DESTIHL-Champaign Ratings and Reviews
Best features are great selection of in-house brews an serving options. Some more unique items of recent years are gone (mussels, dishes using duck confit, and less-sweet desserts). Seems like the more interesting chef is now gone. Benches in booths are too low. Pleasant staff.
I didnt think bacon could get much better... but the beer battered bacon is incredible!! I had the skirt steak. It was cooked perfectly and was wonderfuly tender and flavorful. My wife had the sword fish. She said it was fantastic. I tried a couple different beers, all of which were wonderful. Great good! Great service!
We had a large group with some who had to leave early. Our server did an outstanding job of taking care of everyone's needs, got the order right, delivered the meals for those who had to leave early, and the food was delicious. Everyone was happy with their food and had a good time. I was impressed!
I choose Destihl mostly because of the menu. I have one vegetarian and one vegan in the family. They were both able to pick a meal without just getting a salad. I was also impressed with a call from the restaurant verifying that we would be coming and if there were any special needs. I asked about any other options for the vegan and the manager knew his menu and what could be converted to a vegan dish. That was a bonus. The different beer sample was fun for those in my party that like beer. I would go back and recommend other.
Chicken pesto sandwich and Thai pork pizza were both excellent. Served quickly, hot and fresh tasting. Wait staff found just the right attention level, always available but not overbearing. Can't wait to go back after work so that I can catch up on Destihl's fine selection of microbrews.
We were one of the first to arrive when they opened. All but one table was open and they seated us right by the entry in the flow of traffic. Twice I got bumped by their wait staff but we could hear the conversation at the hostess table. I asked to be moved and they were accomendating. Much nicer location and brighter to. Not sure if we just were not hungry but it seemed nothing on the menu appealed to the 4 of us.
Have been here before and have had better experience. Was there at opening, got seated promptly and server took our order after a few minutes, then we waited for 45 minutes for our food to come out - and the restaurant was not crowded. I am vegetarian and asked for the bacon off my salad, but it came with it on anyway. Food is good but this time the service left something to be desired.
We were down in Champaign for U of I's Mom's Weekend. We met with some friends for brunch on Saturday and decided to give this place a chance. We had heard both good and bad things about it but when looking at the menu we saw the variety would please everyone's palate. The food and the service could not be better!!! I would rate this place high on my list of places to eat and would recommend it for anyone visiting Champaign.
We joined some old neighbors for dinner and the atmosphere was great for our little reunion. The food was good but the service from our wait person was outstanding - very attentive and friendly. The highlight of the meal was the carrot cake. They call it a slice but its closer to 1/4th a cake. Three of us shared one slice and it was more than enough!
I had dined at the Destihl in Normal several times, and was pleased to see they had one in Champaign-urbana. In my 4-day visit to Champaign I managed to eat at Destihl twice. Well thought-out food, expertly prepared and presented, great service, and quality brews to match. What is not to like? Highly recommended!
On the front of the menu it states "Support Flavor, Boycott Bland" which is ironic because their food is incredibly bland. This is the third time I have been here and every time I am willing to give them another chance, just to be disappointed time and time again. First time I had the pesto chicken, which was essentially dry chicken with green water. Second time I had a sirloin which wasn't necessarily bad, but it was not worth the cost. This most recent time I had squash noodles with cashew cream sauce, and the flavor was nonexistent and the squash noodles were subpar.
Second trip to Destihl did not disappoint. Fantastic server who made great recommendations for beers to try. With our Open Table reservation, we walked right in and were seated on a Saturday night. The place was busy, but we were able to carry on a conversation without any difficulty. The bacon-wrapped dates a great blend of sweet, salty, and spicy. I had the Destihl meatloaf. The portion size was just right...a nice-sized piece of meatloaf that was not too dense or heavy on the stomach. Many of the desserts sounded great, but we went with the smores. Serving size was perfect for two.
I ordered the korean chicken. It was incredibly oversalted, it don't mean a little too much. I mean NUKE your palette salty. It was also terribly overcooked. I want my chicken cooked through of course, crispy skin is a good thing. but when the flesh is crunchy down to the bone you've taken it too far. And no that is not an exaggeration.
Most and some items had a spice ingredient including jalapeños, peppercorns and others. If you are not into that, where you like to season your food and not others, review the menu prior to going.
Service was awful. We ate at the bar. The bartenders were very good at getting server drinks out, but we had to ask for a refill every time we wanted a beer, water or something else. Although drinks and bar service came slow, they sure had our check ready to go in a heart beat.
We felt special. Not going back.
The food was amazing, the beer even more so! We enjoyed the service, they were quick, polite, and on top of everything. I had the Gaucho Skirt Steak and it was perfectly cooked to order and seasoned well! My wife had the Weissenhiemer Chicken and said it was the most tender and moist chicken she had ever had before.
The appetizers were great, we had beer batter bacon (I know right) and the lamb meatballs...those could have been a little bigger if you ask me, but the taste was great!
Go and enjoy...we know we will again!
My wife and I came here for our 'special occasion' dinner. Our appetizer, battered & fried asparagus, was very good. Our 2nd course, we split a Ceasar Salad with fried egg special and it was delightful. She had the Lobster Tail special, I had the Flat Iron; both of us were very happy with our entree (we had to wait a little longer for our 3rd course to arrive than we would have liked). For dessert we shared the Banana Creme Pie, which we devoured very quickly! I'd definitely recommend this place to have a nice dinner out (especially if you like to have a beer with your meal). Make reservations! We made reservations and sat down immediately once getting there; as we left, we heard the wait for a table as 60-90 minutes!
Desthil was very accommodating to my last minute reservation time change. I have been to Destihl less than a handful of times, but every time the food was fantastic and the drinks were fantastic. I absolutely consider Destihl one of the best places to have a romantic night out but also a great place to go to with friends.
The restaurant's sole benefit is that the beer selection is better than you would find at any other generic American-style restaurant. Otherwise, the food is uninspired and bland, particularly for the price. If you're looking for a narrower but tastier selection at a similar price, you should go to Big Grove (right across the street), which also uses local foods. Also, the interior decoration was bizarre and the arrangement of non-booth tables gives a cafeteria feel.
Our reservation for Valentine's Day was at 6:45. We walked in the door at that time and were seated immediately (walking past multiple people waiting). We had plenty of time to look over the menu. The food was excellent, starting with the crab croquettes as an appetizer from their special menu for the night and then the main courses.
