Don Taco Ratings and Reviews
It was Valentine’s Day so I brought my fiancé there for a solid taco meal and the ambiance. We were one of the first couples to be sat upstairs and were sat next to a group table that was empty. Little did we know that the group that was coming in would be hovering over our table shouting back and forth at each other. Given the tight seating - this ruined the ambiance and we ended up leaving earlier than we planned.
I went here with my gal pals for my birthday. I had a discount, which was great. Also enjoyed the $5 margaritas (yum), a shroom taco, a mahi taco, and the empanadas (beef/chicken). All delish. Had good ice cream with a candle for dessert. Everyone had a good time. I love the table upstairs by the window :) We even got to watch the olympics too! Friends all seemed to enjoy their meals too.
We came all the way from Reston for the Fried Avocado taco and it did not disappoint. It was delicious. The tequila drinks were awesome too. My mahi taco was not that interesting and very fishy tasting, but the Avo taco was the best and worth the drive! The guac was also great. Loads of seating with the upstairs.
Tried this place out for a friend's birthday and I wish I lived closer to eat there more often! Such good food and service. My favorite is the queso (to die for!) and the flounder fish tacos! Also, best margarita I've ever had! Will definitely be coming back next time I'm in town!
It was so noisy in the dining room (and at the entrance to the bathroom and kitchen, which was next to our table) we could barely hear ourselves talk. We never saw our original waiter after he came by for our drink order, and had a hard time flagging one down to ask questions about the menu as they came in and out of the kitchen. Then they took away the brunch menu (telling us brunch was over). After mentioning that there was little if any alcohol in our frozen margaritas, a very nice manager came by to speak to us, and to explain the process.
If you feel like going to a frat house, then this is the place for you. Staff is immature and food isn't that great. So many better options in old town... highlight of the evening was being treated poorly because we didn't get drinks. Again, I'm sorry I'm not in a frat and actually happened to be out with a recovering alcoholic, so no bartender, for the 5th time I don't think we need some shots...
We have been to Don Taco several times but this time was just horrible. The salsa they brought us was a thin liquid. No other way to describe it. We were told 'that's how how it is'. But having eaten there before we know it's now. 'Surf & Turf' taco was chuck roast and fried shrimp. Not steak as advertised. Overall everything was just bad!
Finally a brunch place that is affordable in the DMV! Really nice spot for Happy Hour, brunch, you name it. This most recent visit, I met my friend for brunch and enjoyed the larger plates of breakfast options since usually they offer only small plates. The portions were perfect and the price was under $10! The best deal of all was the $2 Mimosas or the $4 Bloody Mary's- and they were good! No skimping on quality or alcohol here! The small guacamole app was tasty and large portion even though bit was a small- so another good deal- do think there need to be some more heat and salt added- but otherwise good. Everyone was friendly and accommodating but after awhile, out waitress trailed off and we waited awhile to track her down for our check- before that she was attentive enough. Only downfall is the booth seats!! The restaurant is not that old and already the material from the booth seats are severely cracked and uncomfortable! When you are wearing shorts or a skirt- the cracking of the seats will scratch and irritate your legs, plus it's just a horrible sight when you are coming in and led to sit down there. Hopefully, they are on their way to replacing soon! Still overall, nice experience and I'll still return - crappy seats and all!
The food and service were excellent! They offered good, thoughtful vegetarian options, which is especially commendable given their short menu. The space is fairly small (which is common in Old Town) and we had a large group, so the servers moved us upstairs, which was otherwise empty. I was very happy to have a quiet space for us to chat.
Quaint place. Food is great, drinks are great. A Little dark ( in upstairs area) ( for reading menu card etc.) Also, be reminded, it is a TAPAS bar, mostly small bites, taco's, chips, salsa etc. Some of the menu items are plentiful ( nacho's quesadillas) So if you are hungry order those items or just several tacos. Overall it was a great place service was fantastic.
We have a child with a food allergy, and the manager (Carlos) was wonderfully attentive and knowledgeable. Super friendly, super helpful, and the tacos were DELICIOUS!!!!! Thank you, Don Taco!
(For those with food allergies – it always helps to make a reservation ahead of time, noting your allergies in the comments section. We also try to call the restaurant the morning of our reservation during "off-peak" hours to confirm that they are willing and able to accommodate food allergies).
We happened across this restaurant on Yelp pretty randomly and thought we would check it out because who doesn't like tacos. We were pleasantly surprised to say the least. The place decor was great, the service was quick, the tacos were amazing (reasonably prices and ability to order just one taco at a time makes for being able to taste lots of different things). We ended up ordering off both the brunch and normal menus. The grilled cheese on the brunch menu was absolutely above and beyond. Seriously so yummy. I'm a vegetarian and they were nice about taking the bacon off the sandwich. There are also a few vegetarian tacos. I tried all of them and they were pretty good. All and all would recommend to a friend.
I'm a taco nut. I travel a lot and eat tacos wherever I go, getting a sense of where the best are to be found. (Encinitas, CA, if you were wondering.)
My name is Don and so I had to try the tacos at Don Taco on Alexandria, VA. (I collect taco shop tees, so it was a must-have.) They are what I would call "non-traditional" (NT) tacos in that they are more "foodie" style tacos, with a wide variety like Lamb Chimichurri and Mexican Spare Rib. They had traditional tacos, but I opted for the funky ones.
I have to say, these were the best NT tacos I've probably ever had. The price was right at $3.75 each, and three tacos was just right. I had the two tacos mentioned above, as well as the pomegranate steak tacos. All three were really nicely done. My wife had the special (salmon) as well as a portobello taco and a shrimp taco. She loved all three.
Wide variety, good prices, great drinks, accommodating bartender (my wife had special requests) and great, attentive staff. This taco spot barely edges out Haggos tacos in Encinitas as my fave NT taco shop.
We LOVED the tacos! We got 7 different kinds of street tacos and they were the best we've ever had. The food was very creative and unique and we will be going back there the next time we're in DC! The service was amazing, our waiter was really personable and outgoing! Last but not least the margaritas are a must try here. They are among the best I have ever had!
