Dona Tomas Ratings and Reviews
We have been to Dona Tomas several times. Each time the food is fabulous. The staff very friendly and professional. We have also been there with family who also enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. Great local neighborhood spot. Recommend to anyone who loves authentic Mexican food.
Dona Tomas used to be a more "adult" restaurant with great food and service. The last two times we've gone (over past year), it seems to be a 20s, 30s clientele and there are a lot of children including babies around. I like kids a lot, but I prefer not "family friendly" restaurants.
Seeing a baby crawling around on another group's table did not go over well with me.
In any case, the night we last went, the waitperson was pretty bad and we complained to her several times: she took my plate without asking if I was done (I had to ask for a take home bag), never asked if my husband wanted another drink or if our dinners were OK, brought my take out bag and was ready to drop off the bill w/o offering a dessert menu, offered my husband a coffee refill but said nothing about my tea, was defensive when we brought some of these lapses to her attention. A manager who was very nice stopped by and wanted to hear what happened; we complained we also felt like we were being rushed out; she offered to comp us dessert.
The food arrived fast (like in less than 10 mins). My husband liked his steak; my carnitas plate was OK but not great. The handmade tortillas were the best thing. The carnitas was dry, beans and rice were fine, salsa ordinary. The food here used to be much more interesting with nice presentation.
Oh well, at least I knew Dona Tomas when it was really special.
I have enjoyed meals before at Dona Tomas. On this occasion, I made a disappointing selection. The salad was great. The shrimp tacos, not so much. The tortilla was thin and tasteless -- reminded me of won ton skins -- the filling was loaded with grilled onions and a few cut-up pieces of foul tasting shrimp. We should have ordered carnitas. My friends were happy with their selections.
I've been to Dona Tomas many times over the past decade and food quality seems to slip a bit each time. My family used to think this was very fresh, authentic Mexican. No more. This past visit we were in the "back shack" which is a bit removed from the the hub bub that makes for a social evening in a social setting. Three diners, three different entrees, all just "okay". No fresh food taste pop and a sneaking suspicion that they'd been recently microwaved before arriving at our table. My enchiladas were smothered in mole - way too much. None of us came close to finishing our entrees.
No plans to return.
I hadn't been to Dona Tomas for a number of years, and was delightfully surprised that it still seemed fresh and new - the food was well-prepared and delicious! I ordered a magarita that was very good - tangy but not too sweet. Just perfect, really!
Great, relaxed atmosphere!
Great food wonderful folks - we have been going here for years and we love it.
Last Friday we went for my birthday. It was a little unfortunate that the folks at the next table were very loud. Fortunately they left. This has happened at other restaurants on occasion.
Reserved a table several days ahead via OpenTable for 4 for a Friday evening dinner with friends at Dona Tomas. Arrived on time, and our group was escorted wayyyyy to the back "casita" room past the outdoor patio, to a corner table that was partially obstructed by a waitstaff station. The rest of the entire place was busy, but not definitely not full; when I objected to sitting at the obstructed corner table, I was sharply informed by the hostess that they needed the adjacent empty 4-top table and there was nothing she could do. Not 5 minutes later, other waitstaff arrived and separated that table into two 2-tops that sat empty for another hour, so clearly the hostess didn't "need the table." The casita room definitely had spare tables over the course of the evening, very quiet room. Food was tasty, adequate portion size; good cocktails. I've eaten here at least 10 times prior, both with and without making reservations, and this was the worst seating and hostess experience I've had. I hope this is not the new normal for Dona Tomas.
Very good food and service. My word to the wise has nothing to do with the restaurant but parking in front of a home in the neighborhood, or perhaps on Telegraph, would be better than on 52nd Ave. where there are no store fronts because several cars windows were broken before 8pm the other night, despite nothing obvious to steal.
A family get-together for Sunday brunch...we all went away wanting to come back here. Everything was wonderful. The food was great and ample--ny wife and I did not eat dinner that night. The service was friendly and attentive and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was superb. We ate outside and it was perfect! OOne of the best meals ever!
We were giving this place a second chance since our last visit was disappointing. It continued to disappoint. Food and service misses the mark. Everything needs serious attention and a more concerted effort to be better in food quality and service. We do not plan on going back given all the other great choices available.
I have never eaten in a restaurant that was soooo noisy, in both seating rooms . Mega beyond energetic. Needed to shout to communicate with moderate success. Maybe lunch is ok, never again dinner. Had not been there in a few years and the menu was way smaller. Pork carnitas were charred to a crisp . Disappointing since I had liked it before
No need to publish this. We were very disappointed compared to previous visits--nothing was very good, the sangria was from a bottle (in the past, rich and complex and full of fruit), the sauce on the chili rellenos a dull tomato sauce, no complexity or depth; the ceviche was smashed avocado with salmon and while hot, without meaningful flavor. We have had great food there and will probably give it another try, but it was disappointing from start to finish and we are pretty easy if the food is good.
We decided to go to this place INSPITE of the bad review it received in The Chronicle.
We were VERY happy that we ignored that review...this place is EXCELLENT.
The food was delicious and authentic. Most of my guests were Mexican so I was concerned...but they all loved it. The drinks were great and our bilingual waitress was very efficient, friendly and helpful.
This place will definitely be on our MUST GO list!!
