Der Fondue Chessel Ratings and Reviews
It was an impromptu decision to try this restaurant experience. We were celebrating birthdays and an upcoming Master's degree, with my cousins. My husband and I do not ski or snowboard, so this was a terrific opportunity for us. We loved the gondola ride to the restaurant. It was snowing, so that only added to the experience. The staff was gracious upon our arrival and they explained the menu well. They even stepped outside, while it was snowing, to take a photo for us. We loved the atmosphere and the music. The fondue experience was new to 75% of us; it did not disappoint. We really enjoyed the entire time we spent at Der Fondue Chessel.
This place is totally about the journey....two gondola rides up the mountain to a Bavarian Chalet themed restaurant. The fondue experience was unique and memorable...the servers were pleasant and attentive. The meal is not worth the pricetag but if you consider the lovely ride and the mointaintop experience, it was a great evening, well worth the price.
Make sure you let your hostess know if you want the vegetarian racqulet...I assumed falsely that since I wrote it on open table that they would see that and flag my reservation. So I didn't get the whole vegetarian meal I wanted, but I didn't leave hungry. That was my main disappointment. Also would suggest they add more fruit to the chocolate fondue. But beautiful place and very fun and worth it.
We loved almost everything about the restaurant, except, when you need to go the restroom, it's almost a football field away, and down a very long set of stairs. I would almost NOT go again, because of the trek to the restroom.
Otherwise, the food was excellent, service was great, and the ambiance was excellent. It is a little pricey, so a family of 4 will see a bill close to $400! We had one bottle of wine, a single glass alcoholic drink, with no other extras, and with tax & gratuity, we were $540. Like I said, definitely worth doing once, as it was a great experience, but I think I would look for something in town next time!
It was good but definitely expensive. They don't tell you that on top of the approx. $100 per plate, they also charge $35.00 just to bring the food up the mountain. It was a good one time experience but would not go again. Plenty of food...but again... you do most of the work by cooking the food yourself so I'm not sure our $600.00 bill was worth the chicken and beef meal included. The view was beautiful....the gondola ride was also a great experience.
We ate here with friends on the last night of our ski trip. We took two kids - one had water, the other had a Sprite. My wife and I each had two glasses of wine and we didn't order anything extra. Our portion of the tab came to $420, which is absolutely ludicrous. $420 bought a plate of olives and cheese, a few chunks of bread, a pot of melted cheese, chunks of chicken and beef, and basically s'mores for dessert - all of which you cook yourself on a sterno-powered griddle. Whoever came up with the idea of charging a small fortune for a mediocre-at-best meal you cook yourself is a genius.
Highly recommend for a fun evening! Be prepared for several hours of dining if you do the fixed price 3 course meal. Your waiter will walk you through how to order and prepare everything. Simple and delicious! Wonderful ambience with huge fireplace. We had a truly memorable evening and will be back on our next visit to Keystone.
As always the food was excellent. The issues we did have tonight were quickly resolved by the Manager Adam. We do a "special" family night once a ski season and tonight was that night at Der Fondue Chessel. Founde and Raclette are not for everyone, but for us it a social event. The views at this place are great and if the moon is out the gondola ride back is amazing.
While tonight was not one of my best nights here, again the manager was great at resolving the issue quickly and discreetly. Thank you to Adam and Monique for your great service.
We love going to dinner at Fondue Chessel. We go every year when we visit Keystone, its fun taking the Gondola up and the food and service has never disappointed. It's a fun evening. Note, if they offer you a blanket for the ride up take it.
The atmosphere is fun and can accommodate a large group of people.
Sadly the quantity of food is less than in previous years, especially the fish options. In the past meat could be exchanged out for the fish/seafood options. This year this was not allowed so for the non meat eater/ pescatarian the options were limited. The quantity of fish/seafood was also minimal. Very disappointing
The previous group of musicians, "Those Austrian Guys" were alot more fun than the current group which are more docile and less engaging.
I may go back to introduce friends to the experience but will not return with just my husband for the reasons above.
Never had raclette style fondue. Interesting but would have liked more cheese to use. Fun way to interact while eating dinner. Appetizer and dinner were just fine/uninteresting food, salad was exceptional for Caesar. Dessert was the best part. We had the dark chocolate with frangelico and hazelnut (not an upgrade, just different which I appreciate). The base price is not for the food (upgrades are probably necessary if you're looking for a foodie experience). It the whole experience in my opinion (gondola ride at sunset, eating on the mountain). The trio providing music and the fireplace were nice ambiance but we are still clearly seated in what is a cafeteria during the day. Fun once but probably wouldn't do it again.
Definitely worth the experience... riding the gondolas, the ambience and service was great, even though they were understaffed, everyone made its best to make it a fun unique dinning experience.
Food is good, slightly above average, definitely not gourmet or by itself worth the $110-120 pp after taxes, tip and some "resort fee".
Worth the experience? Absolutely. Worth repeating it? Definitely not. It's a one time "must try" type of thing. So, if you haven't been there, definitely go for the experience, great for date night or family (can be a bit expensive for large group). Go there hungry as it's a 3 course meal and you can ask for more of each.
Order the standard menu for $65pp, no need any of the add ons... very pricey.
Hostess were great too, as well as love music group.
We very much enjoyed our Valentines there!!!
I've been to the Keystone fondue at least a half-dozen times, and thoroughly enjoy it! People complain about the price, but considering you eating at close to 12,000 feet, and taking 2 gondola rides to get there - deal with it! I would recommend not ordering the extras, as there is more food than you can eat with the salad, veggies, cheese fondue, beef, chicken, and chocolate fondue. It's an adventure! I totally love the experience, and food. We'll do it again in the future! The music is fun, the fireplace and lodge incredible!
This place has so much character. The live musicians were amazing. They played folk music along with other types to get you hoppin :). The food was great!! The food comes in large portions so order accordingly with your stomach not your eyes. The price was fair and the service was great!!!
Not worth the money! We were celebrating my hubby's 50th birthday and wish we would have gone elsewhere. For the amount of money you pay the servings are horrible. The service wasn't that great either. Very slow. We wished we would have done the sleigh ride dinner again. We were just looking for something different. The food was amazing on that and so much fun! This was just okay. Nothing special. The family time going up and down gondola was probably the best. :)
Beautiful location, felt like an adventure getting there by gondola in the snow. However, the meal itself was over the top and overpriced ($65 per adult, $37 for kids). The food was good but too much, and the meal was drawn out over 4 courses and 2 hours. The chocolate fondue was fantastic and almost made it worth the trip. We would've enjoyed it more with less food at $40 a plate.
Went here for a new years eve date. The ambiance is great, the condola rides are amazing, and the food was great. I don't know if they were a little overwhelmed on new years or what, but the table we were seated at was dirty, there was a bug in the water left for me at the table, and the silver was dirty as well. The server was quick to fix and apologize... We'd come back here again if we were in the area, but I wouldn't make the hour drive from Denver just for dinner again.
