Merging progressive American cuisine with wine bar chic in a beautifully restored, historic building offering upscale casual dining on an outside deck with a brick fireplace, a first floor dining level open to a curving black granite bar with over-sized round banquettes. The second floor dining room offers a relaxed atmosphere with pillow filled banquettes, a romantic fireplace, and a beautiful view of the Ambler theater. Dettera Restaurant & Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
Staff was friendly, menu was interesting. Our food was very good overall. I enjoyed the Shrimp risotto, the squash ravioli with pork, and the Brussels sprouts. The desserts were quite good.
One negative. I didn't enjoy the kiss oysters, which was my fault. I enjoy raw oysters and although the lime ice seemed like a good idea, it did nothing to improve the taste but rather masked their flavor plus the oysters were quite small. I should have ordered plain raw oysters, not tricked up, and maybe they would have even been a good size.
Service was OK, I like it that the runners always brought all the food out at once. Our waiter was very pleasant and tried very hard but he forgot about us a couple of times during the meal, no one came by to refill water, or ask about more wine during the meal, and our he was not as knowledgeable about the menu as he should have been. My sense was he had too many tables to cover, or maybe he was new.
We enjoyed our experience and would recommend to our friends.
Everything about Dettera looks good on paper. The ambiance and setting was also quite enjoyable. The prices weren’t bad, portions reasonable. The only thing we didn’t like was the food! When you’re going out to a restaurant that’s really the key feature, no matter if the service and setting was pleasant.
The total meal was very good, wine list was special. Customer Service was not up to par. Reservations were set & taken but we still had to wait an additional 30 to 45 mins. The worst part of going out is making a reservation and not having the restaurant honor it
We have always loved it there but the service at 7:30 pm on New Years eve was awful. They brought the wrong foods 3 times and they did not apologize. I could not get the waiters attention to tell him they gave me the wrong entree, so I just ate it. Should have gone to the byob next door. My husbands duck breast was over cooked. They steak a friend had was very very tough. I was embarrassed I recommended them.
Took my son who had not yet been to Dettera with us. Since he loves octopus, we had to order that. The flavor was great even though the octopus was a touch dry. We had the tuna tartar and found it to be too bland. Nice presentation but lacked something. We shared the duck breast over barley and it was perfect! Very nice size portion, perfectly cooked, great flavor and the barley risotto had great texture and flavor! We didn't order them but they have the BEST french fries!
Amazingly fresh Delaware bay oysters on special and we both had the special steak. Mine was undercooked but they brought it back perfect with a brand new plate.
My only complaint there is that at 8 pm for dining I wish the lights were a bit lower for more ambiance. We had pin lights glaring down on our faces. Ask the waiter if the lights could be dimmed but it fusing happen.
Our dinner at Deterra was mind-blowingly amazing! Everything exceeded our expectations, from start to finish. The food was delicious - do yourself a favor and order the Parsnip and Hazelnut Soup, and the Black Truffle Risotto, you won't be disappointed. Our server, Kenny, was really knowledgeable and funny, but never made us feel rushed. The atmosphere is fun and lively, while still allowing for quiet conversations. Chef Power and his team at Deterra really out-did themselves!
Our meals at Dettera are always outstanding. Tonight our party of three started with two unique salads and the tuna tartare. Entrees were the Amish chicken, bass in a wonderful broth and pasta with venison. We shared the chocolate pate for dessert with three forks (and an extra scoop of peanut gelato, please). We were pleased to have Michael serve our table; it’s like eating with a great friend. Thanks, Chef Jeffrey, for another wonderful meal.
Our waiter provided excellent service and was helpful and knowledgeable with selections. We were going to the theater afterward and did not need to rush within the hour we had. I had halibut and my wife had red snapper. Neither of us was disappointed in our meal.
Birthday dinner with the family at Dettera. Fist time and glad we chose this restaurant. We picked three appetizers, the tuna tartare, oysters, and the mushroom toast. Then for the entree’s, we had the surf and turf, stripped bass, and duck. Experience and expectations exceed!! The level of service is at the top. We will be back next chance we get. Every bite was perfect. Complements to the chef and kitchen staff for presentation. If you looking for an awesome meal, don’t miss a chance to eat at Dettera.
As an Ambler local, I feel so lucky to have a place like Dettera right down the street. Years ago, my husband and I ate our first meal here when we celebrated closing on our new home in town and there have been many impressive meals here since. We are both experienced and skilled home cooks so we don't eat out often. Our standards are high, and anyplace we dine at must do a better job than we could do at home ourselves. Dettera fits the bill! The seasonal menu is ambitious enough to interest sophisticated diners, but not so highbrow that others will be put off or intimidated. The wine list is ample with great choices in many price ranges and their handcrafted cocktails are delicious too. I eat mostly vegetarian with the occasional seafood dish thrown in, and some of my favorites at Dettera include the oysters, the grilled octopus appetizer (cooked perfectly, never rubbery!), any of their homemade pastas and the seasonal fish entree. In the spring, they had a trout with pea shoots that was so delicate and flavorful I still think about it. This most recent visit, I had a homemade potato gnocchi that was just perfect - not heavy at all. I also like that the pastas are offered in half portions. The octopus appetizer and a half order of gnocchi left me room for my favorite Dettera dessert: the butter cake. We brought my parents here to celebrate two birthdays and two wedding anniversaries and everyone left happy. My dad reported having the best steak EVER. Dettera is elegant inside, but you can show up casually dressed which is how we roll in my family. For 4 people who had a couple of drinks each, dinner and dessert we spent $275 including tip. My only critique is that they knew we were celebrating special occasions and we waited almost 45 minutes for our food. There was a large party clogging up the kitchen. While we were not upset, the server did not even comp us a round of drinks or dessert - just offered an apology.
We unfortunately were seated upstairs along with a wedding reception party...not a good combo for a nice meal for 2 couples. After an unpleasant dining experience, and letting the staff know of our displeasure, management made things right by us, so kudos to them for recognizing they were not up to expectations that evening for us. We've been back for happy hour, which was very good.
I would highly recommend Dettera for their creative cuisine and great service. I had an exquisite soup made with parsnips, hazelnuts, and pears along with an excellent beet salad and an entree of pesto gnocchi. They also have a good wine selection and I always have had great service.
I recommend this restaurant to my friends!
Spur of the moment impromptu dinner with my wife. Everything was fantastic. Grilled octopus was as good as it gets. Eggplant ravioli was one of the specials and scrumptious. Our server Kenneth was incredibly friendly and very helpful in assisting us with our choices!
The service was amazing--- and the food was delicious! Being gluten free and somewhat fussy about other food restrictions, I was worried that it didn't look like there were options, but they were completely willing to substitute and everything we had was so delicious! The chef is very talented. And our waitress gets an A+++.
We were slightly late for our dinner reservation, which meant we arrived after 10 o'clock, which is when the restaurant changes its menu to a more limited menu. However, because we had called to say that we would be late, they kept the kitchen open so that we were offered the full menu! This was entirely unexpected and incredibly appreciated. The manager came out several times to ensure that we were having what we wanted, and to generally check on our well-being. This restaurant was a favorite of ours before that evening, but it is now at the top of our list!
