Service was impeccable, including some juggling on the arrival time. Waiter and waitstaff was excellent and well timed throughout. The disappointment was the food. Not the quality, but the preparation. Steaks and salmon were uniformly overlooked. My steak, ordered rare, was medium, as were others that were ordered medium rare. Two of are party ordered salmon and it was overlooked to the point of dryness. That's just so disappointing for a prime steak house. I'm sure they'd have replaced entrees, but that's not any fun either. At their price point they should be getting it right the first time.
Super expensive but food is good. It was not the BEST steak I’ve ever had, but it was definitely good. The ambience was spectacular and our waiter was VERY attentive. It’s a great place for a special occasion.
Service was beyond excellent, making our evening truly magnificent. Augustine and Jose treated us like gold, and we enjoyed meeting them and other staff.
Food was great and cannot recommend it enough.
In my opinion, this is the premier steakhouse in Phoenix area
As always, the service was amazing and very attentive and the food was beyond delicious.
Great service, food. Had one in our party about an hour late, waiter helped us stretch drinks/apps until he got there. Very accommodating.
The restaurant was not busy at all upon arrival and we were seated at a table for four when we requested a booth. The hostess seated us at an open booth next to the table when we asked if we could sit at the booth. My 12 ounce NY strip was cooked perfectly however my wife’s halibut was severely over cooked. The chef brought a replacement halibut personally and told us to save room for desert. The new halibut was inconsistently cooked with some areas of the piece under cooked. My wife did not finish the dish. We received a complimentary creme brûlée as an apology from Joeb. Overall for $160 with Only ice water for our beverages the visit was disappointing and we are highly unlikely to revisit
We've been multiple times. Every time it's perfect! The staff is incredible as is the food. Donovan's is the whole package for sure!!
Great food and service like always.
Great place for a romantic dinner
Great and was awesome steak!
As usual the service was impeccable as were the steaks. It's the go to place for a nice dinner.
Wonderful food and service ! Robbie, Thomas(?), and Junior were a great team!!! Made my husband’s birthday celebration perfect!!!
The steak absolutely melted in my mouth.
Donovan's did not disappoint. The staff was friendly and efficient and the food was excellent with our steaks cooked absolutely perfect. It was both my birthday and my wife's and they presented us with a very nice desert compliments of the house. The only downside, and it's probably me because I'm "old and grouchy", I was surprised at all the patron's wearing jeans, t-shirts, and the guy next to use wore a hat the entire evening. This is a classy place frequented by people who don't have a clue in how to dress properly. I think Donovan's should enforce their dress code.
The service was excellent, requested that the rack of lamb be cooked medium it was brought to the table medium rare. Did not want to spend the time to return it so it was eaten as served. The menu is a bit pricey. Overall we will probably not return.
*sigh* I really tried to give this place the benefit of the doubt. It's been there a while, so it must be doing something right, right? So wrong. I find myself hard pressed to understand why anyone comes here when there's so many great steakhouses in Phoenix that know how to do it right. While the only thing they actually did do well was give us a nice table as requested, the waiter was not attentive in the least. Somehow this ended up being a 2 hour dining experience when the place wasn't busy and it was just my husband and I. Drink was okay, but martinis should be COLD. I was reluctant but tried the bacon mac and cheese as an appetizer upon recommendation. So disappointing. WHERE IS THE FLAVOR? Absolutely tasteless. I swear it left me begging for cheese, something mac and CHEESE should never do. They brought me the seafood bisque instead. Tiny little cup for $12. It had more flavor, but the seafood was indistinguishable. It should have had clams and shrimp. No clams. There was some kind of fish I couldn't identify, and something cut into squares with a seafood texture. I couldn't figure it out, and I wondered if it was imitation crab? Our meals came, and I couldn't believe we were paying $52 for what should have been 6 ounces (definitely more like 4) of filet and 2 small-ish bacon wrapped scallops. 86'd au gratin potatoes (maybe they were out of cheese entirely that night?) so I had to settle for boring smashed garlic potatoes. Everything needed salt and I am really not a put-salt-on-everything person. I didn't leave hungry, but everything was just ehhhhhh. For a $200 meal between 2 people, I would normally most definitely be bringing something home. Not from this place. Wish we had gone to Dominick's like we'd originally planned, but now I don't have to question whether this place can compete. Just, no. Oh, and I guess our waiter had decided his other tables were more important as someone else dropped off our check. No goodnight or anything. We won't be back.
Food was delicious and service was great.
Our Donavan’s experience did not live up to the hype we had been given by business colleges and friends. Initially we had great intro/service, by the time we ordered our drinks and entrees it started to slide down hill. Food took more than 30 mins to be delivered & 2 of our steaks where mis-plated. We came with the intention of celebration, we left disappointed with the service and food. Thankfully our celebration conversation carried the evening. My take is if you are going to charge the Do$ova$n$ prices, you need to step up all aspects of the experience.
Donovan's did not disappoint! Our evening was wonderful, the staff and food was great, as it has been each time we have dined at here. We always recommend to others for a perfect evening of being spoiled.
Donovan's is the quintessential fine dining restaurant in Phoenix. Anytime there is a special occasion or a memory to be made, Donovan's doesn't disappoint. For us, it was a special date night when pampering and top service were key. Merlin and the team waitstaff did all that and more. We'll be back!
Dinner was fantastic. Service was excellent. My girlsfriends steak was overdone and the management apologized and expedited a perfectly cooked steak. Overall, a fantastic experience. We will be back
steaks were tough and chewy. no dress code, people in T shirts and baseball caps sitting next to us. no longer a top place.too many excellent places in the area to return to Donovans,
great disappointment for $180.00.
This was my second time at Donovan's and I won't be back. The first time my steak was extremely over salted, everyone else's was fine but we all agreed mine had at least double if not triple the proper amount. This time it came out blue rare(asked for med rare) they then took it back and it came out medium well. Flavor was good just slightly frustrating for a higher prices steak house. The appetizer weren't good at all. I will say, we both enjoyed our salad, and the creamed spinach was great. Very good service as well. The food was a let down.
The quality of the rib-eye was horrible!
Too much service, a tad bit over the top.
The service and the food are outstanding.
Perfect steak! Perfect pork chop! Wait staff...exceptional.
We will dine there again!
Excellent service and staff was very attentive and friendly.
Amazing food and service!
Not great experience. Food came out and most of it was cold. They took it back and brought so better food out. We went to get our check and they decided to charge us for a $15 glass of wine when we ordered the nine dollar glass of wine. I said we ordered the nine dollar glass of wine and the waiter said oh no you didn’t and said you ordered this other glass wine anyways they ended up changing the check to the nine dollar glass wine. There’s no way I would ever order of $15 glass of wine when there is a nine dollar glass of wine option that is not me. Not sure why he had to challenge us that knowing they would do the right thing eventually. The correct food was average at best. Bacon wrapped scallops were just OK and my small fillet was just OK with a big piece a gristle down the middle... but I did not complain because of the cold food situation and did not want to seem like complainer!
Brent was attentive to my food allergies and remembered us from prior dinners. Our steaks were prepared exactly right and served super hot!
Great dining experience loved this old school steak house so classy.
Excellent dinner and service! The meal was pricy, but was worth it!
Honestly, went there when it first opened as was mildly underwhelmed. Recent visit was entirely different....for the better. Excellent service, outstanding cuisine, appropriately priced and--pleasantly--a back-lit menu that I could actually read with the aid of a searchlight. I will be back and you would be well served to try Donovan's if you haven't already.
Great waiter and we love this restaurant, Best food quality in AZ and we will make Donovan's our main restaurant for great Food and people.
The restaurant was somewhat noisy. Wait staff was loud when explaining things to newly seated customers. All four us ordered an 8 oz. fillet at varying temperatures. When the meal arrived, two of the fillets did not look like center cut fillets. Only one of the fillets was cook to the temperature requested. On returning the fillets, the medium rare steak came back as well done, the other ordered originally medium, but came out rare, was return medium rare. We were told that we would receive a complimentary desert for the trouble with our meal. At the end, we were presented with desert menus, with no mention of the promise complimentary desert, and then presented with the check. Not at all a pleasant experience. Will not be returning.
My wife and I have been going to Donovan's on Phoenix since they opened in 2005. It is one of our favorite restaurants. We began our Donovan's love affair at their La Jolla restaurant in the early 2000's. Typically, our visits are exceptional. But this visit missed the mark.
Beginning with a lobster tail as an appetizer was a great choice, although it took a while to arrive after ordering. At Donovan's, the steaks are supposed to be the highlight of the evening, but this time, they were not good. A disappointing $500 meal. Maybe there were kitchen issues or some other problem that we were not aware of, but this visit was not up to Donovan's standards.
You can't ask for a better meal. Excellant filet and scallops. The wine list is real good and the creme brulie unbelievable. Kudos to all
Surprised my Fiancé with something new a different and they did not disappoint! He loved everything about it!!!! 2 thumbs up
We were using our "Fine Dining Card" and had not been advised of any exclusions from the menu until we began ordering. Our waiter then had to leave our table to check with the manager what items they were going to exclude. We didn't complain about this but, we weren't happy. We had taken time to carefully decide what we wanted to eat and now, had to relook the menu. That said, I move to the meal itself. Although everything was satisfactory; for the prices, it was not extraordinary! Donovan's prices are just slightly lower than Maestro's and we find that the food at Maestro's is much superior -- and only a few bucks more.
Donovan's has an quiet atmosphere (it was Tuesday and it wasn't crowded) and it felt like an old "gentlemen's club". In fact, to be honest in comparing the two steak houses, we prefer Donovan's atmosphere to Maestro's fast and louder atmosphere.
