Contemporary American
Cutting edge vegetables with added flavor and no politics in this sleek and stylish restaurant showcasing colorful, pop-tastic dishes from award-winning chef, Amanda Cohen. A full bar, counter seating, a wine list curated by wine director, Ben Eyring, and vegetables in all their earth-shattering, gob-smacking glory. Diners coming for dinner will have a choice of The Vegetable Patch ($65, tip included) featuring five courses of Dirt Candy’s greatest hits, or they can take a trip to The Vegetable Garden ($99, tip included) which is at least nine courses and changes according to the season, what we’re experimenting with, and what our foragers and farmers bring to our door. Dirt Candy offers an a la carte menu at the bar only.

What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
8.4

The new and improved Dirt Candy location on the Lower East Side is bigger and shinier. And it’s still really, really good.

Ratings 8.0-8.5:The best way to think about restaurants in the low to mid 8′s is that these are the places you would absolutely go back to, anytime. These restaurants are ones that you want to bring a friend to, just so they can also experience the duck carnitas, or burger, or whatever dish the place is known for.

Being a vegetarian for over 6 years and recently converting to vegan, I have tried many restaurants. Although, the food is good I was surprising shocked that it was not more unique. Over-spiced and Very Over Priced.

Matched the website’s own predictions exactly, had some fun and some downs. Some courses entirely overshadowed others, such as the fennel couscous and dyed monkey bread feeling wimpy in size and flavor next to the entrees and first tiered appetizer. The standouts personally were the mushroom and cucumber entrees and the eggplant foster and cauliflower cake desserts. Absolutely delicious. Would love coming back at the opposite end of the year to see the differences in seasonals and staples, or even years in the future to see the menu's evolution- all dependent on travel plans to NYC. I came because I love trying experimental and fun dishes to implement in my own cooking (for myself of course), and on that end, I definitely was not disappointed. A trip highlight.

One of the top three meals in my life! Everything was so amazingly good! I’m vegan and a foodie, have eaten my way through NYC and it doesn’t get better than Dirt Candy. Although vegetarian and not vegan, there was no problem making the menu vegan (it mostly already is). Yey for the vegetables

Great food experiences. Had 5 course tasting menu. Impressive creative dishes. Largest savoury course came last and should of come earlier due to lack of hunger at that point.

Disappointed that a restaurant to celebrate the vegetable did not have any interesting vegetables other than the local forged greens around the vegetable tower. For dinner only two choices -tasting menu. Unfortunately other than a few unique tastings such as the chilled soup, mushroom pate and cucumber three ways there was too much salt and soya.
A lack of more unique vegetable and I wonder why cauliflower cake when the cauliflower did not elevate the uniqueness of the cake- although delicious.
Staff and Service was excellent.

I was disappointed just in the sense I expected more unique vegetables, herbs and tasting notes other than salt.

Wonderful vegetarian restaurant. Fixed price menu with 2 options: 5 courses or 9 courses. Very inventive food: not all items were home runs, but enough were to create a great experience. Superb service, no tipping with prices inclusive. Recommended!

Dirt Candy was enjoyable for a non-vegetarian person like myself. All of the courses were super tasty & to be honest, i was completely full by the time we got to the 5th course of the Veggie Patch set menu. I would go back for another meal again.

Sunday brunch this past weekend was amazing - couldn’t believe they’d incorporated vegetables into biscuits, scones, crepes and coffee cake in such a unique and delicious way...at first we were skeptical that it would work but oh boy did it! Can’t wait to go back for dinner - even though getting a reservation might be more than a little challenging...

We opted for the extended tasting menu, which resulted in a 3+ hour dining engagement with as much as 20 minutes between courses at certain intervals in a restaurant that was not at full occupancy. This was disappointing as it was a special occasion and we had plans we had to cancel due to the bad meal pacing.

While I do not being rushed during tasting menus, this was the longest experience I’ve had in a restaurant with dishes far less sophisticated then comparable experiences.

The restaurants playful vegetable first takes can be satisfying and surprising but were often very underwhelming and lacked depth or complexity. The pasta with peanut sauce and celery was one note, texturally challenging, and simply not good. The dish of broccoli in a hearty broth that came at the same time had amazing depth in the broth, but was essentially just undercooked broccoli without anything to lift it.

The spinach and cilantro soup with pistachio rim was quite impressive - simple with a huge depth of flavor. The beet robotaya dish similarly surprising and enjoyable. The play on the tangine with cous cous was flavorful but so small - and the broth came out less than room temperature, making something that would have been outstanding somewhat flat.

The deserts were largely misses. I understand the desire to incorporate vegetables in playful ways, but sometimes you need to self edit. The cauliflower ice cream was grainy and unappetizing and the cake cloyingly sweet. I did enjoy the eggplant bananas foster. Why use eggplant when banana is already perfect - I don’t know. It didn’t add anything to the dish besides a strange texture, but the basil sauce and sorbet elevated it with acid and herbaciousness.

Our wait was acknowledged without us raising the issue, and the staff was kind and accommodating. In the end, the food itself often underwhelmed which made the timing somewhat irritating.

While Dirt Candy is still an excellent restaurant, it has lost a step over the years.

I was there for brunch and it had the worst vegan/vegetarian bruch menu I've ever seen. Really carrots and beets in every dish or how about fried tofu in a bun. It's 2019 not 2008.

Incredible dining experience! They were super accommodating for a vegan diet and the 10 course menu was outstanding - amazing flavors, presentation and variety. My only wish was that the dishes were smaller so we could eat them all and not waste anything as we got full towards the end. Highly recommended!
