The app listed the points associated with the time I reserved at 1,000. I was awarded 100. The Brussel sprouts were inedible with too much sauce and sweet/sugar coating. The tuna poke was also overly sweet and and dropping in sauce. The waitress did not ask if anything was wrong with the meal.
I would have thought the service and food quality would have been better given the prices
Salty! A brick of salt would have been less salty than the food. The best thing I had was the chop salad which was basically chopped iceberg lettuce. Service was amazing, super friendly and helpful staff, nice restaurant, but the food was horrific. Definitely not a $400+ meal... for 3 people.
Dinner with a friend while in vacation in San Diego. Had the filet mignonnwhixh was very tasty. My friend had the Rib Eye which was stringy and has a tendon running through it. When we told the waiter about her steak, he said "that's how a Rib Eye is cut". We are from the Midwest and know our steaks. The dinner was overpriced and one steak was bad. We were very disappointed. Especially with the way the server handled the poor cut of Rib Eye.
Normally it is excellent, the waiter was a little slow, the ribeye was a little grizzly this time, they forgot our drink order and it wasn’t very busy, the lamb chops were delicious as usual and the bread and the mushroom gravy. I will definitely go again but I like the La Jolla location better
I went on a date so i made reservation and was sat 30 min late. We were hungry and frustrated. The food is what I recommend,it's good. But seating and hosting were unprofessional and just unorganized. I spent 140.00 Saturday the 7th and I don't think my experience was worth it, I was embarrassed in front of my boyfriend. I spoke wonderful things about donovans and then we get this services. I hope the next time we come we can actually enjoy a fine restaurant.
The food was spot on but the service was mediocre. Went for our anniversary and it was as if they didn’t care or they forgot. It felt like the waiter was very snooty and we were a bother to him. The other wait staff was ok. Might give them a try again only because the food was amazing.
Amazing food and service. We were a group of 8 and were handled in the most efficient and timely fashion. Joseph and Alex were awesome. We felt like we were the only table in there and they were quite busy. Food came out exactly as ordered and temperature was perfect. We couldn't have asked for better service and food. Simply perfect.
I am basing this review on the meal we had for restaurant week. We did order appetizers too. The appetizers were very good but my friend and boyfriend got the tenderloin and shrimp scampi and they both said the shrimp was over cooked and the meat was just ok. I had the prime tenderloin meal and it too was just ok. The plates were hot but the food wasn't as hot. The potatoes were luke warm, just a huge lump of blah potatoes. Not what I would expect from a fancy steakhouse. The service was great - very attentive. Just feel that the food served is not up to par with newer style restaurants that may not be steakhouses but service great steaks. This is my second time to Donovan's (first visit was La Jolla) and I don't think I would try it for a third time. Wasn't bad, just for what you are paying, it wasn't great.
There was a little delay with the first batch of drinks arriving, but I can't fault waitstaff for that. The staff were courteous, efficient, knowledgeable, and engaging. Table service was first class.
The food was top notch, with all of our steaks cooked to perfection, regardless of selection. I had the blue cheese topping on the rib-eye, and the proportion of cheese to meat was right on the money.
The accompanying garlic mashed potatoes were heavenly.
Finally, a chef who understands that mashed potatoes are still potatoes and should have some substance to them rather than be a whipped, creamy fluff. They were elegantly seasoned, and delicious. Also the vegetables. Just right. Not just a garnish.
The appetizers were tasty, and well cooked.
Cocktails were generous, and tasty. The wine selection is excellent.
First, they do not cater to infants. No high chairs or booster seats. So be prepared to bring your own or hold them in your lap. Second, for 8 people, they only brought out one plate of bread. Then, our food took an hour and 15 minutes to come after ordering and the longest cooking item would have been medium-well filet mignon. The manager only compensated us with a free desert. They didn't even acknowledge that we were celebrating two wedding anniversaries after we mentioned it to the hostess. The meats were marginal in terms of flavor. The sides and salads were delicious. They have definitely gone downhill.
We had a party of 9 including 4 children. The staff was very friendly and took care of all of our needs for the children.They made us feel welcome. The food was absolutely delicious. This was a special family gathering and we are so glad we picked Donovan's!!!
SERVICE WAS BAD. IT TOOK MORE THAN 30 MINUTES TO GET DRINKS REFILL. WHEN OTHER FOOD ARRIVED, NO SILVERWARE AND THEY DON'T OFFER COCKTAIL NAPKINS. THE STEAK WAS LOADED WITH FAT AND VEGGIE HAS TOO MUCH OIL. ONCE I REMOVE THE FAT, THE STEAK TASTE VERY GOOD. FRENCH FRIES CAME OUT COLD. THEY DON'T OFFER FRUITS OR HEALTHY DISHES FOR DESSERT.WE WANT TO ORDER MORE DRINKS BUT DON'T WANT TO WAIT 30 MINUTES AGAIN.IF YOU WANT ROMANTIC PEACE AND QUIET, YOU NEED TO REQUEST UPSTAIR BUT LIMITED SPACE. VALET PARKING ONLY.
We were there before a Padres game on Sat evening, and were to have dinner in the bar. They didn't seem prepared for the early crowd, so service was very slow. We overheard the bartender telling the hostess to slow down seating people because he couldn't keep up. We had drinks and appetizers and would have stayed longer, but the A/C was woefully inadequate for the crowd and temperature, so we opted to have dinner at the ballpark and left. As always, the food is excellent.
