We've eaten in a lot of waterfront restaurants. Don's rates as one of the best for us. We really like the Kona scene - quieter than other islands, with very few people there to style and profile. Don's matches that vibe - not trying to be hip or cool, just letting the ocean speak for itself. And it does.

The food and service at Don the Beachcomber was exceptional. Our server, Margaret was helpful, extremely friendly and a lot of fun. Our food was served in a timely manner and was exactly as we ordered it. The patio seating was the best. Couldn't ask for a better experience in Paradise!!!

The ocean view from the table at this open air restaurant is fantastic. Surf crashing on black lava rocks almost within touching distance. And the sunset view was awesome. The service was slow and somewhat mediocre, but OK. The food was was also pretty good, but not what I would call highly memorable. We enjoyed our visit, and we loved the view and outdoor setting. The staff at greeting and seating and serving could be more inviting, exciting and friendly, which would up the experience here immensely.

One of the best views in Kona area but the food is very average to poor.
Go for a drink and view, but eat someplace else.

We ordered the medium size prime rib. Started out good but the center was tough and chewy. Overall service, however, was very good.

We try to eat at Don the Beachcomber when we are in the Big Island. The atmosphere can't be beat- sunset, torches, gentle waves. The food has typically been excellent as well. I had the ahi furitake and it was delicious. My husband had the seafood mac and cheese which was also delightful. Service was sub-par. I don't know if our waiter had too many tables or not enough training but almost everything we ordered we had to ask for. We had to ask for drinks each time we wanted one and they were slow coming. The server brought us salads two times and didn't remember he had just cleared our salad plates. He was pleasant enough but everything seemed jumbled and disorganized. It isn't a deal breaker and we will go back.

The setting for this place is amazing. We enjoyed the sunset there and the crashing waves below us. The mood was pretty mediocre and I would not recommend this place for the food. Cocktails were nice and yes they do have a happy hour. Thursday nights they have live music too

We had Valentines Day dinner. Our table was outside under the overhang. There was extremely high surf which was a spectacular backdrop for a delicious wedge salad, prime rib and kona coffee ice cream dinner. Attentive, friendly service at a very fair price. Everything, including the red zin by the glass was perfect. This was a six star meal! (And were pretty fussy foodies!!)
