Der Fondue Chessel Ratings and Reviews
The gondola rides, view, and venue were truly amazing. Service was good throughout the ride up and during dinner with helpful lift operators, even a much needed blanket. My only issue was with the very heavy use of rosemary across most of the main course items, from the potatoes and sausage on the side - to the beaf and chicken that you grill at the table. Several in our dining party (all adults) found the rosemary to be overwhelming. Everything else was delicious!
I took my son for a fun experience per recommendation. The concept was neat but the food was mediocre and wasnt worth thr amount spent. We could've enjoyed a very nice steak dinner for this price. Service was slow and we waited 10-15min per course. The whole experience took over 3 hours for 2 people and we brought half home. Meat was flavorful but tough.
The ride up to the restaurant on two gondolas was great. Blankets are provided, it's quiet and dark. Our kids loved the cooking their own meat. The standard chicken and steak were both excellent. We also added on shrimp which was good. Wagyu tri tip didn't taste all that different from the standard steak. Would have like cheese course to be a little larger. Dessert, on the other hand, was more than enough. We had the flaming turtle which was a lot of fun and quite delicious. Live music and chicken dance were fun too. It's expensive, but it's an experience. We are very glad we went.
We went out to celebrate my husbands birthday with a group of friends. I was told by the manager we can stay until 11. Yet from 9pm the staff was pretty much rushing us out. The instructions for fondue were not provided so we waited with platters of stuff not knowing what to do. The server offended my husband, who is from Argentina, saying that all the busboys there are from Argentina that’s why they don’t know what their doing. Obviously she had no way of knowing where he’s from, but innapropriate comment. I was told by the manager that they have a special dessert for the birthday person, yet we never received it. The staff was literally vacuuming next to us while we were still eating. The best part was the live band consisting of accordion, banjo and a bass and the costumes were cool. Food was ok, not worth 200$ per couple.
The “oompah” band that strolled from table to table was a great addition to the ambience of a true Fondue restaurant. Loved the huge fireplace! A very fun trip by Gondola, especially at night, and the blankets the lift operators provided were very much appreciated! We would definitely go again!
How often do you get to ride a gondola (or 2) to the top of a mountain and have an awesome fondue dinner? If you're my family, not very often! It was a great experience. Sure, it's pricey, but it's also different, and tasty, and fun. And so much food! My family, including 2 almost adult kids, loved it. Der Fondue was very good about catering to my vegetarian daughter as well as the rest of us meat-eaters. Very memorable evening, in a good way!
We had reservations. We were seated on time. 2 hours later we still hadn’t gotten all of the courses of our meal. The burner they put the meat on fell over. They had to replace the burner and the meat. We were so frustrated we didn’t even stay for dessert. We weren’t the only ones who had problems that night. The manager tried to make it right but it was a bad experience. For the money I definitely would NOT recommend!
This is a special experience if you are in the Keystone, Breckenridge, Silverthorne or Dillon area.
Be prepared to take the gondola, walk a short distance over the snow, and then take a second gondola for a 20-minute trip each way to the restaurant to/from Keystone base village.
The visit was extremely disappointing. We have been to Fondue Chessel on three other occasions; the last being two years ago, so we knew it would be expensive. However, it has greatly declined in service, ambiance, and overall enjoyment. The amount of money spent cannot be justified. We noticed a there were no where near the amount of people in the restaurant as years past. Der Fondue is going to have to up their game if they are going to continue. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend it to anyone for any occasion.
We tried this on New Year's Eve and found it to be a fun experience! Riding the gondola without our ski gear on was a whole different experience. We dressed quite warmly but it was still chilly so bundle up! The fondue was excellent. I am a vegetarian and I thoroughly enjoyed the vegetarian option. The veggies were nicely cut and there was a wide variety. The manager on duty checked in on us several times during our meal. We also enjoyed the live music!
DerFondueChessel is an experience! So unique! Loved the fondues and loved cooking at our table. We had our young adult sons and it was special watching them cooking. We were there for New Years Eve and it delivered a very special evening. Loved the wandering musicians...they engaged the patrons. Lots of fun. Everyone who is in Keystone must go to DerFondueChessel at least once!
My family has been coming here for the past 15 years for New Year’s Eve and unfortunately quality of the dining experience has declined in recent years. I know the menu is limited by design on New Years but this year was especially disappointing. It’s still a unique evening but it’s an expensive outing for just “okay” food.
Travelling to the restaurant was the most exciting part of the evening, riding in 2 gondolas although cold, was a lot of fun! Our server, John(one of the GM's, who I believe was filling in for someone) was attentive but continually kept forgetting our requests as he was delegating. The food was excellent, however not quite enough. My husband was most looking forward to the raclette, having lived in Switzerland and we were given 4 tiny pieces of raclette cheese even though we were a party of 5. We eventually got more after we asked for the 3rd time but overall it was a fun experience.
This is the second time we’ve been to this restaurant. The value for the cost and quality of food is not what it used to be. They were out of 2 items we requested and we were at an early dinner seating. The carrots during the cheese fondue part were not fresh. You are paying $100 plus per person for crudités, ceaser salad, more chicken than sirlion and potato wedges. This is without upgrading on the items which we felt were pushed by the staff. The chocolate, what everyone waits for, was again disappointing. We asked for a little more pound cake that never came. Yes, the gondola ride and the scenic views are beautiful but you don’t need to pay the dinner prices to see them. This is listed as a casual dining experience. It is casual only in attire not in cost especially if you’re bringing children.
Not as memorable as the first time I visited many years ago. The resort fee was exorbitant, yet a necessary add-on to serve food at an eleven thousand foot elevation. The hostess didn’t do anything to accommodate my request for a different table. I booked my reservation in October and didn’t expect to be at the very last table in front of drafty doors. The evening fell short of my hopes for a memorable night. The food was fine and one of the servers worked beyond the call of duty.
It was really cool to be able to travel up a 40 minute Gondola ride to the top of the Mountains for a unique experience. It is very pricey, but most fondue restaurants are pricey. I had hoped for a more cozy experience while in the restaurant. You share long tables with other guests and cook on little electric grills. We were with an 18, 19, and 21 year old who had never experienced any of it so it was super cool for them. If you've "been around", not sure it was worth the money. The service was good and the manager was great!
This a great place for a full evening of entertainment. Our family enjoyed the fondue, grilling, dancing and the polka music. From the youngest (7) to the oldest (60's) it was a great time. Service from Jesse and crew was excellent. The gondola rides to and from were great night time rides complete with blankets for warmth.
The Manager, John, went out of his way to help us. We had a medical emergency during our dinner and he was beyond helpful. Also, we needed a carryout dinner, due to sickness and the staff was outstanding in assisting us.
I highly comment John and his staff for the great experience we had considering the issues we that needed handling.
The medical attention was fabulous.
The music, food, wait staff and fireplace made the evening a family memory.
The atmosphere was not as fun as we remembered from years past. There was a lot of German music and dancing years ago. That made it unique and fun. The band was cute this time but not lively. Good food and fun to cook but pricey. Our waiter Daniel was awesome!
We had our Christmas dinner here. Given that it’s a commitment to get up there in 10 degree weather, every piece of the experience should have been better. Service was slow, food was average at best- over seasoned. Best part was the cheese fondue . Worst part was the bill. There’s resort fees and lots of taxes added on so without trying at all, you will clear $100 per person. I’ve been here many times over the last 30 years and wish that it were still good. Skip it and go to a Frisco for dinner.
We visited for our special Christmas Eve dinner and thought it would be a great experience. Really enjoyed the atmosphere, music, etc. Unfortunately the serving staff was completely overwhelmed (although there must have been a dozen bussers floating around who didn't appear to know what to do). We had to ask multiple times for drink refills (3x's for one person!) and they didn't take our menus until we had been there at least 40 minutes. First 3 courses were great, although portions were small on the cheese fondue for 6 people and had to ask for additional food. Unfortunately dessert was disastrous - while the chocolate was great, the food for dipping was awful: pretzels and cookies were stale to the point of being inedible, pound cake was hard, donuts were slightly less stale but definitely not fresh, etc.; we had no staff check on us during the 30 minutes after we were served so we could not communicate to them of our dissatisfaction. It unfortunately tainted the entire experience and was very disappointing to spend $500 on a meal for 6 people that ended so poorly.
