Donovan's - San Diego Gaslamp Ratings and Reviews
The wait staff could have been more friendly and inviting. They seemed to be overwhelmed and didn’t take much time to talk and fully explain menu items as you would expect from a place of this caliber. The wine is extremely over priced as well as some other menu items. One lobster tail cost 51 dollars compared to the filet and scallops that was 52 dollars. Kind of disappointed as this was my first visit to San Diego.
The service was excellent and the food was tasty. However, billed as the best steaks in San Diego, my expectations of a Filet being fork-tender were not met. Also I had the 8oz filet with an 11oz lobster tail special and when the bill came I was surprised that the steak was $52 and the tail was a separate $80. The tail was better than the steak and there was no communication as to what the MP (market price) was. My mistake for not asking I guess.
In my opinion, did not live up to the fine dining experience. Waiter wasn't the friendliest the drinks were not great and the food was just average. We travel frequently and always visit fine dining steak house. We are used to the fine dining experience. We did like the decor and the wait staff were friendly. That is about all I can say about the positives of this restaurant. I would compare it to a Claim Jumper. Also forgot to mention, our main course took 45 minutes to come out.....never ever ever have I waited to long for an entree. Not the best experience.
A very nice restaurant. We were put in the corner for our anniversary. There were open tables (2-3) near us open the window. Make sure you request a seat that fits you and not in the corner. Felt cramped and stuffed, boxed in. Food Good, Service good (Daniel), by the time we saw the seat we had and they put a table of 8 next to us, it got cramped and be in a corner near the AC Control.. Tried to make it special but it was not good due to the seating situation. I would not return for the fact to spend over $300, for celebration or regular dining. Our view was the wall, people, and I could see the street. My husband's view was the wall and me. Thank God he loves me. This was our 2nd visit to the rest.
Disappointed. Not the Donovan’s I knew once upon a time. Overpriced, dried filet and crab. Service never refilled our wine glasses. It was a birthday and no mention of it even though I made sure they were aware. Not even a goodbye from our waiter as we walked out the door. Ruth Chris or Flamingos is your better bet. Time to let the nostalgia go.
Sometimes you just want a steak done right -- well, this is the place. The food was simply wonderful and delicious. Appetizers, wine selection, steak (perfectly cooked and server very hot), side dishes perfect. The wait staff was just right, attentive but not in your face. Sometimes it is just about doing it right!
The app listed the points associated with the time I reserved at 1,000. I was awarded 100. The Brussel sprouts were inedible with too much sauce and sweet/sugar coating. The tuna poke was also overly sweet and and dropping in sauce. The waitress did not ask if anything was wrong with the meal.
I would have thought the service and food quality would have been better given the prices
Salty! A brick of salt would have been less salty than the food. The best thing I had was the chop salad which was basically chopped iceberg lettuce. Service was amazing, super friendly and helpful staff, nice restaurant, but the food was horrific. Definitely not a $400+ meal... for 3 people.
Dinner with a friend while in vacation in San Diego. Had the filet mignonnwhixh was very tasty. My friend had the Rib Eye which was stringy and has a tendon running through it. When we told the waiter about her steak, he said "that's how a Rib Eye is cut". We are from the Midwest and know our steaks. The dinner was overpriced and one steak was bad. We were very disappointed. Especially with the way the server handled the poor cut of Rib Eye.
Normally it is excellent, the waiter was a little slow, the ribeye was a little grizzly this time, they forgot our drink order and it wasn’t very busy, the lamb chops were delicious as usual and the bread and the mushroom gravy. I will definitely go again but I like the La Jolla location better
I went on a date so i made reservation and was sat 30 min late. We were hungry and frustrated. The food is what I recommend,it's good. But seating and hosting were unprofessional and just unorganized. I spent 140.00 Saturday the 7th and I don't think my experience was worth it, I was embarrassed in front of my boyfriend. I spoke wonderful things about donovans and then we get this services. I hope the next time we come we can actually enjoy a fine restaurant.
The food was spot on but the service was mediocre. Went for our anniversary and it was as if they didn’t care or they forgot. It felt like the waiter was very snooty and we were a bother to him. The other wait staff was ok. Might give them a try again only because the food was amazing.
Amazing food and service. We were a group of 8 and were handled in the most efficient and timely fashion. Joseph and Alex were awesome. We felt like we were the only table in there and they were quite busy. Food came out exactly as ordered and temperature was perfect. We couldn't have asked for better service and food. Simply perfect.
I am basing this review on the meal we had for restaurant week. We did order appetizers too. The appetizers were very good but my friend and boyfriend got the tenderloin and shrimp scampi and they both said the shrimp was over cooked and the meat was just ok. I had the prime tenderloin meal and it too was just ok. The plates were hot but the food wasn't as hot. The potatoes were luke warm, just a huge lump of blah potatoes. Not what I would expect from a fancy steakhouse. The service was great - very attentive. Just feel that the food served is not up to par with newer style restaurants that may not be steakhouses but service great steaks. This is my second time to Donovan's (first visit was La Jolla) and I don't think I would try it for a third time. Wasn't bad, just for what you are paying, it wasn't great.
