Donovan's - La Jolla Ratings and Reviews
Jason was our head waiter and he was great but the service as our food was GOD awful. Over 3 hours and we got there at 430 when they opened. Order two seafood platters and would NEVER recommend the North Atlantic salmon. I am catholic and follow the no meet on Friday which I usually get the Australian rack of lambs which are amazing and highly recommend but didn’t have them this time. My girlfriend and I had a movie reservation at 715 at THE LOT in LA JOLLA and were late when we were seated at Donavan’s at 430. THIS PLACE IS ALWAYS HIT OR MISS
It was a Valentine's dream dinner. We sat by the window with an ocean view and were treated like a King and his Queen. The service was outstanding. Our soup, salad and entrée was cooked to perfection. The tiramisu was a sweet way to end our meal with a nice hot cup of coffee. Loved it!
As usual, the food and service were supreme.
The ambiance, however, left a lot to be desired. The noise level was that of a frat party. We asked to be moved once which was accommodated as we were initially next to a large noisy group. The new seating area was an improvement, but there was a group in the middle of the room that was extremely loud and obnoxious. My wife was so upset that she ate less than half her meal. We could barely hear each other talk. People have no civility anymore, and we understand that Donovan’s is making a lot of money off these large groups. Consequently you are hesitant to ask them to tone it down for the benefit of your other guests. Our next task will be to find an equally nice restaurant closer to Oceanside that has a pleasant atmosphere conducive to a nice quiet dinner for two.
We enjoyed the food and location. When I made the reservation I requested a window table, which I understand is on a first come -first served basis. We were seated off to the side, not at the window but there was a window seat available. I heard other guests complaining about not being closer to the window. Just know that even if you request a window table, you're not going to get it. And in all fairness, they tell you that upfront. The filet was cooked perfectly but they could improve on the dessert. We had the tiramisu, nothing special.
My steak came out burnt. Had to wait 15 mins for someone to even check on me to tell them it was burnt. They brought a dessert for my husbands birthday without asking if we wanted it and then charged us for it. We confronted them and they stated it was an error. Will not being going back there! Overpriced, undervalued. Not a happy customer.
We had a great time, and wonderful dining experience. The meal was delicious, and dessert very sweet and tasty. The service was also friendly and top notch. We would recommend to a friend, and certainly plan on going again in the future. It was a little out of our price range, but it was worth it.
This was my husband's birthday celebration on the first day of the Torrey Pines PGA tournament. We come here once or twice every year, but this year didn't meet our expectations. We ordered ultra Michelob beer, and the waiter came back, saying they were all out because of all the golfers, hmmm, this was the first day of the tournament. He then suggested their blonde ale, we agreed, and he came back and said they were all out, seems like he should only suggest what he has in stock. The beet salad was very good, and we both got filet mignon, and split the large lobster tail. The lobster was great, but the even though the steak looked like the right shade of pink/red, it just didn't taste as good or tender as prime steak should, nor as good as the last few years. It was a special occasion, and we didn't want to make a scene and have our steak replaced while we filled up on lobster and our potatoes. We may rethink coming here next year.
We went during Restaurant Week and had a very enjoyable dinner with my parents. We were moved to a window table that was much quieter and the service by Becky and her partners was outstanding. The meat melted in your mouth and the dessert was super delicious. We will return.
We were celebrating our 19th wedding anniversary. They made us feel really special on our date. From the initial greeting, cocktails and dinner we were congratulated on our anniversary.
Dinner was excellent as well as dessert.
The atmosphere cannot be beat, low lights, the ocean view.
Highly recommended for any occasion.
We were celebrating our anniversary. We celebrated a previous anniversary when it was Azule. I had the 10oz Filet Mignon & my husband had the same with a 10oz Lobster tail. Both our meals were OUTSTANDING. I had the gruyere au gratin potatoes YUM! Recommend HIGHLY. Decadent!! Along with the gifted Creme Brûlée for our anniversary....a cherry at the top of a very nice evening. Oh Yea!! And an outstanding view!!
I cannot tell a lie! The service was exquisite! I ordered the surf and turf special and they actually remove the lobster tail table side for you! Very impressed! We went on Christmas Eve, just my husband and myself. We always celebrate the holiday on that day. First timers there! Got a window seat! It is a little pricey, but we expected that. And it was well worth it! Highly recommend this restaurant, and particularly this location!
