We were going to the Cleveland Playhouse Theatre later with friends and decided to try District. I think it is a odd name for a restaurant, but we had heard good things about it. I had the Cleveland Onion Soup, Seared Ahi Tuna with the Spinach Risotto. The soup was very good, as well as the preparation on the Ahi Tuna. The Spinach Risotto was flavorful, but a bit too mushy.
Food and service is first rate. Staff always very welcoming and attentive. Frequent The District regularly before shows - Brae remembers us and always has our drinks waiting and checks with the kitchen before getting to the table if our favorite items are available that night. One of our favorite spots.
Food was overpriced Applebee's. Got the herbed white fish, pretty blah. Not worth the money, at all!
The server was nice. But, our table was so close to the table next to us that her backside was in our space throughout the meal. No fault of hers, just too cramped.
Too many other good choices downtown, we won't return.
Was a great dinner before the show. Great location, wonderful staff.
My friend and I went to District prior to a Playhouse Square event. The Server was very good and efficient. The drinks and food were wonderful . There were many options for my vegetarian friend. My only complaint was that they should replenish the delicious hot rolls and butter and not just bring one per person. District has great ambiance and is a wonderful addition to Playhouse Square! I will definitely be back!
We went before a play at Playhouse Square. Our food was excellent but our waitress had quite an attitude and really was bordering on just plain rude. If it weren't for our experience with her I would've given it five stars
District is a very good restaurant in a great location for pre- or post-theater meals or cocktails when seeing a show at Playhouse Square. The menu is creative with reasonably priced specials and vegan or vegetarian options. The decor is a bit stark with relatively bare walls and no table clothes. But it is an overall worthwhile and enjoyable dining experience.
We were late for our reservation but the host and servers were still friendly and accommodating. Server provided an excellent description of entrees and special availability wine. Didn't feel rushed...food was excellent. Will return.
The District was great! Went there before a show and loved the food and service!
Excellent food, great service staff. Owner very friendly and makes sure everything meets your expectations.
FANTASTIC!! Two years ago, I brought my relative who has food restrictions. When I called to return, the restaurant still knew his needs!! When I came in, the waitress was quick to let me know she knew of Joey's needs. The owner also confirmed that the restaurant selections were all within our needs. How comforting and how special we were made to feel. The food was exceptional and memorable. The restaurant is loud before theatre and may be difficult to hear conversation for some. Overall, I highly recommend this outstanding restaurant.
We all ordered one of the Restaurant Week specials. Filet, chicken option and salmon -- all were exceptionally good. Special included soup or salad plus dessert. We even asked if we could substitute another potato and a vegetable -- "no problem." The desserts were exceptional as well. It was a full house -- and after dessert, we walked over to Playhouse Square to enjoy "The King and I." If you haven't tried District, you must.
Nice atmosphere and friendly service
Atmosphere and service were great. Were out of the menu options I wanted and the substitution was just alright.
Long story short- District reminded me of an upscale Applebee's. Our server was wonderful, but the food was not good. It was 100 % not worth the over-$100 meal for 2 people. The ambiance also looked as though they ran out of money half way through construction. No pictures (anything) on the walls, the Valet's crap (stool, umbrella, broom/dustpan, etc) was all thrown into the entry way- we thought we were walking in through a back entrance. Nope, that was in fact the front door.
My boyfriend got the onion seasonal soup, this was tasty. For dinner he got the NY Strip steak, it was just a terrible cut of meat. For the price of what they are charging, we could have gone to any other upscale steak restaurant and gotten a really excellent cut of meat. This also came with a "baked potato." Somehow it managed to encompass being overcooked but still tasting undercooked at the same time, kudos to whoever managed to achieve this.
I got the pear salad for an appetite, this was good. Almonds were over-toastedbut overall quite good. For dinner I got the lamb, this was pretty good, much better than my boyfriend's meal. I, however, was a bit confused because it came with "Israeli couscous," this was just rice with diced carrots in it. While it was not bad, it was definitely NOT couscous.
Then came time for dessert. My boyfriend got the Fire and Ice, he said it was good but a dime a dozen, nothing special about it. I got the creme brûlée. Just don't. It was literally frozen in the middle and they clearly used previously frozen blueberries in the sauce as each had that really weird skin texture to them (you know what I'm talking about if you've ever eaten one of these).
We had an issue with two meals - one was forgotten when the order was prepared and was slow in coming, and the other meal was just not good. The manager took the poor meal off of our tab and brought over a couple of desserts to make up for the two meals.
In most cases the above situation would have spoiled our experience - and frequently managers do not acknowledge what goes wrong. But because our service was outstanding, and the manager went above and beyond, we would definitely go back.
District is our best restaurant in Playhouse Square. Plenty of menu options and the cost is reasonable.
It was a hit noisy, and I was glad to have been seated in the back. The food was delicious and Lauren was very attentive to our needs and we were served with plenty of time to get to the theatre. We will come back
We had dinner reservations immediately following the show at the Playhouse and the timing was ideal. The host greeted and welcomed us immediately upon entering, then escorted us to our table. Our server cordially introduced herself and then took our cocktail orders and allowed us to adequate time to review the menu.
My girl started with the pear salad and then the NY Strip AU Poivre with a side of asparagus.
I began with the Black Pepper Crusted Ahi Tuna and then had the Seafood Pumpkin Curry, finishing with the Creme Brûlée.
It was all so very delicious, well prepared with excellent presentation. Our server was friendly, courteous, knowledgeable of her menu, personable yet very professional and attentive. I highly recommend this restaurant
This was my 2nd time at District. Ate here prior to a show at playhouse square. Cocktails and food was very good, though my Ahi tuna was a bit over cooked ( more than just seared). Prices are reasonable for a decent restaurant. This place stays on my list for pre-show dining.
Extremely friendly and hospitable staff. Great meal and fulfilling portions.
Food and drinks were good- perhaps a little pricey for what it was. Was a little slow service, but very friendly staff!
We enjoyed an early dinner after a 1 PM show at Playhouse. We both had their seafood pasta with lobster which was delicious. So good that they ran out of the special right after we got our meals. Service was attentive. This is one of our favorite places to dine at after a show at Playhouse.
Our waitress, Lauren, was extremely knowledgeable about the menu selections She was able to offer recommendations, which proved to be delicious. Our group of four all ordered the beet and pear salad, which was absolutely delicious. All four of thoroughly enjoyed our dinners, two of enjoying the seafood pasta special, one ordering trout, while the other ordered the Barramundi. The Fire and Ice dessert was phenomenal. Lauren was aware of our 7:30 curtain time at the playhouse, and kept us on schedule.
We had dinner here before going to the theater. The staff was aware of our time frame and kept us on schedule. The menu is interesting offering many wonderful options. All of us loved our food. Between us, we had the Salmon, the filet, the chicken and the special which was a vegetarian dish. I had asked for a table far away from the door both for warmth and decreased noise level. They honored that request and we had a great time!
The restaurant is cold and unwelcoming. The door lets in cold air to the main dining room in the winter.
the food was excellent and so was the waiter. I really wish i wrote down his name so I could acknowledge him. really enjoyed the experience.
This was my first time there, the service was very good and a lot of interesting food dishes so I will have to come back to try more. My calamari was served more like a salad and it was very filling and delicious. It started out very quiet but as the leisurely dinner went on it got crowed and noisier but never to noisy not to hear the conversation as my table.
Our table was too close to another and because of noise level it was difficult to talk. Food was great!o
There before a show with a date. Had an amazing server. The mussels and calamari were great starters and the portions were perfect. Server was attentive and frequently visited the table. Ordered a NY Med-rare. It came out perfect and the veggies band mashed potatoes were great sides. Had a German chocolate thing for dessert which was suggested by our server. Had a great time and would suggest this place to friends.
Great place and they're happy to work with dietary needs.
The food was fresh and well-prepared. We made a last minute request for a table and they were friendly and accommodating. The service was excellent. Overall, a really wonderful date night experience.
The dinner was excellent, the service was excellent , the valet service couldn't be beat and it is an excellent choice for pre-theater dining and convenience.
food was tepid at best (ie calamari, and my wifes grouper) we sent the calamari back (which we honestly never do.) my brisket was slightly better temp-wise, but everything struck as coming of steam tables! had much better previous experiences there!
The food was disappointing; my apple and beet salad tasted like vinegar and the dinner entrees that we ordered were extremely bland (crab cakes and filet). We did not think that the food was worth what we paid. Additionally, there were some extremely loud, drunk individuals at the bar who ruined the atmosphere a bit. We would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
We booked a reservation when Cowell and Hubbard was booked. It looks like a nice, higher quality restaraunt but the food is horrible. The calimari was cold and smooshy... Tasted like it had been sitting out for hours. My salmon was completely raw and my dish full of oil ( spoonfuls). The manager noticed it and came over to apologize but I'm sure this is typical. My husbands dish (the pasta ) just tasted like salt... bad salt. Unfortunate because we could use a few more good restaurants in the area. Guess we just need to make our cowell and Hubbard reservations earlier!
Service was excellent. Food was fair. There was way too much dressing on my salad. The potatoes under my salmon were overcooked (petrified) , but the fish was cooked well. Not the best dining experience, but also not the worst.
We have eaten here several times and have enjoyed the experience. There were two minor issues with our pear salad and crab cakes. Our concerns were listened to. In fact, we were comped desserts.
The wait staff and manager were both very helpful.
Great food. Friendly service. Beautiful decor. Simple to reserve on Open Table. Will go back and will reccommend to friends and family.
We chose The District for a Friday evening date. I knew the place would clear out for because of shows in the area, since it's right in the thick of Playhouse Square, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves by the time our food arrived. I think that's what made the fact that the food wasn't great even more egregious.
I had the Southern Tier handle, which was some type of vanilla porter, and it was probably the best part of my experience. We both agreed that the decor was cool and we liked the area. The place isn't that big. My wife had a bellini that she enjoyed. No problem with the drinks or selection.
We both ordered steaks, mine was a NY Strip over pureed potatoes and she got the bacon-wrapped filet (which was a chef special for the evening) My steak came out MW when ordered MR and my wife's filet was R (maybe MR, if you're really being nice, but no, it was R) We ended up swapping steaks because she couldn't handle it. Her asparagus wasn't crisp, but mushy. She was looking forward to it and was rather disappointed. They may have gotten our orders confused, meaning swapping the temperatures we asked for on the streaks, but even if so, the filet hardly touched the grill.
I don't write many reviews, but it was more upsetting than normal because it's a mid-to-high tier restaurant. Overall bill was around $100 with tip and drinks. I expected more. Especially because the place was empty. There were absolutely zero excuses to fail in this scenario, but fail they did.
