DISH+drinks Ratings and Reviews
Once we found it (it's in a hotel and there was no sign for the restaurant visible on a rainy night) it was easy to use valet pkg. Service was excellent and got us to the Ken Ctr on time and meal was very good. I ordered the swordfish special and my friend got the prix fixe house salad, veggie risotto and choc cake. Everything was delicious including the recommended wine. Entrees alone are a little pricey IMO but the prix fixe was a good value.
I've been eating off-and-on in Foggy Bottom for nearly 40 years, and it has always been somewhat of a wasteland. No difference here. Service was friendly but seemed not to be familiar with the menu. We had the a prix fixe, so not that much to know, but itt got rung up as a la carte (for 50% more) which which prompted a 10 minute cancellation/re-do as we were rushing off to the Kennedy Center. The food itself was unremarkable; overall OK, but the fish and chips were thin fillets in a heavy batter, so the whole thing was rather dry after its time in the fryer.
We go to this restaurant very often for several reasons:
1. You can hear yourself talk (very rare in DC restaurants).
2. Good food reasonably priced.
3. Very good wine selection and knowledgeable staff.
4. Good location -- walk to Kennedy Center and Metro
5. Valet parking
6. They're usually very good at seating you on time
I was looking to try someplace different before a night with the wife and kids at the Kennedy Center. The restaurant had good reviews; so I thought we'd try it...and I'm so glad we did. The food was delicious -- large portions and tasty. My son and I had crab cakes; my wife had the scallops and my other son had the salmon. We are very satisfied with dinner (we did not get appetizers), wine/cocktails for me and my wife and the chocolate souffle. What also made for a memorable experience was our waiter, who was friendly and responsive and the ambiance -- we were happily seated near the fireplace on a cold night. We're definitely coming back.
Wanted a light lunch before a performance at the Kennedy Center. Two of us shared the mac N cheese with bacon and the chef's salad. Greens were fresh, good balance of ingredients. Mac N cheese had cheese mostly on top, not much bacon. Perfect light lunch before a theatre matinee performance.
Tired of the uninspired menu of the Kennedy Center's Rooftop Terrace and disappointed by the lack of consistency at Kingbird in the Watergate, we decided to take a 10-minute stroll over to The River Inn (Dish+Drinks). Logistically the location is fine for an evening performance at the KC and the wait staff knows how to get you in and out in time for your show. I wish the ambiance and food lived up to the many positive reviews. It's a very small place and our table adjoined the hotel lobby robbing any intimacy one might have hoped for given the size of the place. One of our guests had the crab cakes which were roundly applauded, but the rest of us had the grilled salmon which the menu stated was to come on a bed of beluga lentils, applewood bacon, with a beurre rouge sauce. Instead, the fish was served on a bed of lettuce...I can't quite call it a salad because I don't think it aspired to such heights. The salmon was cooked appropriately, but there was nothing else in the dish to hold it together. Fish and lettuce are what I remember. Poor meal planning to either fall short of such basic ingredients as lentils and bacon, or to serve such a bland pairing. Given the experience I would be hard pressed to give the place another try.
Inexplicably I've haven't been to Dish in quite a while and had forgotten just how enjoyable it is. For those of us who live nearby it is our local, easy, comfortable place to go. The food is very good and is also good value for the money. We try to go after 7:15 pm when the Kennedy Center crowd leaves for the evening performance and the noise level drops delightfully. Many of us also put our out-of-town guests at the River Inn Hotel (which the restaurant is part of) and inevitably receive compliments about the Restaurant.
Went here before a show at the Kennedy Center. Very convenient for the show. I might be more careful if the show at the Kennedy Center was very popular. The staff was small so if the restaurant was packed, they might get backed up. However, the service we experienced was great with nice wine recommendations. All in our party had the mussels and they were perfectly cooked and seasoned. We will definitely come back.
We were late for our reservation due to traffic and they were very accommodating. Suggested a great wine and were attentive. My fish special (Char) was excellent and my companions's steak was very tender. This was a pre theater dinner and would definitely do again!
Good place for pre-theater meal. Very close to the Kennedy Center. Cozy spot that crams tables in next to the bar, so expect a lot of noise and not a lot of table space. Food was good, service needs work. Immediately tries to push bottles of wine on us, wine on the menu wasn't available and tried to assume an alternative and had to push to get the menu back, when clearing the table dropped food all over my wife's brand new coat. Good food, but don't expect the level of service typically for the $$$.
The area around the Kennedy Center is a food desert, so it was great to find DISH+drinks, which is an easy 7-10 minute walk away. They have a very nice pre-theater dinner and, as other reviewers have noted, they know their guests. Drinks, dinner and dessert were all served well within time to walk back to the Kennedy Center for the performance. I can happily recommend!
It's our go-to choice for a casual dinner after work or before going to the Kennedy Center. Good menu, excellent choice of wines, knowledgeable staff.
Also, this restaurant is quiet enough that one can actually have a conversation. This is very unusual for a DC eatery. This is why it should be everyone's first choice.
Valet parking, quiet, good location, yummy food -- what else could one ask for?
