About
Dirty French is a New York bistro created by Major Food Group’s Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi and Jeff Zalaznick. The restaurant takes its culinary cues from the timeless dishes and preparations of classic French bistros and enlivens them utilizing modern techniques and bold flavors. Dishes like Duck à l’Orange with ras el hanout and preserved oranges remain true to their French roots but are restyled with flavors that explore the breadth and depth of the global French culinary influence. Dirty French is located in the Ludlow Hotel in Manhattan’s storied Lower East Side.

Lots of sizzle, but no steak....literally. I wasn't sure if I ordered a steak or a steak-...yes, it was that thin. To say it was disappointing would be an understatement. For the amount of money, I expected a lot more. For those who are on the fence, I would go somewhere else that has food just as good, better service for half the price.
Friendly waitstaff, very attentive. Pam was our server she is a pleasure to deal with.
Fantastic food, great location and the service was on point
Spectacular meal in every way - food, service, ambience.
The food was ok but nothing special. Friendly staff, excellent service. Too noisy for my standards.
Very good meal. We started with the oysters and tartare which were both very good. The bread they give is amazing so make sure to get it. Dover sole was very expensive for not very much. My friends liked the duck but didn't absolutely love it. String beans were really yummy. The beignets for dessert were scrumptious. Pamela, our waitress, was absolutely great. Expensive meal but worth it overall. Good for a special night out but not sure I need to run back - unless its on an expense account.
Came here to celebrate my friend's birthday.
Pro - duck breast was really delicious, large portion, crispy skin and yummy orange sauce. Much better than the steak entree
room for improvement
- tables are too small
- grilled oysters are too salty, dry, little meat while the sauce is delicious
- indicated birthday celebration on dinner reservation and wait staff did nothing. Not sure I will celebrate any occasion in this venue.
We're in our 70s, so while it was fun to see young people, this was not the place for us. Too loud. My spicy pork dish was excellent, but my friends, who ordered seafood, were disappointed.
WE love the restaurant. You just need to have some reasonably priced bottles of wine. Even just one bottle of each variety between $85-$125 would be great. We had to order a $200 bottle of wine and went through 4 bottles. And while the wine was good, we've had better wine for less money at other restaurants. I think having pricier optoins is fine, but just give people a reasonably priced option as well.
Absolutely great!! Great from beginning to end from the greeting to the drinks the awesome food and service! Totally going back here!!! Loved it!!
Have been to Dirty French many times over the year. The food is delicious and the ambience is great. Unfortunately service has deteriorated over time with it taking significantly longer for the staff to take our order, clear plates, etc. Tough comparison because service used to be stellar. Will still continue to come back, just a bit disappointing.
Always a great place.
Great room, good jazz, very good food, and very good service. We had brunch.
It was a bitter cold night, but all was warm and welcoming inside Dirty French. The waiter was wonderful, leading us to some lovely food choices, the sommelier friendly and so in tune with both our pallets and price point. Best of all for me is the ambience -- chic but cozy with its fire in the fireplace, plants in the garden room, and surprises in every corner. A glance in the mirror opposite our table revealed an array of white masks splashed with red -- a bit of carnival where we least expected it! This was not our first time at Dirty French and won't be our last. Looking forward to more.
Mushroom millefeuille was good and inventive, but the main dishes, though good, lacked creativity. Too expensive for what it is.
Terrible food
Terrible, the worst
Fab dinner. Before show at Mercury Lounge. Definitely will return! Friend and I each had trout meunière.
Delicious food as usual. Eggs, pastries, wine. Really good time and today they had a cool jazz band.
Chicken for two is a must! Mushroom app is delicious as well as doughnut desserts. Cocktails great too
the perfect spot for a special dinner with my family!
We celebrated Birthday! The service was slow. Took about 20 mins to get our drinks and they messed up two of our orders. Ambiance is nice and the hotel it’s attached to is beautiful. Don’t think I would come back, food was very expensive for the quality.
Food and ambience were good. Service was so so.. feels as if they didn’t have enough waiters to serve the floor. We were waiting long time to be seated, to order and for the food to come. And the waiter barely spoke to us to check if everything was alright.
Dirty French continues to offer up some of the most amazing dining experiences in all of New York
Top quality food (tuna tartare and grilled oysters)
Thoughtful and friendly service, beautiful relaxed atmosphere, great food and extensive wine list. What else is there? I recommend the duck...
Christmas Dinner
Food was great. Music too loud.
Loved our dinner, menu was classic, inspired french fare, in a warm cozy setting. Mashed potatoes were creamy, buttery goodness; haricots vert perfectly cooked. We were celebrating our Anniversary and the restaurant provided us lovely comped glasses of champagne. Very thoughtful, thank you.
Great place.
Come back a million times !
Staff not very friendly. Pushing drinks and food.
We had been wanting to try this place for a while and finally made it over last weekend to celebrate our anniversary. I’m Happy to say it was a very solid choice. We were greeted by the very fabulous Royce who gave us a lovely table and made some very good recommendations. We had the lamb carpaccio, the grilled oysters and the duck. All were excellent choices. The bread they give you is also delicious. We had the lemon tart for dessert which was also good
Brunch for 8 and it was wonderful. Thanks
Unbelievable from beginning to end!!
Overall a good experience. Appetizers were good, entree’s very good. Service was food and not intrusive . The atmosphere was very nice but the blaring 80s pop music has to go. Finally I wish they had some more reasonable price options on wine. At this price point (both food and wine) there definitely are better options out there.
Met up with friends and had so much fun!
espectacular! muy buen lugar! muy buena comida, buen ambiente
I never write a negative review however today’s experience was a true disappointment. I read other reviews about how bad the service was and since I wasn’t in a rush I didn’t think much of it and it was astonishing to experience such a lack of service and untrained waitstaff. The food was also disappointing I ordered the duck confit hash... both the duck and the potatoes were so crispy that they were crunchy… Way over done.
Fabulous on all counts. Food was spectacular and service attentive and helpful.
Excellent French bistro food. Service was friendly but a bit disorganized at opening for lunch. Noise level would probably be much higher when busy.
