Based on the iconic 1900s oyster house style, Doc Magrogan's Oyster House in West Chester, PA emphasizes only the freshest seafood while also offering a huge array of handcrafted beer and artisan cocktails.
When dining at Doc Magrogan's Oyster House you can choose from the lunch or dinner menus as well as an enormous drinks menu. There is even a weekend brunch to enjoy as well. A meal can include one of the fresh salads or homemade soups, a small plate such as the lobster mac and cheese or the Chesapeake cheese fries. Dinners include the catch of the day, but Doc Magrogan's Oyster House also serves up plenty of poultry, meat and vegetarian dishes.
Sadly this was our last meal as the restaurant is now closed.
We have had 10 years of happy experiences at this restaurant and want to thank the staff (esp Katrina) for providing us with the best possible service even though the restaurant was two days away from closing.
So sorry to hear Doc's closed on April 30 - will miss it
We've been dining here since it opened. Very disappointed its closing, as other locations aren't convenient. Where will I get $1 oysters??
Sad to see this West Chester establishment closing. I will miss Monday night buck a shucks.
This ever popular restaurant is shutting down and moving to the Jersey Shore probably driven out by the high rents rather than lack of patron support. Always an excellent oyster bar with a good selection of draft beers (none this closing week). Entrees are mixed with nothing outstanding but I would recommend the Sesame Ahi Tuna Tacos over fish n' chips where they do not have it quite right. Service was professional and unobtrusive (rare) but our waitress this evening was not like some of the oyster connoisseurs we have encountered there in the past. Sea Isle is too far to drive after work. This place will be missed.
review is of questionable value since they are closing in a week or so.
there was no sign of any issues though. food was great, service is excellent. going to miss the place.
Poor beer selection... Getting ready to close. Food satisfactory
What stood out? The 35 minute wait for a table past our reservation time, the broken draft system, the lack of any craft beer, the extremely loud group who was fighting to see who could yell louder, the cool, watered down crab soup or the cold seafood on my salad. Oh, and the wait staff basically ignoring us so they could tend to the large, loud group. I know a tip from a party of 20 is bigger than a party of two, but our wait for things was absurd. Yeah, all that stood out.
Took 30 minutes to get drinks. Took 90 minutes to get dinner. Had a reservation but got seated 20 minutes late, which I can understand. Found out 20 minutes before arriving that they were closing...seems like they stopped caring as soon as the news broke.
Wow, just so awful. Some food was cold, others were obviously under lamps and far too hot to eat peal and eat shrimp for 15 minutes.
Food was nothing special, peel-and-eat shrimp didn't taste like anything. Overall very disappointed and won't be going back to any location, ever.
Very good place overall for seafood
The oysters and fish tacos were delicious . Service was excellent. We can't wait to go back.
Good happy hour prices on beer.
Such tacos were ok, just too plain.
Lobster bisque too salty.
Disappointed. This is a seafood place, and all the seafood dishes were undercooked. The only decent part of the meal was the fries.
We were seated immediately for our 6:30 reservation. Our waiter was friendly and explained options on our menu, however the one thing I hate in any restaurant is when the wait staff immediately asks you for your drink order before you've even had a chance to look at the menu. That may be fine if you have a "usual" you always prefer, but I wanted to try a flight or beer and needed time to look over the choices from literally dozens of beers. Once we got that squared away, our waiter was very good and everything else went smoothly. Our salads were a good size, and our entree choices (different fish dishes) were all good. We were three people and wanted to talk quietly but that became impossible once a party of 10 was seated right next to us. The noise level was high (until they started eating). I've noticed this before in this restaurant. They could definitely use some sound absorbing re-design. Overall, though, it was an enjoyable meal, food-wise.
Love this place. Must visit if you love oysters. Great selection.
Have stopped in often. Always enjoy the lively atmosphere and the great food.
It has always been a positive experience.
Great seafood and oysters and the service was better than I have had at most places in West Chester. My husband and I will definitely be returning soon!
The whole time I was at Docs, I kept thinking "there's something missing here." The food is good. The crab dip was phenom. It's so close to being a cool venue, but it's a little drafty and can get loud when there's big parties. I think it's a fun time for getting happy hour drinks or knocking back some oysters. But I would look elsewhere to get a bite to eat for dinner, unless you have a big group.
Due to the poor quality of their signature dishes and the escalated prices, I wil, not be retuning. Not to mention that our server was distracted and attentive to our requests.
This was a great place. Everything about it was outstanding, food, ambiance, staff and food choices.
Very good food and service is excellent.
We live in France, are here visiting family and house hunting. Dropped by for lunch last Sunday, had a fabulous experience: Delightful host, great waitress, wonderful setting, a delicious assortment of oysters, Bloody Mary's, fine white wines and Cioppino, always a favorite of mine. We will definitely be back!
Great Oyster Selection.
Service was a bit slow and chaotic. Initially the wrong order was brought to our table.
Overall, however, we will return.
Visited my daughter at West Chester and invited friends for oysters and dinner. Great drinks, fresh oysters and supper food made the visit memorable. We will be back again and again.
I really wanted this to be a great spot. It' easy to get to and park. The decor is attractive but the service was lackluster and the portion sizes were small. The oysters were cold and tasty and I enjoyed them. I just felt for the price the food was not remarkable.
Love the look the place. Service was good...food was okay...drinks great...key lime shooter, yum!
Doc's created a romantic and intimate dining experience. The food was excellent and the service was among some of the best in West Chester. I would definitely return for a late-night dinner.
We were seated next to a closet door that was drafty on the coldest night of the year. Asked waitress if there was something we could lean against it and she said she'd find the key to lock it but she never did. We ended up pulling a chair over to hold it closed. Waitress also did not confirm whether my boyfriend wanted the same drink for a second round and ended up bringing him something he didn't want. I would think wait staff would be more attentive on Valentine's Day weekend.
We have been to Doc Magrogan's before and decided to return. Our meal was a mixed bag. Our appetizers, Peel & Eat Shrimp and Seafood Bisque, were very good. As for the main course, the Asian Chicken Salad was plentiful, but the dressing far too salty. The combination seafood platter was very good, but for the price, there should have been a larger portion. Our server, Katrina, was excellent. Overall, it had highs and mid-points, so we'd give it a B or B- overall (since you really want the main courses to be high point of the meal, not the appetizers).
It was the night before the Superbowl, but still. We had a reservation but waited a half hour for a table. The place was cold and loud. The "bowl" of chowder was smaller than some cups served in other places. We both had the Ahi tuna which was cold (not suppose to be, I think) and very undercooked. Our two pieces were so different in size, thickness, etc. you'd think they were from different restaurants. We really use to like coming here a lot but we don't understand what's happened lately. Too bad, not many alternatives for seafood in the area. We'll give it a rest and try again in a few months.
We are regular customers and this is the first time I've been disappointed. The fish I ordered was the smallest portion I've ever been served as an entree. I actually checked to see if I had accidentally ordered an appetizer, but no, I was charged a full entree price. Went to get a snack afterwards.
Service was slow, waited 45 minutes for cold food. A co-worker went the next evening for dinner and experienced the same type of service and cold food.
Great food and great company made for a great dinner. Service was a little slow and we did have an issue was the taste of one beer which they corrected. Overall, highly recommend.
California fish tacos were delicious with mahi mahi, cabbage and avocado. We also had mussels, oysters on the half shell, calamari and seafood salad. Calamari was tender and lightly battered. All of our food was perfectly cooked. Our waiter was attentive.
We mainly went here so my in-laws could have some raw oysters. Our meals were delicious.
I ordered the pan-seared scallops and they didn't come out as they should - no sear and the texture was off, as if the pan wasn't hot enough for a sear. I sent them back and ordered tuna tacos as a substitute. Our waitress offered the lunch size (2) or dinner size (3). I went with the smaller portion but was charged for the dinner size instead. My wife ordered a side of corn with her entree, which came out 10 minutes after her entree was served.
Just can not get a bad meal there. Service is always outstanding as well.
Came in on new year's night and was extremely quiet for a Friday. Might have been only one or two other tables in the entire restaurant so was a nice and quiet night for dinner. Service was excellent as well.
The server was very nice. She was attentive and had a nice smile on her face.
I have visited Doc Magrogans many times, and have lived in West Chester many years. Every time I have come in the past I've been treated with respect. However, my past experience was terrible. My friends and I are all 21-22 years of age and go to a prestigious university, and therefore are respectable people that use manners when speaking to ANYONE. I grew up in WC, and when my friends suggested dinner in town I immediately suggested Docs because in the past I've enjoyed it so much. Our waiter treated us like children, bringing 2 wine glasses instead of 3 after checking 3 IDs harder then I have ever seen -- and I word at a bar. Upon going to the bar, I saw that it had multiple glasses, and I had to ask for one for myself in order to get one. He ignored many requests for things that we needed, such as water and bread, and we became frustrated. The results were a cruel tip, however we believe that multiple servers, as well as the restaurant itself, put on a terrible performance.
