Good service and cute place. Food is very average. Lacking in flavor And a little bland.
It was ok. There was a large party that was extremely loud but our only other option was the high tops since the patio was closed. The food was similar to other tapas places I’ve been but I’ve had much better. The dessert was probably the best part. I would go back for a drink and a quick app but not for dinner again.
We never even got seated despite making a reservation. The restaurant was totally unprepared for the change in weather. Apparently many diners wanted to eat inside that had requested an outdoor table. We had made a reservation for inside. When we got there they told us to sit outside on the terrace (all alone) and wouldn't accommodate our reservation. We will never go back and were disappointed on how we were treated.
good Spanish originals, always loud but service was a bit crazy this weekend.
We got tapas and dessert. 5 out of 7 of the dishes were absolutely delicious, the other 2 (pan con tomate and abuela's cake) were just so-so--pretty good percentage of yummy stuff!! Also the coffee was great, which sealed the deal for us. Service was prompt and courteous. Atmosphere was nice, just wish we could've sat outside! Will definitely come back and recommend to friends.
Service lacked despite it being fairly slow prior to peak dinner rush. One of a handful of tables sat, and despite requesting outdoor seating we were refused - with only 3 tables taken outdoors. Service slow throughout and food was fair taste for typical downtown Princeton prices. We had high expectations, but we're let down and unfortunately won't be back.
Excellent food, excellent service, limited free parking in the back
Delicious delicious delicious. Service was great. Food tasty. Will be back.
Fantastic food and wonderful ambiance.
We love tapas.. we drive to Philly to eat at Amada's every chance we get.. wanted to try a local place. The food is amazing. A little pricey for the size of the plates but very good. Would love to see this "bring your own"allow alcohol (spirits) there are people who do not drink wine and would like to enjoy a cocktail with dinner, or top off a meal with a nice after dinner drink with dessert. Please consider this! Otherwise overall experience very nice.
My family and I dined at Despana on 3/10. We had a reservation and were immediately seated. We were greeted by a very pleasant server and she was knowledgeable of the menu and attentive throughout our stay. We ordered several tapas and paella. All were very good and exceptionally so was the eggplant with manchego and pork meatballs. We all agreed that the salt level needs to be taken down a couple notches and this was especially so with the garlic shrimp. It would have been nice if the kitchen had spaced out the timing of the tapas rather than bringing them mostly all at once. It felt rushed. Overall it was a good dining experience. It was our first visit and probably not our last.
We have been to the same establishment before and the food was great at that time that is why the second visit. This time the food was not that great . Server was great
Everything was great, especially the Sangria and Cheese/Meat Platter. Will definitely go back, to try the Paella which looked awesome!
The food was very good and the pitcher of sangria worked well. The place was quiet mainly because there where only three parties including us.
The food was great as was the service. The tapas are amazing and the Paella was delicious. The only negative is the chairs are metal and can be very uncomfortable after 2 hours sitting on them. It was a Saturday night so the noise level was high but not so bad that you couldn’t converse.
We enjoyed our dinner at Despana. The tapas were varied and good as was the paella. Service was very friendly and attentive. The only complaint is that the noise level was very high and it was difficult to hold a conversation.
A tasty treat in the heart of Princeton with authentic Spanish cuisine by Chef Jose. The grilled calamari and bacalao are superb and the abuella tarta for dessert is a must have.
I love Despana and Valentine’s Day was a wonderful night to go there. The food is always delish. The hostess that night was the chef’s wife and she is delightful and fun! My husband and I really enjoyed ourselves.
Went for lunch. Despite telling server we had a reservation for 2 on open table, he made us sit on the outside of main dining area on upper level, saying the other area was reserved.tho it was completely empty and remained empty till we left. Another couple cm in later wth out resvn and they were seated inside. Server more interested in watching soccer match.
Paella was good
Nice place good food.
Great restaurant. Amazing food, and terrific service. Love the apps all the way to the paella!
Grateful they now serve sangria! :-)
Food is good, we love eating tapas. It is comparable to tapas in Spain. Table and chairs are for 2 are okay, but not spacious. We enjoy very much going here.
Not Despaña’s fault, but the quality of the food deserves a full bar. This stuff is great! We plan to return when the weather is warm in order to try out the outdoor balcony.
Interesting Tapas menu with a modern flair. Standard offerings coupl;ed with some good vegetarian options as well. Can BYOB or order a house wine/sangria.
We enjoyed this visit a lot more than a previous indoor dining experience;
noise level was happily less; food much more choice and excellent tapas.
Noise was unbearable. Food did not match menu description. Too much vinegar. Some dishes excellent. Tapas too large and too expensive; impossible to make a meal of 2 or 3, as in Spain
Entree was mediocre. Going to stay with tapas and paella
So, I booked this for New Years Eve thinking it would be different. First, the chairs are extremely uncomfortable. Due to our service we were there 3 hours and I will say not wanting to sit on a hard metal
Chair again. Our waitress was extremely friendly, but it was I think her first night. She didn’t know the food, couldn’t explain the vegetables and was unable to understand that we wanted tapas then salad then dinner. So, we finally just told her to send all the apps and salad at once. Well, I suppose the kitchen didn’t get the memo because we got everything at once. Some tapas came first... but the rest & salads came out with dinner. Then the kitchen made a mistake with one of the entrees. We were told by the manager sorry and she walked off. It was corrected but they seemed not not really be sorry. It’s a bring your own and I can only drink water, for some reason the waitress would only fill
The glass a little more than half full. She did refill often, however I had to drink the water of others at my table. I have no idea why everything took so long, people came after us and were leaving before us. If you go and a family decides to bring their loud children it will echo. But that’s not the restaurants fault. Food is pretty good. Salads are way over priced so unless you’re like me and have dietary restrictions don’t order a salad. I did have a chicken kabob and it’s good. The others enjoyed their paella’s someone ordered the filet and pretty much go to Witherspoon or Ruth’s Chris for that. We have had Better Spanish food in Newark, and Perth Amboy, But this one is just OK. I would only go back if someone was having a group there.
Friendly service, good food and conveniently located in Princeton's "downtown" Nassau Street area. Plates are sharable and reasonably priced. A nice place to get together with friends.
Great food. Great service.
Overall our dinner was good. The paella was excellent. We started with a few tapas which were good, but one we got (Tuna Tar Tar) tasted very fishy and seemed off. Me and my husband eat fish and sushi all the time and the color of this and the taste just wasn’t right. We would take a bite that was fine and then another bite was fishy. We didn’t even eat 1/2 of it and told our server. At the end they just took the dessert off and not the tuna Tar Tar which didn’t seem right to us. I don’t know if I would be back to eat here just because of that. Otherwise everything g was good.
As always the food was delicious. The only challenge was that the room was uncomfortably warm.
To start we had the grilled octopus, fried potatoes with Aioli Sauce and one of the Iberico meats. To share the Paella Marinera. And to wash that all down a red Sangria.
Everything was AMAZING! Service was fast, attentive and very sweet.
Definitely coming back!
Food was brought to table quickly after order. Portions were generous. Service was attentive and friendly.
BYOB! Good but not spectacularly so. Would recommend as a place for Spanish charcuterie
(Spanish Jambon and cheese.) We had the paella with seafood and black squid ink rice...shrimp were tiny, scallops overcooked to mushiness, but calamari/squid were plentiful and delicious.
Our waiter was very accomodating. It was a pleasurable dining experience.
recommend better bread
food is inconsistent. Sometimes I really like it and sometimes I am not sure. But overly excellent experience and will definitely come back.
Great food! Great service!
Always a favorite, a little disappointed that the crocettas were changed. They’re a lot smaller, you get only four and the price is the same. They do tend to change up their tapas without mentioning it in the menu so you don’t really know what could come out. I would recommend they change a few things back to the originals. They haven’t added any value to the price.
