We ordered the whole fish and it was so gooood! The only drawback was we asked for a second serving of sauce, and the second batch was incredibly salty. Potatoes and sticky buns were also phenomenal. Great spot for a date or family dinner! Lots of trendy folks, fairly priced too :)

The restaurant looked a bit like a hip diner, lots of tile, cool and modern. By the time we left (after a 7pm reservation) there was a line out the door. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgable, and attentive, but had too many tables and we had to wait a bit too long to order drinks, which took a while and were not great. The lemongrass was too strong in their take on a gin and tonic, and the mezcal-based cocktail was over the top with smoke and spice. However, the food was outstanding - standouts include the scallop carpaccio, the mussels, and the short rib curry. Everything was fresh and flavorful without being salty (a common downfall in asian cuisine). I wanted to drink the mussel broth. Delicious! Can't wait to go back.

Doi Moi is a great setting with friendly service and often terrific food. My fish dis was a bit bland but other dishes served were quite good. Noise was a bit of an issue with the packed Saturday night crowd. Tough to converse with people at my own table. Other times might be less crazy?

Overall, Doi Moi was excellent!

The Basil Fried Rice, Marinated Beef Jerky, and Green Papaya Salad are all musts. The Cambodian Corn was one of the best things I've eaten in a long, long time and was such a fun, pleasant surprise. Additionally, the Sauteed Okra, Lemongrass Pork, Samosas, and Crispy Whole Fried Snapper were all delightful. For dessert, we absolutely loved the Doi Nut, which was a really clever synthesis of Vietnamese and Italian cuisines.

Lots of other things on the menu looked wonderful, and we're looking forward to coming back and trying them.

The drinks were also lovely, so I'd definitely recommend having something from the cocktail menu. There are also some really nice beers and wines, if that's more your speed.

The service was warm, generous, and attentive and the atmosphere was lively without being too loud to carry on a conversation with one's fellow diners. The restaurant is bright, open, and airy with really tasteful decor.

We can't recommend Doi Moi enough and are looking forward to coming back!

First time diners and it definitely won’t be the last. We were seating at the counter facing cooking area - at first not enthused but ended up being fantastic to see the chefs and staff working beautifully together to make culinary masterpieces. Our waiter, Charles, was attentive, gave informative descriptions about the dishes and patient with our questions. Eric, the su chef, was delightful in encouraging us to try certain signature appetizer dishes like the Crispy Pig Ears (AMAZING!), and Sassate Duck Heart Skewers (surprisingly MOUTH-WATERING!). Having a hard time deciding which dish we should each get, we settled on Crispy Whole Fried Snapper and Rohan Duck Leg Khao Soi. Both were sublime!! The spices and nuances of flavors kept playing in my mind long after dinner was done. The grand finale was Khao Neeo Mamuang, their signature dessert. Honestly, we were planning to get ice cream afterwards but Eric said it was a “can’t miss” traditional dish with a twist and he was exactly right! It was lightly sweetened sticky rice with added pea flower giving the it a distinctly blue color creatively contrasting against the orange-yellow mango slices. WOW, WOW, WOW! We’ll be back again!

The snapper with dipping sauce was bland and conventional

The first 2 items delivered were different from our order. We ordered calamari and were given duck hearts. They told us to keep the hearts which had little flavor and an odd exterior. When they delivered the calamari it was nearly flavorless and undercooked.

Overall the food was underwhelming. There was no attempt to apologize about the incorrect food.

Based on the food and service We would not return

I always love the food at Doi Moi and tonight was no different. Food was great. The service was not as good as it has been in the past. The bus boy was more attentive than our actual waiter. He rarely checked on us and seemed annoyed with any questions we asked. He didn't ask what spicy level we wanted and a couple of the dishes were quite spicy (I love spicy food). We just wanted a sauce and it took a long time to get him to suggest a sauce for the dish and even longer to actually get it. I would go back just for the frozen drink and the corn. Due to the high price, we only ever come here for special occasions and generally it is totally worth it. Hoping the service is better next time as it has been in the past. Maybe we would have better service if we sat outside but it has been a very hot and humid DC summer per the usual this time of year.

The food, for the most part, was delicious. Unfortunately what gives this restaurant a poor rating is their service. I made a reservation on OpenTable for 7 and I called the restaurant at 6:50 to inform them I’d be about 10 minutes late. They couldn’t find my reservation anywhere so I had to make a new one on the spot. Luckily there was no wait, but if there was I would’ve been pretty upset.

To make things more annoying, on the OpenTable reservation I specified that my boyfriend and I were celebrating our anniversary. I asked if they could do something special. Since the opentable reservation wasn’t showing up, I went out of my way to ask BOTH the host and my waitress if they could do something special. They both said they would, but at the end of the night we got nothing. Very sad, as I was hoping to surprise my boyfriend with a little something.

To be fair, we were not aware of the parade prior to making reservation and planning trip into the city. Absolutely the worst coffee ever, served cold and sour, that was our last impression.

Great and imaginative food. Just don’t expect your food to arrive such that you party can eat together, unless you are willing to eat it cold. And lost importantly, go to the bathroom before you arrive. It has been a long time since I was in a bathroom as disgusting as Doi Moi — I’ve used cleaner public bus station bathrooms!

So, I had high expectations for this place given that its sister store is estadio (and my all time favorite dining spot in DC), but doi moi significantly missed the mark on several occasions. First, some of the dishes (e.g., Chinese broccoli and samosa) were lacking flavor. Second, the spice point for the food—even without a spice point indicator on the menu—is extremely high! I had to stop eating both the green mango salad and basil fried rice (even after ordering it MILD) because of the spice levels. My dinner partner—who likes spicy foods—even commented on the spice point on both of these dishes. Dessert was also lackluster. We ordered the spice/coffee cake and a derivation of banana foster’s. Both desserts arrived at the table PIPING hot (temperature), and there was at least a 3 minute wait after the introductory bite for the both of them to cool down. The spice cake was flavorful, but VERY dry in texture; I suspect this is why it arrived hot—to attempt to create a moist cake with a very dry recipe. And lastly, the service was very mediocre. I rarely saw the server taking care of our table, and when I did, we were already finished with our food/water, and awaiting to order more food/refills. If you want Asian-inspired cuisine, I highly recommend that you seek out individual dining experiences that narrow their focus to present cuisine that is representative of an Asian country (i.e., Purple Patch). doi moi attempts to infuse many countries’ cuisine into one, but the menu crafters were overly ambitious in their endeavors and this leaves much to be desired. I’ll not return to doi moi for a dining experience.

So sorry to hear that you were disappointed in your experience with us. We do our best to guide our guests through the menu [spice level, etc.] but of course sometimes we miss the mark. If you are interested in returning to give us a another try, we would definitely recommend our Sauteed Okra and Crab Fried Rice [a new menu item for summer!] Are you willing to privately provide your email address so we can reach out directly? We would love another chance to show you what doi moi is all about!

Doi Moi is one of my favorite restaurants in DC. However, I was very disappointed when I dined there this weekend - I told my friends I specifically wanted to go there on my birthday to have my favorite dish: the brussels sprouts. When there, we learned they were out of this dish (in addition to quite a few others), and when I expressed my disappointment that I chose this place for my birthday for that dish, the waitress didn't seem to care which seemed really odd and off-putting to me. Other friends want me to go with them to DM next week, but honestly if there is this issue again, that will really change my perception of this place...

Doi Moi
Responded on May 24, 2019

Madeline, we are so thrilled that you chose to celebrate your birthday with us, and so sorry for disappointing you on this special day. Unfortunately, brussel sprout season has ended, and we are unwilling to serve old sprouts that are shipped across country. We would love to have you back to try the summer Cambodian Corn on the Cob, and we hope you can wait patiently [along with our staff!] for Brussels to come back in the fall!
