Donovan's - La Jolla Ratings and Reviews
Donovans continues to be one, if not The, very favorites. Most importantly, the food is divine - perfectly prepared and a pleasing menu. It is my go-to restaurant for observing special occasions. And of course the service is always very impressive. I almost always order my favorite filet mignon, but also love the lamb and the lobster. Would encourage anyone to give it a try for a most enjoyable experience.
Good meal my wife and I had. We were craving a really good steak and it was good, maybe not top top shelf but good. We shared a KC Strip loin, could have been a littel more charred on the outside for our liking. The scallops appetizer was excellent FYI. Good wine list. You do pay top dollar here but staff very attentive and overall a good evening for us!
What a wonderful place to take a date. We decided to dine outside overlooking the ocean which worked out perfectly as we were the only ones out there.
The food was very good, especially liked the bacon wrapped scallops. Our server Jason was outstanding, in all the years I have dined out he has been the best. My date and I were talking quite a bit and not in any particular hurry and Jason took care of anything we wanted. I did feel kind of bad for him since we were having such a great time we would up having a four and a half hour dinner!
Great place and highly recommended.
The meat was a little over cooked and the crab legs were small and didn’t taste fresh. The scallops didn’t taste fresh either. They offered to give us a new streak but we declined. They were kind enough to give us complimentary coffee and dessert. We dined overlooking the La Jolla cove and could hear the sea lions barking and the crashing waves provided a nice ambiance. The patio heater kept us cozy while we dined. Overall, it wasn’t a bad experience but I don’t think I would order the seafood again.
Me and my husband celebrated his birthday here and dinner was just phenomenal.
Cari was our server along with Jonathan and they were both just extremely attentive to us and very very polite.
We always decide for Donovan's for special occasions because this place never fails and is always very welcoming .
We’ve eaten here a few times and loved it every time. This was the first time we sat on the deck outside and although it was dark we sat looking out into the ocean and listen to the seals. The staff was very accommodating and moved a heater right next to us. We were the only ones outside per our request to seat outside, we never felt neglected.
Amazing service, from the time we checked in to the time we left the service was superb!
The view of La Jolla is breathtaking, so romantic.. highly recommend for date nights and special occasions. Not t forget the amazing menu choices, best steak house in San Diego period.
Great views, great food, great service. Nothing but high marks for this terrific steak/seafood La Jolla fixture with a high perch above the coastline providing awe-inspiring views. Not an inexpensive evening, but well worth it. Excellent wine list too representing many great California wines.
You cannot beat the view frim the window seating at Donovan's. Then, the service will let you know that you are in a very special place. Once the food arrives, you will know that you chose the right place for a truly memorable meal.
Our service was excellent. Prices seem to be going up as $70 is a way too expensive for a Porterhouse, as I recall it used to be in the later $50’s or maybe $60. That was very disappointing to see. Not everyone is wealthy and we still would like to enjoy Donovans however they are making it completely unaffordable for those that don’t have money to burn. Other than the price of the steak we had a great time and I love the new venue.
1. Checked in on time (actually, early). Table not ready, after 15 minutes I got up and tracked down the hostess, then I was seated immediately. 2. Not seated outside as specified in reservation. 3. Steak not served as requested. Overcooked steak and cold side orders. 4. Shaky, sweating young waiters, so unsure of what to do that it was almost comical. Summary: pretty mediocre restaurant. Perfect for tourists who will never come back.
I can't say enough great things about this place. We came to CA for 4 nights and this is the place I saved for last. Well there is something to say about saving the best for last. We were greeted by a friendly host, and then the the three people taking care of our table were exceptional. The service was excellent, the food was superb and the restaurant is beautiful. The oysters rockefeller were the best I ever had and I've been to a lot of cities. This is a wonderful restaurant and now that I'm home in PA, I'm planning my next visit, I just need to go back.
