I'm so torn on this place. The restaurant is beautiful. It's really well done and HUGE. We were seated upstairs and were greeted promptly by our waiter, Jason. The menu was simple and VERY pricey for Ambler. The 12oz. strip steak special was $50! This is not Barclay Prime people.
So Jason was very pleasant, however our service was SO slow. Our dinner, which was not a complicated order, took nearly 3 hours from start to finish. He didn't refill our water. I asked and he never came back so I had to track down another waitress to have her fill our glasses. He would disappear for long stretches. Our appetizers- soup, fries and hummus, took almost 40 minutes to arrive and then our dinner was almost another 40 minutes after that. Honestly, by the time it arrived I wasn't hungry anymore. It was almost 9:30 and we got there at 7! I'm all for leisurely dining, but this was just insane. That said, all the food was delicious, if not overpriced. It was well-cooked, well-seasoned, and beautiful in presentation. I'd go back again but if I have another slow dinner I wouldn't go back.
We shared a few small plates and a pizza. Our waiter Jason was friendly and informative. Actually encouraged us to share so we could sample the menu. Also put the order in so everything didn't all come out at the same time. It was a relaxing evening, and we were not rushed at all.
Our go-to for "real dining out." We're regulars, but we go to several other nearby places when we don't feel like cooking, however, we go here when we want to feel like adults. We ask for a particular server, the manager greets us, the bartender knows I don't like those big ice cubes - that sort of thing. It's good to be a local at a terrific local place. The menu is relatively small but wonderfully diverse and always has several interesting entrees that I would never attempt at home and makes dining out interesting. We've had some superb meals in Philly but also our share of "eh". . . not so at Dettera. Never had anything but a good time and an excellent meal.
Very mediocre meal to say the least. Poor meat quality. Salad swimming in dressing. Won't go back
We've been there two times and both times, Michael has been our waiter. He is extremely professional and a very confident and excellent at his job. The food there is exceptional and it was a real treat to eat there Saturday night.
Great with a movie
Our soup was excellent.i was excited to try the pizza and it was average at best.
Creative chef. Always the best quality ingredients and freshness.
Great dining. Small plate selection terrific idea...can sample variety of tasty entrees. Going back next week.
Great wine selection, cheese board was exceptional. Cauliflower soup was a highlight. Service was very prompt without being intrusive.
Mushroom toast, cacio e Pepe & cauliflower side with the beaujolais wine recommendation were awesome !!
Phenomenal. Dettera never disappoints.
Amazingly crispy duck cooked to perfection, tender escargot, and amazing house-made pasta are just a few notable dishes we had last night. I'm getting hungry again writing this review! Go for the food, stay for the wine. They have great options for everyone, my wife loved the charred cauliflower entree.
At first glance, the wine list can be intimidating, but our knowledgeable server Mike was there to describe certain varieties and make recommendations.
This is not our first nor our last time visiting Deterra, the menu is always changing and makes every experience interesting and original.
Great food and amazing service. This will definitely be a place that we go to frequently!
Little disappointed with the valentine dinner. We had filet mingon was more like prime rib and the quail was dry. Seated by the bar rather than the window... could have been better seated...
Great cocktails, wine selection & food. This was our first time here, but it won't be our last!
I had not been to the restaurant since they changed it. I actually preferred the older menu. My husband and I love the mushroom pasta, and I think the short rib pasta. I ordered the tagliatelle pasta but it didn’t have anything in it, so it wasn’t as good as it could have been.
Food and service were outstanding! I loved the atmosphere and it wasn't too loud.
The food was great but the service was terrible! For the price I will not be returning.
Good food but so so service. I would go back for the food and wine list.
The food was unique and delicious! We really enjoyed our meal
Always a good meal.
Excellent food but a little pricey for the portion size. Small restaurant but beautiful and romantic inside. Nice for special occasion and bar is excellent for Happy Hour. Extensive Wine list, Service was slow but waitress was pleasant. Beet Salad was amazing. Lemon Crème Brulee & Chocolate Flourless Torte were delicious. Menu needs to have more options.
We were for restaurant week and opted to try the wine pairing menu with our dinner. It was truly incredible! Each of the courses had such unique delicious flavor and the service was excellent! We will definitely be back!
Awesome from the drinks to the main course. Also love that they have small and large sized portions
Great food, great service, but small portions for the price.
The place has a comfortable decor and is quite welcoming although very loud. Hard to hear each other at times. The food was meh. The octopus appetizer was overtaken by the dressing, the risotto was too salty and went uneaten, the ravioli noodle was tough. To top it all off, for a wine bar, we found it unusual that a red wine was served in a white wine glass.
Sorry to say that we will likely not return.
Great food, service and atmosphere. The oysters were uniquely prepared. The portion sizes are not large but a good size. A little on the pricey side but worth it.
Another terrific meal at Dettera. Always fantastic drink selection, friendly and knowledgeable service, and creative food. Our current not-to-be-missed dishes are the cacio e pepe, the smoked salmon, and the shrimp risotto.
Great placre. Great wine and food. Excellent wine selection! Service is superb. Great date night for us.
Bulleit Rye Old Fashion was awesome. The food was good with and friendly staff. We sat upstairs and enjoyed a nice meal in an upscale casual environment.
Tasty pastas and soups. Decent wine selection. A bit loud on a Friday night. Will return as it’s convenient location for before or after films.
Great night, Dettera has it all, great drink selection, food and atmosphere were terrific... would highly recommend!
Staff was friendly, menu was interesting. Our food was very good overall. I enjoyed the Shrimp risotto, the squash ravioli with pork, and the Brussels sprouts. The desserts were quite good.
One negative. I didn't enjoy the kiss oysters, which was my fault. I enjoy raw oysters and although the lime ice seemed like a good idea, it did nothing to improve the taste but rather masked their flavor plus the oysters were quite small. I should have ordered plain raw oysters, not tricked up, and maybe they would have even been a good size.
Service was OK, I like it that the runners always brought all the food out at once. Our waiter was very pleasant and tried very hard but he forgot about us a couple of times during the meal, no one came by to refill water, or ask about more wine during the meal, and our he was not as knowledgeable about the menu as he should have been. My sense was he had too many tables to cover, or maybe he was new.
We enjoyed our experience and would recommend to our friends.
Everything about Dettera looks good on paper. The ambiance and setting was also quite enjoyable. The prices weren’t bad, portions reasonable. The only thing we didn’t like was the food! When you’re going out to a restaurant that’s really the key feature, no matter if the service and setting was pleasant.
We ate at Deterra Restaurant for our Anniversary and my birthday. Service and food are always outstanding! Always something new on the menu to try. Interesting and delicious food options. The wine tasting paired with the food menu is outstanding.
The total meal was very good, wine list was special. Customer Service was not up to par. Reservations were set & taken but we still had to wait an additional 30 to 45 mins. The worst part of going out is making a reservation and not having the restaurant honor it
We have always loved it there but the service at 7:30 pm on New Years eve was awful. They brought the wrong foods 3 times and they did not apologize. I could not get the waiters attention to tell him they gave me the wrong entree, so I just ate it. Should have gone to the byob next door. My husbands duck breast was over cooked. They steak a friend had was very very tough. I was embarrassed I recommended them.
New Year’s Eve. The pris fixe menu was superb. There were 3 in our party and we ordered different items for 3 is the 4 courses so we were able to share and sample and all were perfection.
Took my son who had not yet been to Dettera with us. Since he loves octopus, we had to order that. The flavor was great even though the octopus was a touch dry. We had the tuna tartar and found it to be too bland. Nice presentation but lacked something. We shared the duck breast over barley and it was perfect! Very nice size portion, perfectly cooked, great flavor and the barley risotto had great texture and flavor! We didn't order them but they have the BEST french fries!
Amazingly fresh Delaware bay oysters on special and we both had the special steak. Mine was undercooked but they brought it back perfect with a brand new plate.
My only complaint there is that at 8 pm for dining I wish the lights were a bit lower for more ambiance. We had pin lights glaring down on our faces. Ask the waiter if the lights could be dimmed but it fusing happen.
