Derek's, in Bradenton, is renowned for a modern take on Cajun and Creole cuisine, adding a Mediterranean twist to classic southern dishes in its welcoming restaurant. Tapas dishes, such as the PEI mussels with andouille sausage, chickpeas and sweet peppers and the smoked pulled pork flatbread with peach barbecue sauce and farmers cheese, make tasty and sharable starts. Some of Derek's' specialty entrée dishes include the voodoo crawfish linguini with creole tomato sauce, the Ashley Farms chicken with bacon braised collards and roasted tomato bread pudding and the cornmeal crusted red snapper with remoulade, dirty rice and watercress, all of which are crafted with local ingredients.
Derek's' homemade desserts are just as comforting and outrageous as the entrées, including the bread pudding beignet stuffed with banana custard or the dark and stormy trifle with ginger curd, caramelized pineapple and coconut crumble.
Closed and good riddance; your stupid site still took the Rez and there we were, standing in front of a closed restaurant on a Friday night😑
Unfortunately open table took the booking and confirmed it, but we travelled 30 minutes to find it closed.
birthday dinner with reservation requesting nice table, greeted and basically told to sit anywhere, place was practically empty. Waiter was cordial but service was excruciatingly slow given there were few people there.
Watched a couple come in and ignored at the door, ultimately left.
We had high hopes as the place was highly recommended, but sadly disappointing.
Won't be rushing back!
Never disappoints. Our go to place with friends. Food is always good and not expensive. Wait staff is always friendly and accommodating.
Moved here from New York three years ago and you were recommended to me by several chefs. Also so great right ups in the local newspapers. I was in the food business for 31 years I was looking forward to a great meal. I am gluten-free that really looked good as well.
My wife's meal was excellent. My appetizer and entrée or extremely disappointing.
We were in Bradenton for a track meet and used open table to find a restaurant near IMG. From start to finish, we enjoyed everything about this place. Our waiter was excellent and guided us to choose delicious entrees. The pizza that we had as an appetizer was so good. Then Four of us had short ribs and the rest had blackened salmon. Both were so tasty. Thank you, Derek's. What a pleasant surprise!
I have been to Derek's multiple times and been satisfied. We went on a Monday night for my husband's birthday and the biscuits came out burnt TWICE and the entree was not warm. Service was also poor. Don't go on a Monday!
The gumbo I started with was excellent, so we were very optimistic about the rest of the meal. This was especially true since we had meant to come to Derek's for years but just never got around to it. Unfortunately the rest of the meal lacked flavor. When one goes to a restaurant with cajun dishes and orders vodoo crawfish made with andoullie sausage one does not expect a rather bland dish--which is what it was. My wife's shimp with pasta was equally unimpressive. It's a shame that the food couldn't match either our high expectations or the excellent service by our waiter;Ron.
The cuisine is very imaginative. Some might say "too imaginative", but what the chef prepares is always dynamite.
Dereks does not offer a tourist type menu, far from it. A menu which reflects the region, not too extensive but witha clever assortment of dishes to tempt everybody. Our food was freshly cooked, well presented, and very well served. Waiting staff were attentive wthout being intrusive. An excellent venue.
Nice atmosphere and food was good. Portions a little small but tasted good
Had a 6pm reservation..the restaurant was empty & we were shown to the WORST table in the house.. we refused to sit there..this table was not used until no other tables were available.. had to ask for a 2nd glass of lemonade & there was a charge..server never checked on us..not a friendly environment..
Everything on the menu is delicious! The staff is courteous and attentive.
What a disappointing experience to dine at Derek's last Saturday eve with our houseguests from Germany. We have dined at Derek's many times in the past and considered it one of Bradenton's best! The menu was innovative, the staff was friendly and efficient, the food well prepared and the service good. All that has changed. We were surprised to find tables available on a Saturday night at 15 minute intervals from 6:00 pm to 7:30. The wait staff was understaffed, and we had long waits between courses. I had the sword fish special, fish was good but presentation lacking (fish looked like two hot dogs and plate was piled with french fries . . . a little order of fries goes a long way). We have spoken to others - year round residents as we are - who used to frequent Derek's, but no longer. . This used to be a fine restaurant. What a sad state of affairs for dining in Bradenton! Derek, what has happened?
This is not an inexpensive restaurant, and at present there is no reason to pay the price.
Great food and loved our server just ended up in a booth quite close to someone we didn't know.
Our reservation was at 6:30 on a Thursday. Kind of empty then but filled up shortly after. Food was great. I had the fish tacos. Disappointed they didn't have mixed cocktails.
I was very disappointed with service and food. There was one waitress with three tables. I took us over an hour for five sandwiches. When the food finally came, they missed my cup of gumbo. In addition, the hamburgers and fish tacos were way overdone.
Shrimp and grits were delicious !
Fish tacos were great.
Shrimp PO boy was tasty as are the fries.
It is hard to find a restaurant that everyone in the family enjoys. The atmosphere is wonderful and the staff is very attentive. Wonderful experience.
The menu on both occasions I've dined here can best be described as atypical of local fare. A combination of continental and New Orleans style dishes. Fish and produce are very fresh. Portions are comfortably sized leaving room for dessert. Nice wine list.
Good gluten free options. Healthy and delicious choices available. Nice atmosphere.
We dined at Derek's with friends on a recent Friday (it was the husband's birthday)and had a fairly good meal. My husband and I have eaten at Derek's many times, especially when the restaurant was on Central Avenue in the Rosemary District in Sarasota. I think the food was actually better when Derek was in that location. He has changed up his menu a bit to "fit" the Bradenton dining scene, and while it is good, it was quite as creative as we remember from before. We were very, very disappointed to be served a type of biscuit instead of the the yummy little gougeres. The biscuits were flavorful but dry. My kale salad was actually arugula (which was fine with me, though not accurate with the menu listing), and my salmon was flavorful and well-cooked. My husband and a friend had the short ribs, usually very dependably good. They were tasty but the presentation was a bit...messy. The other husband had the seafood muddle which he enjoyed. I enjoyed the Mixon ice cream for dessert, while my husband had the banana beignets (he loves anything with bananas!) and the other wife had the mousse, which she did not particularly like because of the cookie crumbles. Our waitperson was efficient but did not really give us any interesting information about the food, aside from reading what the specials were. She may have been new; that would explain her reticence. She did do a good job of waiting on us. Overall, our dining experience was good, but not great.
Great local place for lunch, prices were good for portion size. Looking forward on going again this coming week.
Great food ,nice atmosphere, have had better service ..waitress was not very friendly
Great food and atmosphere, if you're looking for someplace different in the area this is the place.
Delicious food offerings.
Atmosphere was better when they dimmed the lights. The food was very good and also our server was attentive! We would definitely go again! Green tomatoes were excellent as well as the Pork and beef brisket and seafood muddle!
After looking forward to Derek's following their move from Sarasota, we were greatly disappointed. The service was slow and indifferent and mistakes were made on two of the three items ordered (didn't bring what was ordered). The food, once delivered correctly, was average at best. Less salt would have improved it.
The thing that most stands out about our Saturday evening dinner here (we had a 7:30 reservation and were seated promptly) was that it took 15 minutes for our waiter came over to our table after we sat down---- to tell us that he was too busy serving other people and that he would come back soon. Seven minutes later we hailed over the hostess as she walked by and asked for water. Our waiter finally showed up a few minutes later to serve the water. He tried to get away, but we asked him to take out drink order. We finally got to order our food sometime after that. And it was good, but way over- rated. And it took the kitchen 45 minutes to tell my husband that the pork shank he ordered was unavailable because they had sold out. 45 minutes AFTER he ordered. Really?? They didn't know before that? We won't be back. Ever.
Great wine selection. Great ambiance. Great experience.
Cheddar Biscuits great! Entrees and service good. Ambiance not so good. Read that this was a gourmet dining place but when you walk in it looks and feels like a lunch time sandwich shop!
The ambience isn't right. Tables are too close together and lighting is too bright. The bread / rolls were tasteless. The pasta was too sweet.
The restaurant was great. The food was average we had the chicken breast which was bland. Our friends had the gumbo which was very good and the fish tacos which were average. It was a great place to take out of towners for the ambience.
Staff and chefs very knowledgeable in preparation and importance of food being gluten-free with zero cross-contamination. The service and attention to detail could use improvement for the prices charged by this restuarant. One of our diners ordered a meal with french fries and received mashed potatoes. The situation was corrected. My meal had cold mashed potatoes served, The waiter was very polite and knowledgable but did not actually serve our meals, for a restaurant at this price range one could expect that the waiter would verify each diner's meal for quality and accuracy before having it served. Overall the food was good but not at the outstanding level and only average for the prices charged.
We at dinner on a Friday night and the kitchen was a little slow. Three of our dishes were definite hits: the chicken & andouille gumbo, the fried green tomatoes and the Seafood Muddle. The 4th item, the BBQ Shrimp was less successful; less buttery and spicy than the usual New Orleans dish. Cheddar biscuits were a plus. Wines were on the high side, craft beer was more reasonable. The chocolate mousse dessert was heavenly.
The Crab mac and cheese had no noticeable crab, just a fishy taste.
Flat bread was very good but cool. It took a long time to get wait person's attention.
The staff, especially the hostess, need better training and always be looking for patrons
that are obviously trying to get their attention.
Food is prepared with a great Cajun influence. Subtle but makes the palate tingle
Creative food choices keep us coming back for more!
A friend and I had dinner here , it was the first time for both of us. The atmosphere was nice, the food was great. I will definitely come back with my husband
The food here is really good and the portions are large. There is something on the menu at Derek's that will satisfy anybodies taste buds. Not fancy but a more casual dining experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves food.
