Based on the iconic 1900s oyster house style, Doc Magrogan's Oyster House in West Chester, PA emphasizes only the freshest seafood while also offering a huge array of handcrafted beer and artisan cocktails.
When dining at Doc Magrogan's Oyster House you can choose from the lunch or dinner menus as well as an enormous drinks menu. There is even a weekend brunch to enjoy as well. A meal can include one of the fresh salads or homemade soups, a small plate such as the lobster mac and cheese or the Chesapeake cheese fries. Dinners include the catch of the day, but Doc Magrogan's Oyster House also serves up plenty of poultry, meat and vegetarian dishes.
There are many better options in town. I had the salmon and crab hash, which was not bad, but there was barely any crab in the dish. Wife had the northern pot dinner, which was ok, only 2 crab legs and lots of potatoes. We've been here before and the food was about the same. Ok. Not one of my top picks in WC.
We sat outside, which was nice, but quite loud due to the seating area being right next to a busy street.
The service was good up until we got our food. After that, our server did not return to see how our food was. And the food is where the issue was. My shrimp was quite over cooked, and the corn on the cob I received was only half peeled. Additionally, some salt and pepper would have been nice, but since the server never returned, I had to go without. My wife's meal was okay. It didn't appear to be what she ordered, but again no server to ask.
Doc's food is fresh and perfectly prepared. Our server, Elle, was the BEST and all the staff is attentive, yet not in the way at all. The atmosphere when we went, Sunday early dinner in late July 2015, was quiet and relaxed.
Have dined here a few times for dinner but never for brunch. Menu had great variety for everyone and quality was fantastic. Service was wonderful as well. We will definitely be back!
my wife and I visited doc's for the first time. we really enjoy oysters and were looking forward to trying out the selections. I couldn't believe it when there were 13 to choose from. Felt like I was in oyster paradise.
This was our second time at Doc's . First time we went as a couple and the next time we brought our young adult daughter who was visiting from DC. Once again it seemed to hot to sit outside, although I'd like to try that when it gets a bit cooler. So we sat inside, in the back room. There were lots of people but the tables are spaced out nicely so you don't feel cramped.
We shared steamed shrimp and lump crab as appetizers. My daughter tried the new-on-the-menu steam pots and loved hers! It took her forever to get through all the delicious crab legs! She even shared a bit with us. I got the grilled seafood combo. This time the salmon was not quite as big, but certainly enough for anyone considering the plate also included shrimp and scallops. My husband enjoyed his crab cakes.
My daughter enjoyed several glasses of wine, but at $11.00 per glass it gets a bit expensive. My husband had cider beer. We did not get dessert because we were way too full.
All in all, it was a really fun experience and we will certainly go back. Our waiter was super efficient at first, but then sort of disappeared. We had to wait a bit for the bill at the end until he surfaced, but we were enjoying ourselves so it was fine.
Usually I love dining here but this occasion was dreadful. We were seating 10 minutes after our reservation when we could clearly see available tables. Once seated we had to wait to be given menus. Then when we got food menus we were not given the Oyster menu, waited for that. Drinks took forever. We heard the specials, ordered one, only to find out that it was unavailable. Ordered a regular menu item to replace it and then were later told that was out too - server said "yea we're always out of those" after he had taken the order 5 minutes before. If you're always out why did you expect it to be in today? Finally I went to use the ladies room after our meal and neither automatic soap dispenser was working. I hope Docs addresses this soon. I used to love this place but this experience and my last have been sorely lacking.
We had a very good meal. But the menu listed a "Fresh Catch". We asked our waiter about it and he said there wasn't one that night. No problem. But later after we ordered we happened to hear a waitress at another table offering that table 6 or so specials. Our waiter hadn't mentioned ANY specials to us. I would have expected when we inquired about the Fresh Catch earlier it might have occurred to him to tell us about the specials but he didn't. It's not good service to expect a customer to ask about specials.
We have been to Doc's on three occasions for brunch. Each time has been been most enjoyable. The brunch menu is short and focused. The dishes are all interesting and the pancakes as light as souffles. Worth a visit!
Had the lobster mac and cheese, not very good. We arrived at 6:30 and asked the hostess about the happy hour appetizers and drinks but were charged full price for what we ordered. We did not ask for the happy hour menu which must be different or have a limited selection. Our waitress did not let us know there is a separate menu which must be requested since they did not offer it. We also had the seared Ahi tuna appetizer which was only ok. My husband ordered the crab cakes which he has had before and they were just not very good that evening. Crab did not taste fresh at all. We have eaten at Docs on many other occasions and this seemed to be an "off" night for our food choices.
a group of friends & i went to Doc's for my friend's birthday. Our entire night was phenomenal. Upon sitting down, Doc's had a card on the table wishing my friend a happy birthday and gave her a piece of cheesecake on the house. It was refreshing to see that some restaurants do try and make your entire dining experience personal and as best as it can be. We had a lovely server/bartender who attended to our every need. The food was amazing and the drinks were strong! We were put in their upstairs seating area which was more intimate than being downstairs (definitely a plus!). My friends absolutely loved dining here and we will be back soon! Thanks again!
I live outside of West Chester so I don't make it into town often, I tried Doc's for the first time and it was wonderful. Best server I have had in years and the atmosphere was warm and friendly. This will definitely be my go to spot when i visit.
Except for the fact that the hostess could not find our reservation even with a copy I had printed out, we found the experience and food to be excellent.
We enjoyed a great date night dinner here. My husband loved the oysters, I loved the lobster tacos.
Tried because it was rated in top 5 in Philadelphia. Drinks were short poured. Oysters were good. Rest of dinner was terrible. Scallops were prepared ok, but I have had bigger, better pan seared scallops in Columbus,OH. Crab cakes were very short on crab, and very long on dough, Almost inedible. Crab risotto balls also seemed to have no crab content. Really disappointing. Even more disappointing was the size of the bill for the quality of food delivered. Server was competent and attentive. However, never again.
We have eaten at DocMagrons many times and always like it very much.
But this visit, I had to get up from my table to find my waitress to get more salad dressing, and the tomatoes were not very good looking on my salad, I did not eat them.
The potatoes that came with my dinner were burnt, asked for a new batch and they were only marginally better.
My grilled shrimp was very dry.
Nice oyster selection! Great service and menu. The mahi mahi was fresh as cooked perfectly. They offer a lot of happy hour specials throughout the week too.
We have been to Doc's many times, and this was our worst experience. We both ordered the steamer pots, and the amount of food in there was pitiful. Mussels are the cheapest shellfish you can buy, and there were only 8, along with 5 clams. Two of my mussels did not open, so I asked the server if I could get more, and she asked me to give her the ones that did not open. As if the chef would not believe me!!!! That was outrageous. My husband had two clam shells that were empty, so he only had 3 clams total. The food was cold, also, and the crab legs were definitely old. You could not even crack them because the shells were so soft and it did not taste fresh. There were 3 small pieces of potato in there which had absolutely no spices on them -- just boiled potatoes. There was a piece of corn that was about 1/3 of an ear. Couldn't you at least give a whole ear of corn?? There was not enough butter and that was cold as well. I usually don't finish my meals, but I was still hungry after this one. I felt as if they were trying to get rid of all the old fish they had. The server never came back to ask how everything was. I have read reviews of other diners who had similar experiences. This restaurant will not be around very long if they do not improve the food quality and the service. We will not be back. There are so many choices of restaurants that we don't need to even give them another chance. Disappointing at best.
Good food but the service was slower than usual. No shrimp for shrimp cocktail - at an Oyster House?
Oyster house OK you would think they would know how to serve them half were not cut free, wife had mussels for appetizer good , but you think they would remove the bowl with the empty shells, wrong on table through the entire diner. Diner crab cake with and apple slaw may have been good if served hot , sent it back came out warm, I had sirloin with crab, git the sirloin with cluster of crab legs, did not want to work for my diner. Ha to ask for a cracker to eat the crab. Not a happy dinner.
Very enjoyable overall experience!
just don.t park illegally or you'll be towed!
Food was great and reasonably priced for the area. Seafood was fresh and cooked to perfection. Waitress was very attentive and new the menu well.
we had oysters; good
sweet p & crab hash....too little crab to have it in title; lots of onions green & red peppers; need more crab
coconut fried shrimp---excellent; have had them at other restaurants; hands down Doc's the best.
Lobster mac & cheese--not enough lobster in it..
classic Lobster roll---excellent; fresh, plenty of lobster,
I took my boyfriend to Doc Magrogan's Oyster House for his birthday last May. When I made the reservation, I requested a special spot, if available and we were treated to a great outdoor seat and complimentary dessert. The oysters were delicious as well as our meals. Our server was attentive and treated us well. We will go back next time we are in the area!
I went to Doc Magrograns for my boyfriends birthday, and I could not be happier about my dining choice. The service was phenomenal and they went out of their way to make is comfortable. The manager EVEN hand wrote a card for Scotts birthday :) Our waiter was amazing; the personal touches like that are wonderful. NOT TO MENTION the food was superb.
We were happy with everything about it and I would absolutely come back.
Service was fine but steamer pot came with one mussel, 4 clams and one crab leg. Steaks were ordered medium well, came out medium rare.
They have a good variety of oysters from which to choose. Love their mignonette sauce. Cocktail sauce needed some doctoring with horse radish and tabasco but a good base to work with. Parking ample in city garage behind the restaurant. All good!
The food is always good. Miss the lobster special on Tuesdays but the crab legs are great on Wednesdays!
Another great find while travelling on business. Al fresco dining on a great assortment of oyster. Lobster bisque just right. Great meal..excellent service!
We were in a side room which was quiet but the main area with the bar was very noisy. Dinner was very good. Our only complaint was that every dessert we ordered was unavailable so we had ice cream at home!
we went for my birthday dinner and were kind of disappointed. Now, my main interested was the oysters. And the oysters were FANTASTIC! our server was great too and she had to shuck them herself since there are no shuckers on a sunday, but we didn't even notice they wait...it was 2 dozen oysters...6 different kinds. They were fabulous. But I ordered the new england clam chowder...it was like an oil slick and I love clam chowder, it just wasn't creamy and way to much oil. I also got the octopus salad. I have had grilled octopus many places and for this place being sea food oriented, it was way too tough. Disappointed. and the salad was WAY overdressed in a very tangy dressing. My mother ordered the lobster roll, which was mostly mayo and no lobster. The next day we went to Chickies and Petes and ordered their lobster roll, it was fantastic...so full of meat and flavor, with way less mayo. And now we know chickies has oysters too, may have to try them and see if they compare to Docs.
Went for a nice birthday dinner, and we were rushed in and out. Drinks, apps, dinner, desert, in 45 minutes. Had so much money left on the meter. Expected a dining experience, didn't get one.
If you are a foodie, don't come here. We ordered 3 different apps and different dinners. Nothing was worth talking about. Menu makes things sound good, but product is nothing near it. Sub par food, over-priced and poor quality and just not good.
We dine out most nights, and this was the most disappointing meal we could remember in a long time. Bummer that we chose a birthday to try this place.
There are way too many great places in West Chester to have a great meal then to waste your time here.
Great night. Crab specials were wonderful and the service was great. Strong recommendation- always a foot time.
ordered a variety of fresh oysters first 6 of 12 on the list. They were fresh and excellent! Entres were very good too. Pan seared scallops were awesome
Doc's never fails to give us a great night out of the house. Love coming here and the only place in WC with great seafood. Cant wait to sit on the patio for all you can eat crab legs this summer!
Had an excellent time. Loved the food and atmosphere and our service was better than I have had in some time. Looking forward to returning.
I typically eat here with my husband for our date nights but I saw they have a lunch menu as well so some co-workers and I took a walk over on our break. I had no idea how many lunch options they have and sandwiches are so tasty and fresh. Service was friendly and efficent. They accommodated our short timeline yet still having an enjoyable experience. Cant wait to come back!
First time having dinner at Doc's and I will definitely be back! My boyfriend started with oysters and I had the tuna. He raved about how cold and fresh they were (our waiter also said every Monday is $1 Oyster night which my boyfriend was really excited for). Our meals were equally as good and service was on point. Friendly, attentive and always had what we needed. We may have just found our new favorite dinner spot.
It was perfect: Food, price, service, atmosphere, noise level, clean, great location in town...can't beat that!
We have eaten here several times, and it was always good. This time was not a good experience. We had issues with food, beverages and service. I am hoping that this was a fluke, and that the next time we visit Docs, things will be what we have come to expect from them. However, it will be some time before I make it a top choice on my list of restaurants to when looking for a place to eat.
