The bread was not even tempting. We used up a gift card but probably if I received another one I would not bother to return. Overall we were disappointed.
The food was spectacular as always and the service was superb. From the moment we walked in and were greeted and seated by Cheyenne we were treated royally. Our service team of Nick, Joby, Jose and Raul Sr. were attentive, but not overly so as to intrude on our Anniversary celebration. The table was strewn with live rose petals as I had mentioned that it would be our anniversary when I made the reservation. We were visited by manager, John, who checked in to see that everything was going well and we were treated to Crème Brulee for dessert by the restaurant in honor of the occasion. If it wasn't a 40 minute ride from our home, we would certainly eat here more often!!
I have been going to and sending my guests to Donovan's for many, many years. The service they provide is unparalleled to any other steakhouse I've been to. Katy, Sarah, and their whole staff are amazing. I recently took a nearly 1 year sabbatical from the Concierge world, and when I decided to take a group to dinner for my (and my other guest's) birthday, the staff treated me no different than before. They all remembered me, and took amazing care of me and my guests. Everyone had a beautiful time, Merlin, our server, was knowledgeable, patient, and kind - I wouldn't have expected anything less from the Donovan's staff. Would rate more than 5 stars if I could.
Four of us went for Restaurant week and all of us ordered off that menu. Two had the 6 oz. filet and 2 had the salmon. We each chose the Caesar salad and it was fresh with bite size croutons and not overly dressed. It was very good. We all enjoyed our entrees which were served with garlic mashed potatoes and snap peas. Everything was cooked perfectly. Two had tiramisu and two had crème brulee for dessert. Again, they were both delicious. The portions were good and the service excellent. The ambience here is just what a steak house should be.
Fine dining experience! Food, service and ambiance were exceptional. The waiter didn't look too happy when we ordered off the restaurant week menu, however. Restaurant week is still a time to shine! There is still lots of competition out there for a nice steak! I have been to Donovan's besides restaurant week and would still go back.
