District American Kitchen and Wine Bar
The staff was rude and refused to sit us when we arrived. We had reservations for 11:30 and would not be seated before that due to the restaurant not opening before then. If the hostess had a better attitude or allowed us to sit in the empty restaurant, that would have been preferred.
Typical service in the dining room once we arrived. The waiter will either come around a few times as soon as we’re seated, then forget about us. Or forget about us in the beginning, then decide to be attentive. He brought the check as soon as our door arrived then failed to return to refill drinks or even take the payment until we flagged him down.
Great place for a nice lunch. Excellent food and value
Wonderful place to dine downtown very cosmopolitan
Fantastic! We will definitely eat here again. Manager was roaming the floor talking with customers and helping out. Great place!
Overall, very good food, pretty good service, but too loud to be able to visit with friends.
I usually love the steak and fries at this restaurant. They’re using a different kind of meat it’s smaller and thicker and extremely tough. I asked for sweet potato fries instead of regular fries I got regular fries. One of my guests had virtually no salad dressing on her salad. Another guest got a salad with chicken and the chicken was so over peppered she could barely eat it. Really disappointed this time and I take my group there frequently.
This was my fourth visit to The District as it is a convenient restaurant prior to a downtown event. Each time I have been here the service has been incredibly slow. After waiting 15 minutes we had to find someone to locate our waitress. We had to order drinks at the same time as dinner and had to request the check when dinner arrived due to the long wait times. I ordered the salmon which was good but nothing special.
Worst pre-concert dinner ever... with waited an hour after ordering and had to spend both our dinner back. Manager apologized and said they were busy???? Isn’t that the point. Thankfully the Billy Joel concert was amazing.
$22.00 entree (eg duck legs, plank grilled salmon, etc) very tasty and good sized portions.
Convenient place to eat before symphony hall event
Great food but marginal service. We had calamari and devils on horseback apps, and halibut and sea scallops for dinner. All of it was great. If we’d had a waiter who could actually be found, it would have been much better. It wasn’t even a busy night.
They catered to our every need. We were delighted with the cotton candy. Our salads were very good. I will return.
Fourth time I've eaten here and very pleased. Solo diner seated by a window not shoved in front of the kitchen door or put in corner. Attentive wait staff, easy vibe, not pushy or hovering. Excellent salmon with parmeson risotto. Not overcooked, served at the proper temperature, nice portion. Caesar salad had a tad too much lettuce rib but still good. Great downtown spot perfect for before opera/symphony/theater meal.
Nice meal, good service and great location.
Great food. Portions not too large but adequate. Great for before theater.
The District American Kitchen and Wine Bar was the perfect place to have lunch before going to the theater. The food was excellent and its location was right across the street from the Herberger. I ordered potato soup and the salmon entree, which was moist and tasty. I will certainly return the next time I'm going to the show!
We’ve actually met her three times and had wonderful food every single time. The salmon is exceptionally good. My friend had chicken and a couple of times and absolutely loved it. The entire staff hustles every second and the service has always been wonderful!!
The entrees (scallops and short ribs) we had were delicious. The dinner bread is typical hotel catering rolls. The signature Mai Tai came in a short glass with huge ice cubes. Overpriced and disappointing. So it's simply not worth the price given what you can get elsewhere for less or with far more food and better drinks.
Wonderful, helpful, friendly staff, and comfortable, pleasing atmosphere. I wish the food were only half so good as the rest of the experience! If you're looking for some nice clean American fare, you may be very disappointed! The meats and seafood are very good, but EVERYTHING is drenched in various fats and sugars that totally overpower the dishes -- seems impossible just to get some simple basics, and that's a shame.
This was our second visit and frankly it was a fall-back because we had left it too late for after ballet meals at other well though of restaurants. But we were very pleased with the experience, particularly the food which was imaginative and beautifully cooked. Our party had duck, halibut and scallops, all of which were excellent, including the accompanying sauces and sides. This is more than a restaurant for hotel guests, it is worth a special trip.
This is a highly worthy restaurant with a chef trying to do interesting things and succeeding. That it is a half block from the Herberger, a few blocks from the Symphony and the sports centers, and 3 blocks from the Light Rail adds up to an excellent spot.
Great lunch spot - their "Nothing over $9" was perfect for our group of gals before going to a matinee play across the street at the Herberger Theater. One word of caution - a glass of house wine was more than our lunch, but overall it was still a great value!
From salads to sandwiches, to entrees, District is consistently delicious. Also offering validated parking with the valet is the most convenient plus. I wish they extended breakfast fare to lunch time on the weekend.
Convenient to the Herberger Theatre with complimentary valet parking. Each of us had salmon, two different dishes, each delicious and well prepared. John was our waiter giving us great service without being intrusive.
Loved the cotton candy!
The venue is very nice, food and service not so much. The service felt “pushy” to turn the tables. Food was marginal to ok, nothing special.
I'd give this place a five if it were more accurately priced. For what you pay, and especially on Valentines day, I feel like it isn't a great value.
I'm not against fancy dining and have been to places comparable in price ( or even less) that are much better options.
For 55 a person on valentines, the place was moderately noisy (not terrible, but not ideal if looking for something romantic), the chicken was dry, a tad overcooked, and the portions were very tiny.
My girlfriend doesn't eat like I do, and this is the first time ever after dinner where she said she was starving... Seriously.
Staff was very courteous, attentive, and the place did have a nice ambiance... Nicely lit, great staging, spacious, and a great location in downtown.
I give it four out of five. If you want a five, and even want to save a little, go to The Vig a few blocks away
The girl who seated us would not let us sit further away from the entrance. She said all 14 plus empty tables were reserved. We had a 6:00 reservaton but no specic table number request. When we asked for the table number of another table so we could specificly request a table the next time she then told us they were not really reserved but she had to seat people on a rotating basis for the severs assagned talbes no matter what the requests of the customer might be. Apparently she was not trained properly or this is the policy of the resturannt. Either way we will not return.
The restaurant offers several seating choices, such as bar only, open lounge, casual seating, lastly formal. The service was attentive. We were seated for a Valentine's limited menu at $55.00 per person. You only had 2 entree selections and three entree selections and lava cake as dessert
Tomato soup was bland. Salmon looked very nice but was on the dry side. The Caesar salad was sub-par; presented more like a chopped salad, it looked drab and tasted bland. The dining room looks dated and stuffy.
Our service was one of the worst experiences; discourteous to say the least. Unfortunately will not be going back and will not be recommending to others.
Everything was Awesome! We arrived late due to bad traffic and they were happy to accommodate us. We were attending a play across the street and our servers were very diligent in getting our order in, food out and squaring the bill, which was awesome! The food was fabulous and other then a screaming child :( it was a wonderful experience!!!
One of the worst restaurants I’ve ever been to. Service was awful! Food made me sick afterwards. Don’t go here!!!
We decided on The District from Yelp reviews and it didn’t disappoint. It was a couple blocks from our hotel and easy to find. Our server was great - knowledgeable, helpful, and quick. The bacon wrapped, stuffed date appetizer was very tasty, and the braised short rib stroganoff was beautiful and delicious. We finished it off with the Lemon Bombe, another beautiful creation that was just as delicious as it looked.
Great waiter, mediocre food. Handy for going to a show or event downtown so you can park, eat, then go wherever. Decent enough choice for going early and beating the traffic.
The American is in a perfect location for either pre/post theatre or show in downtown Phoenix. We have dined there several times over the years and have always found the food and service to be excellent.
A little pricy, but only because it's a very nice restaurant. The food is absolutely incredible and definitely worth the cost. The service is fantastic and it's a very fun environment. We were there for a family dinner with nine people and the staff was very attentive and the service was very quick. Everyone loved their food and the dessert is to die for!
The $9.00 lunch is a great value. Great portion and quality.
The duck, chop salad and salmon were wonderful. The pork chops were not. Enjoyable setting. Good service.
Visiting the Phoenix area for the first time 1/24/19 - 1/29/19 to escape some of Chicago's winter, my mother and I found this restaurant through a Google search. From start to finish the friendly staff were courteous, engaging, knowledgeable, and accommodating. Our delicious meal and flavorful wine enhanced our Phoenix trip immensely. You can't go wrong with this eatery! Thumbs up!
