What Insiders Are Saying
The new and improved Dirt Candy location on the Lower East Side is bigger and shinier. And it’s still really, really good.
Vegetables never tasted so good. This was the most creative flavorful wonderful meal we have had in a long time. Must go!!
I loved Dirt Candy because as it boasts, no one elevates vegetables to a Michelin star worthy place like them. Great 5 course meal and friendly staff. A bonus the tip is included and wait staff is treated ethically.
Loved every detail! From the flowers painted on the wall to the creative cocktails to each unique vegetable course, it was all we could have asked for and more! The Popcorn Beets and Carrot Burger were certainly the highlight, but each dish had its own uniqueness and craft. Will definitely be coming back for more!
We enjoyed our meal, and found the flavors exciting and different from what we might make at home. The cost for vegetables is a bit much, but this place is great for a special occasion. Get the beet drink!
Service was lovely and efficent. Food is always perfection! There is no more fun and creative a vegetarian restaurant to go to than this one. It's not "healthy" vegetarian - it's delicious vegetarian that even people who love meat will love too!!!
Had my girlfriend come into town and she is vegan. This was her first time in NYC and we did a lot of things throughout the weekend. She said that dinner here was by far her favorite experience of the trip. Also, I’m a super carnivore but I was incredibly impressed with the food here. The presentation is whimsical and modern. The food is bursting with flavor. The staff was also extremely friendly and welcoming. Will come back.
Interesting take on vegetable based dining. I had the 5 course menu which was substantial. I had fully vegan option. Each course pretty much focused on just one vegetable and presented it in different ways. I thought the meal bread heavy. It started with a serving of freshly grilled bread and dipping olive oil, followed by book chit leaves with a bagna claudia dipping sauce and Korean grilled broccoli (spicy), then portobello mushrooms and peaches two ways with Melba toast- this was my favorite dish- then roasted carrot in brioche burgers with a pickled carrot salad- the salad was excellent-, then roasted and fried Brussels sprout tacos- didn’t think this dish was very good, then a chocolate mushroom filled with thyme blondies and espresso cream served with a coffee hot chocolate sauce. I felt one or two courses didn’t work that well but for the price the overall experience was good.
We had the most incredible dinner that we have ever eaten. Each course came out and had such a unique taste from the previous course. We ate slowly and savoured each bite, and we felt FULL after the five course dinner! I could never imagine ordering the larger course meal. The ambiance was peaceful and modern, with a chill vibe. We will absolutely 100% return when we visit this city!
Our dinner at Dirt Candy was the highlight of a weekend visit to New York City. I've been to plenty of vegetarian restaurants, including some high-end ones, before. Many use vegan ingredients in an attempt to recreate the flavors and textures of a meaty meal. That's not the philosophy here, which I would roughly describe as purchasing all the vegetables at the farmer's market (the chef does not appear to be a big fan of fruit, even in the middle of summer) and making a meal of it. This results in veggies appearing in unexpected places: green pepper in the rum cocktail, cauliflower in the dessert. Yet it all works (at least for people who enjoy vegetables). My husband and I ordered the longer tasting menu and split about 14 different dishes. None was a bust and several were home runs: carrot sliders, Peking pea, and eggplant foster.
We were seated at the counter, which provided a comfortable perch to observe the cooking crew. We had pleasant interactions with several of them, including the chef-owner. Our servers were very helpful and unpretentious.
Had a great meal and the staff is just A+... fun dishes and interesting wine. Bonus: the server also accommodated a last minute birthday candle request. Highly recommended.
It is a really special dining experience whether a-la-carte or sitting for a tasting menu. Get ready to be impressed! Highly recommend picking up their cookbook when you finish up! Though the recipes are mostly difficult, knowing how much effort goes into each plate makes the next visit even more special. I make hella hush-puppies now, in any case. Love this restaurant and wishing them success and continued exploration. Bonus points for their profit sharing model. Innovative through and through!
I love Dirt Candy. Incredible food. Impeccable service. I can't wait for another special occasion to visit again. Come hungry!
Excellent, unique vegetarian dishes. Great wait staff.
We last visited Dirt Candy at the old hole in the wall location. This time it was our anniversary. Had the 5 course and it was great— imaginative, fun and delicious pure vegetable food. Really good value
So delicious! So much food but so good
Excellent food and service.
Best vegetarian ever ( vanilla black in London a close second)
Me and my partner have been vegetarian for 12 years. We are very familiar with vegetarian restaurants and this one was just not our favorite.
We left feeling hungry and honestly a lot of the entrees were difficult to eat. I’m all for creative eating but....
Inventive cuisine, phenomenal service, still hands down the best vegan experience in New York! 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
Fun and creative vegetarian dinner. Great experience. Food was good, service and presentation was excellent!
Just writing this to use up the word count
What a wonderful experience. I love the concept of having food just brought to us through several courses and being surprised by each one. Service was excellent, everyone was very friendly, natural and accommodating. My wife has celiac disease and we needed to be sure that all of our food was free of any gluten or cross contamination with other surfaces. They specially prepared certain dishes to be sure that she was safe and that is critical to us. We were able to relax and know that we were going to be able to enjoy a delicious meal that did not make her sick.
An inappropriately delicious night out!
My husband and I were delighted with our 5 course meal. Each course a very pleasant surprise!
Our server was perfect and all the people that attended to us were very professional, not interrupting our conversation or putting their arms in our faces to fill water glasses. Everyone was great! I was all ready to give a generous tip for such amazing service, but discovered that the gratuity is included in the price of the meal. The 5 courses were very filling. We intend to return really hungry so we can try the 9 course meal and also the wine pairing. We regret that we did not choose the wine pairing. I imagine that it would have been amazing. Though, the specialty coctails were quite delicious and beautiful!
Great server and the food is amazing, the cucumber sparkling water is the best.
Dirt Candy is incredible; it's one of the few higher-end restaurants I frequent that never disappoints -- no matter how high my expectations. I miss the a la carte menu, but the creativity of many of the tasting menu dishes keeps me coming back and makes it exciting to bring friends.
inventive and exciting - best food we had in a long while. would definitely return. how does she do it? also love the focus on women vintners
I'm not exaggerating when I say that my dinner at Dirt Candy was the absolute best meal I've ever had in my life. Period.
We are vegans who are accustomed to eating and cooking excellent food and, unfortunately, the food at Dirt Candy was disappointing. We had the five-course prix fixe menu. In our first course appetizer, my husband pulled out a piece of wilted lettuce with holes in it and frowned. A bad omen. It almost got better when we were served a creative mushroom pate dish next (the only good part of the savory dishes). Then we had a disappointing "broccoli hotdog," which was a broccoli spear with relish in a hotdog bun--the broccoli spear appeared grey on top and seemed to be flavored with liquid smoke, gross. Then we had over-salted Brussels sprouts served with toppings and lettuce as "tacos." The dishes seemed like they were randomly chosen by a child. There was no theme, aside from vaguely being about vegetables. The dishes did not complement each other. The parsnip cake dessert and country bread was good though. The service was excellent; we felt pampered and well-cared for from the moment we were greeted. We used to like Dirt Candy, but it seems like it has lost the inventiveness and flair that once won us over, and we won't be back.
One of the worst food I've ever had. I did the 5-course meal and the only thing my date and I liked was the first course (Korean BBQ) and dessert.
We did not finish one course. It was inedible.
Excellent service, welcoming ambience
Our reservation at Dirt Candy was for my birthday, so I had been looking forward to it for weeks. My husband and I purchased the 9 course meal. Of the 9 courses, only one item was truly spectacular - the smoked Korean fried broccoli. Otherwise, the dishes were overthought. I like the idea of focusing on a single vegetable and letting it shine as much as the next person but the execution was off the mark. Often flavor and diner experience were sacrificed for presentation.
Overall, I felt the meal was severely lacking in value (i.e., I would sooner go to a cheaper place more frequently than to Dirt Candy again), but the service was excellent. I would not recommend this restaurant to peers unless they were true lovers of artistic vegan food exhibition.
We ordered 8 course meals all were very small but it was coming and coming. Our dinner took us 3 hours, what is non bad, but we had to order a lot of wine to accompany all that food. The check was 400$ for 3 ppl. (Don’t think that we were drinking smth outstanding, the minimum price for 1 drink is 15$)
I didn’t know vegetables could taste so good. The food was phenomenal. We ordered the 5 course vegetable patch and it was more than enough food. Bottles of wine are reasonably priced. Service is outstanding.
This is my hands down favorite restaurant in the world! Go there!!
Quite possibly the best meal we’ve ever had.
My husband came the first time with a gift certificate that was a wedding present. We went back last week for our 2nd anniversary and they had switched to a tasting menu. Less choice, but equally delicious. We'd gladly go back, but probably will have to wait for a special occasion given the price tag.
We loved EVERYTHING about this restaurant. The quality of food, presentation, service, ambiance were A-1++. What really struck us, too, was the calm and joyful vibe from all the employees. We thought the price of the prix fixe was very fair - almost a bargain for what you get. Can't wait to go back xoxo
It was AWESOME!! Such a delightful dining experience! Can’t wait to return. Wicked good!
We each ordered the 5 course pre-fixe. It was great but too much food for us. Next time, I would sit at the bar and order off the a la carte menu. Very nice vibe, friendly and warm staff.
