Designed to emulate a classic, 1900s oyster hours, Doc Magrogan's Oyster House in University City in Philadelphia, PA brings diners back in time to a period when eating out meant fun, simple but fresh and delicious food and a lot of excellent drinks. Today, Doc Magrogan's Oyster House offers only the finest artisan beers, excellent wine and the freshest seafood.

Menus include lunch, dinner, brunch and drinks options. Diners will be able to enjoy several fresh seafood soups each day, large salads and appetizers that stand apart from the crowd. You can have a taste of the shore in Philly at Docs. Extensive seafood menu, a bit pricey, but everything was tasty. Nautical decor adds to the experience. Very nice and attentive wait staff.

When we arrived we were told the menu was limited since the restaurant was closing for the upcoming week. They were out of half the menu.

Doc's does have good oysters but once again they were sold out of our favorites.
The establishment does not list oyster prices on the raw bar menu like other establishments that sell oysters. When I received my bill I noticed the oysters at Doc's are .50-.75 higher than other establishments. Sleazy practive in my opinion.

I asked for the price of crabs without the corn and potatoes. I was given the price for 1.5 lbs of snow crabs with the corn and potatoes.

I will not run back to this place. If you aren't going to have a full menu, you need to tell your customers before they arrive, charge less for what you do have or close your restaurant.
If you are going to do things half way then don't do it at all. You have a lot of nerve pumping up the price of oysters to make up for lost business. You had inventory you need to get rid of without any regard for your customer.

I will never go to Doc's again.

Very disappointed... The evening began with a very acidic cosmopolitan delivered to my wife. This turned into an ordeal, first waiting for our waitress to return to the table to remove the drink and then watching extended discussion between our waitress and the barmaid. My wife observed the exchange between the two and then she saw the barmaid pour the acidic cosmopolitan back into her shaker, adding a copious amount of simple syrup to "fix" the drink. At that point, I walked to the bar and told the barmaid and our waitress to stop; changing the drink to a simple vodka and seven-up.

I'll stick with a review of my meal because my wife and friend will submit their own reviews. My app was coconut shrimp that seemed to have been cooked twice and arrived just this side of burnt. My entree was the crab cakes. They seemed warmed over instead of freshly prepared. The taste wasn't bad but I wasn't thrilled at all. Yes, I should have complained but I sat there trying to not to turn the night into a disappointment for my wife and friend. It turns out the entire party of three was disappointed. My last and final food related memory of the evening was choking down a barely warm cup of coffee. My last memory of the evening was of leaving the establishment; passing the manager, hostess, and remaining wait staff downing a shot at the end of the bar near the front door.

In fairness, my wife has lunched at this establishment many times with business associates and peers. She's always enjoyed her lobster mac & cheese. In fact this is why we selected Doc's for the evening. My advice to you is, find someplace else for a nice dinner.

Long wait for food even though restaurant was fairly empty--lunch. All food not brought at once. Salmon was only fair. Lobster fried rice, only mediocre. Satisfying, but kind of neither here nor there. Probably won't go back for lunch; dinner has been much better there. They need to do better, especially given that they are in a row of pretty decent places like the White Dog.

We have been going to Doc Magrogan's since it opened and this was the first time we were truly disappointed by the quality of the food. We hope this was uncharacteristic and is not a harbinger of the way the restaurant is trending. We are certainly reconsidering whether we will go back in the future.

The service was terrible. The waiter returned to our table on two separate occassions to inform us they were out of our oyster selection. Then, without approval, he brought a dozen oysters of whatever was still in stock and placed it on the table, expecting us to pay the price of those particular oysters (that he took upon himself to take out!).

Next, our appetizer was forgotten.

Finally, the seafood was awful. The shrimp were too chewy and the squid was overdone.

I took my wife here for a romantic date night. The staff catered to our every need from the time we walk in til the moment we left. The food was fantastic and the prices are reasonable

Overpriced for the value received. Server was clearly up selling. Additionally, many dishes were priced at one level, but the specials were not on a menue or a handout and the server never mentioned that they were each $ 60. I find that these type of selling practices aren't ones that I support and I won't return.

The food was good, the service was lack luster. They brought the entires 2 minutes after we got the apps, and then tried to make them fit on the table. the water was never refilled

We've been here before and usually very happy - but the service was off yesterday - not sure why as it was not very busy. Missed orders, drinks not refilled, lobster served without drawn butter... We'll give it another chance but if we see similar service next time, we're probably done with this place.

We were there for a late Sunday brunch so the crowds had died down and we were able to relax and enjoy conversation. The service was attentive and they were very accommodating to menu changes. We will go back again.

Nice little seafood eatery around the universities of Philly. Friendly waiters, good Ahi tuna, creative cocktails.
They also have quite a selection of regional oysters.
Would eat here again.

This restaurant does well with the appetizers and soups, like the New England Clam chowder or the lobster bisque. I would recommend for lunch. However, their entrees are not worth the price. For example, the filet minion is priced high but is really not great quality. The sides could be better cooked. The portions are pretty small as well.

Overall a good experience, however, our server was on her 3rd day at the job. While I realize food service professionals have a hard gig our server struggled to pace the meal/ordering properly and actually read us the entire menu twice over (at least). Great atmosphere and good food. Management might want to spend more time training/testing staff before having them out on the floor, especially for moderate-large parties.

I have eaten here half a dozen times and have recommended the restaurant. The little rooms are great, the waiters helpful and friendly, and the food very good and quite reasonably priced. Definitely will return.
