I had a great experience. Celebrated my anniversary at Donovan's and the experience was perfect for our occasion. The staff was friendly and attentive. We had the chef’s prix fixe, a 3-course meal and enjoyed everything from the starters to the dessert. The setting was romantic for the occasion and the staff followed through with the anniversary note left during reservation. It met the expectations that I had as someone who has been to other steakhouses in the area of the same category.
Very nice setting in the heart of the Gas Light District of downtown San Diego. Our waiter Eric and all of his support staff did a superb job of taking care of us. The food was fantastic. I had the blue cheese sedge salad and my date had the spinach salad. Both were wonderful. We shared two entrees. I had the peppercorn crusted filet and my date had the salmon. Both were cooked to perfection and tasted delightful. The chef and his support staff prepared not only a delicious meal but an attractive looking one as well. Donovan's is not inexpensive, however we expected that. It not only met but exceeded our expectations. I recommend you try it out.
Had a lovely anniversary dinner. Our server Eric and his team were exceptional and made us feel welcome and very special.
Being from the Indianapolis area, i was expecting something along the lines of Saint Elmo's. This was nothing close to that. The steak was cooked properly, but bland. The calamari was just OK, nothing better than most chain restaurants. The meal was good, but not "over the top".
THE BEAUTY OF THIS PLACE, IT TRULY DOES HAVE A ROMANTIC SETTING. ME AND MY FIANCE ENJOYED OUR VISIT HERE, THE FOOD WAS TO DIE FOR...YUMMY. THE DRINKS THE BARTENDER MADE FOR US ...THEY WERE JUST PERFECT. I WOULD LOVE TO COME BACK ONE DAY SOON.
Coming from NYC, this place does not rate. The service and ambiance were nice, however the food was lackluster and pricey for what it was. We ordered the tomato and onion salad as an appetizer and it was unrecognizable from what we would normally get at the Palm Steakhouse here in NY (or at any other Palm in the country). I had the 8 oz filet which I thought was decent. It was very expensive, though, for San Diego and the creamed spinach was not good. All in all, the place was decent but not for the money. Will note, the bartender at the bar where we had a pre-dinner drink was wonderful, and worth a return trip maybe just for drinks at the bar!
Donavan's is my go-to place every time I visit San Diego. This restaurant and all of the staff are special. The care they take in ensuring a fine dining experience is exceptional. The friendliness of the staff is both comforting and welcoming. Most cities have several amazing steakhouses. This is one of the best because of the staff, the menu and the wine list.
I would recommend Donavans, Gaslamp, and the La Jolla restaurant to anyone living or visiting San Diego.
Simply amazing, again
Amazing steak and shrimp! The seafood tower was excellent.
Server spilled drinks all over my date & gave us attitude after bring out the wrong food. Had to ask multiple times for sauce for my meal.
The sommelier was rude and the service very slow. Food was very disappointing. We won't return.
Excellent food and service as always. They have an excellent new cheese platter that make a great appetizer or desert.
Great place for a date night. We went with another couple and had a great time. The filet melted in your mouth. The asparagus was flavored perfectly and the garlic mashed potatoes were amazing. For dessert we had the best creme brûlée I have ever had. Hands down, the chef knows what he’s doing. I strongly recommend checking out Donovan’s.
This is such a great spot. The service and food is top-notch, one of my favorite places to eat when visiting San Diego.
HANDS DOWN best food, best service, best experience! I highly recommend Donovan's for one of the greatest dining experience in San Diego
Salad was very good. Steak was also good. The sides were crisp and well cooked. Perhaps I should have tried the Rib Eye instead of the Filet. My customer was pleased and overall meal went well. It was quiet and dinner meeting was a success
The value for the meal was unacceptable. Overpriced for an OK steak. Very disappointed.
Excellent restaurant and the food is outstanding. Fantastic service. Sat in the bar area for full meal. Bar area was not busy (Monday night) so noise level was low. Not sure how it would be on a busy day or on the weekend. Food was so good I would go back even if the noise level is high. Very attentive staff and very friendly. Would highly recommend.
The only thing better then there service is there food. They took care of my wife and I on our anniversary like we were family!
Donovans was recommended to us by a friend who lived in San Diego. Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and service at Donovans. I had Steak and Bacon wrapped scallops and they were cooked to perfection. My wife had the Ahi Tuna entree and hers was perfect. Interior of Donovans is nicely decorated and very comfortable. The 3 servers who were assigned to us were excellent and attentive. Brandon was the lead with Jose & Jose.
Great food and Great service. We had a party of five and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food was excellent and the service never seemed rushed.
Food and service was outstanding from the server greeting me by name to the unexpected dessert for our anniversary. Great experience!
Having been to many of the best steakhouses in the US, I can say the ambiance here is one of the finest. Our server was great too. The disappointment was my rib eye steak, it was cold when served. I know I ordered it medium rare, but it was cold when brought to the table. Medium rare steaks should still be hot when served. When I mentioned it, the server took it back and reheated it. Then it definitely tasted 'reheated'. My wife had a New York and it was excellent, she also ordered hers medium rare, and it was served hot. When she tasted mine, after the "reheat", she agreed that it tasted "reheated". Quite sad. Oh, I've also been to Donovan's in Phoenix and SLC, and they were great.
Food was good steakhouse fare. Disappointed that wait staff is not properly trained and cleared the table when one guest was still eating. I was very unhappy and made it known.
Set up a reservation for 4 at 8 Pm. After 10 minutes or so we asked about our table, we were told that our table was given to another group. We were then told that it would be another hour wait unless we would be ok with a table top at the bar. We decided to take he table top, but it also was not ready until 840.
Several menu items were not available, and ultimately our meals arrive at around 10 pm. 2 hours after our reservation. The servers indicated the reason for the delay was a convention was in town. Since San Diego is a convention city, I was surprised the restaurant could not handle or at least accepted reservations they clearly were not able to manage.
Finally, once the food arrived, some of the meals were undercooked, although others were very good. The manager eventually comped the meal, but the experience was easily the worst I’ve experienced.
I come here whenever in San Diego. Always outstanding to very good. The service was outstanding as always but the quality of the Ribeye steak was not as good as previous visits. They prepared the meat correctly but lacked some flavor and more fatty than usual. I will certainly return.
Outstanding service and ambiance. The seafood tower was AMAZING. All steaks were cooked perfectly. The augrautin potatoes are a must have for the side.
Excelente comida y el servicio es estupendo.
Great service but food was average. Steak was very good but lobster tail was tough and undercooked. Expected much more for the price. Restaurant atmosphere was very nice.
If you’re looking to go all out on an expensive dinner, this is the place to do it in San Diego! As a tourist from Chicago, this steak house is up there with the best in the business!
We had never been and wanted to try. The best part it was part of Restaurant Week and close to where we stayed/ The Grand Horton
Excellent service! Great food. 1 of our 5 orders was wrong, but that was remedied right away.
Plan to again!
Had dinner with friends we haven't seen a long time so we appreciated the quiet as well as the feeling that we were not being rushed which allowed us to catch up. Meal pace and service was perfect, and it was restaurant week to top it off! Staff was attentive but not intrusive. Great meal, we will definitely be back!
The food was delicious, great service and the people were very friendly.
Lobster was small for the price. Flavor wonderful
We wanted a quick meal before going to see Hamilton at the Civic Theater. We were pleasantly surprised at how efficient our wait staff was. Ours steak and shrimp combo plates were perfectly prepared. I don't think that I have ever had such hot mashed potatoes. My crème brulee was so rich and decadent that I was unable to finish it completely. (sadly). The flavors were wonderful and the service was spotless, this included the valet service for our vehicle. Thank you for making our evening the best it could have been.
This was our first visit to the Downtown Donovan's although we have dined at other locations in the past. The location is the first floor of a building in the Gaslamp at 6th and K. It is an old style steakhouse with dark wood paneling. The only view is of the street but the interior is very nice and classic. There is no parking but there is valet. As with our times at other Donovan's, the food is excellent, particularly the steaks. Entrees come with vegetables and a choice of potatoes. I had a very good wedge salad and a smaller filet with nicely prepared vegetables and the au gratin potatoes. My wife had the Restaurant Week dinner with a Caesar salad and a small tenderloin with scampi. Initially, the service was excellent with the team assigned to our table being very attentive, quickly correcting an error in my choice of salad and ensuring that everything was going well. Later, a group of 8-10 was seated near us and that seemed to distract our server to our detriment. My wife was supposed to have a creme brulee with her meal but we were running out of time to get to the theater and, by the time we were able to get our server's attention, we simply had to ask for the check as quickly as possible. The server did ensure that we got her desert in a box before we left. We like the chain and will dine with Donovan's again.
Great food and service. Amazing location and ambience.
Table next to us had a loud mouth blabbering on his cell phone. Staff really needed to ask him to take it outside. Please be more aware. Other than that a wonderful experience. Will go back.
Donovan’s has a very classic ambiance. Great steaks and wines. We went for restaurant week. They offered four awesome entrees as a choice for $50 with salad and dessert. Donovan’s is my favorite fine steak house. I was a little disappointed that I had to get up from the table and walk back to the hostes and ask for the restaurant week menu. One hostes acted like she didn’t know there was one. Other than that, the waiter and staff were awesome as usual.
