They asked if we wanted to sit outside and it was way too cool outside. They did not have a table inside so we had no other option. They had one glass of the wine we ordered and said they were getting more within about 10 minutes so we waited and waited. No one came back to get a different wine order or anything else. I had to walk into the bar twice to ask for a server and a refill of wine. The food was tasty. The server assistant was fantastic and we were very pleased with her but don’t waste your time or money on this place.
The lunch hours posted on the building say 11 am. We had an 11:30 lunch reservation, arrived a few minutes early, and the door was locked and the sign in the window said closed! We had to call from their doorstep; they eventually opened to let us in. Tried to order a drink, but they apparently have just beer and wine now. To summarize the rest of lunch, service was ridiculously slow and erratic and the food was just ok. We never got to order after lunch coffee and finally just flagged the manager down for the check.Hope they figure things out because the setting is really lovely, but this was a definite disappointment and completely unlike previous meals there. Perhaps the ownership change has impacted this restaurant.
Everything was wonderful. We were a bit unsettled as this was our first visit under new ownership, but everything was as good as it’s ever been! Can’t wait to return and look forward to the addition of a full bar (hopefully)!
We made early reservations almost 2 months in advance. We saw the menu, Italian Fare, but O K, and the prices were reasonable. We were never given the regular menu, only a Thanksgiving Menu. Their regular Menu had offered Items we were prepared to order, entree and soup or salad around $35-$40 each, which was fine by us. When we arrived we were given only a Thanksgiving Menu with no prices on it, and no warning given by our waitress. I had salad (no big deal), Osso Bucco, and they probably bought it from a market at the last minute pumpkin pie. My wife had bean soup, eggplant lasagna, and a tiramisu. I had a beer. There was nothing fancy about this restaurant, no fine linen, no fine cutlery, and no fine service, and I have dined at many wonderful Restaurants in the Napa/Sonoma area (Mustards, Brix, Rutherford Grill, Bouchon, etc.). The food was not memorable, and aside from simply bringing us our food, nothing extra to the service (it was no better than Denny’s type service). The waitress out of common courtesy and decency should have told us that we were about to be gouged (seriously overpriced prices for mediocre food, and we were unsuspecting victims). Their regular menu prices didn’t come anywhere close to what we were unsuspectantly charged. $206.69- wow nothing less than gouging at the highest level, like they were desperate for money! I should have known because there weren’t that many people in the restaurant ( probably old time customers and others that were kept in the dark like my wife and I). To add injury to insult they added a mandatory 20% Tip calling it a Special Event! I would call it a “Special Rip-Off Event”! I come to Napa/Sonoma every year, and this awful experience has truly dampened my enthusiasm. I understand the owner and cook are new, having recently purchased the Hotel and Restaurant. That may explain the greed to rip off customers, both old and new! God strike me dead if I should ever step foot onto that property! You should be ashamed!
This is always a lovely place to have dinner in the beautiful and peaceful courtyard. Plenty of heaters to keep you warm. We had a very nice time.
Thanksgiving dinner was fantastic from start to finish. Three course holiday menu for $75.Ribolitta soup, old fashioned Turkey dinner with stuffing, root vegetables and home made hot gravy. Pumpkin pie topped it off.
Gorgeous setting overlooking pool area in a Tuscan Farm house from 1870.
The Depot Hotel with its outdoor dining around a fountain pool, offered a perfect space for our family of four adults and two young children. A very satisfying Thanksgiving.
Salad was all lettuce, little blue cheese and "litteler" apples so thinly sliced that the New York Times could be clearly read through them
The restaurant can "stuff" the stuffing - awful stuff!
Turkey, generously sliced from a a baked, formed breast was , surprisingly, flavorable
Mashed potatoes and gray were lackluster (bland tasting)
Vegetables were perfectly prepared - al dente!
Pumpkin pie (mix) came straight from a can - not a bit of spiciness!
Expensive meal - at least the kitchen profited!
We had a wonderful Thanksgiving lunch at the Depot Hotel. The food was delicious and the service excellent. We were able to sit outside by the beautiful pool. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Celebrated our 34th anniversary and Thanksgiving Eve with a fabulous dinner and exceptional service at The Depot!
We had such a great evening!
Wife and I have enjoyed Depot for over a decade. About an hour before this reservation we heard the prior owner and chef sold their interests in the restaurant and the initial reviews were spotty.
Regardless, we went ahead and kept our reservation because we didn’t want to find something last minute.
Sadly, the only thing good now about this restaurant is the location. The food is no longer exceptional or challenging the envelope. Honestly, I’ve had equal or better at chain restaurants. I had the Veal Marsala, something I normally get at this restaurant, to set a comparison. The current offering paled in comparison. My wife had prosciutto and cheese tortellini with a cream sauce. What she got was no better than boxed pasta and jar sauce. I tried her meal and it was sub-par at best.
The wine menu is absolutely boring now. I can usually find something decent anywhere. I stuck with water. My wife had a single glass and passed on a second.
Where they once used white tablecloths to warm up the ambiance, now it’s cold granite bistro style tables. This was my wife’s biggest complaint and detail easily resolved.
We both agreed this venue has reached its unfortunate end and it’s time to forget and move on. Unless they change for the better I don’t see a bright future for this restaurant.
First time Great veal scalopini and canneoli Shrimp bisque Fast freindly service Nice host and pool view but soundtrack didn’t fit- Don McLean ??
The Depot has recently undergone a change in ownership. So far the menu, value and quality of the food has remained very high and we hope it remains so. The wine list needs to be expanded in a manner that would offer more options and price points. The staff were very efficient, warm and accommodating.
Fantastic food, every dish was amazing
Everything was great and as it should be.
Beautiful historic setting with plenty of parking. Great service and food. Only complaint would be that it got cold and the heaters warmed my face but not my feet.
This has always been our favorite go to restaurant in Sonoma. They have consistently had talented and accommodating staff. The original owner father chef and then son chef only got better with time.
Fortunately for the owner family they found a buyer and well deserved retirement. Now the question is will the new kitchen staff meet the standards of the prior Chefs. Tried the menu (smaller in offerings) last night and ordered a consistent favorite. Was good, not as hot as usually presented (we were sitting out on a cool evening) and very good, but a little off from the same dish a month ago.
Featured soup of the night, which we both had, was outstanding. Would order over and over and over again (butternut squash).
Desert was decadent too rich Chocolate torte to finish, overwhelmingly good.
Since the jury is still out, will need to go back 25 times and continue to check the Depot out.
You will most likely really like the palace. :-)
We were outside by the pool and it was wonderful - the Depot Hotel Restaurant is just a block away from all the craziness of the downtown Sonora area which makes it an easy place to find parking in the lot right across from it and relax. The food is OUTSTANDING and everyone on their team was kind and attentive.
Love Depot Hotel! I hope the new owners don't change anything!
We sat outdoors and it was pleasant with the heaters. Staff was friendly, attentive and accommodated our late addition of a salad before our entree--the waiter checked with the kitchen and made sure everything didn't come out at once. Came here based on a friend's recommendation who was there two weeks prior--we'd definitely come back again.
We spent the day visiting wineries and ended walking around Sonoma Square. Many of the options were booked, but the Depot had a few openings, so we decided to give it a try. Ohmygosh am I glad we did! The warm and inviting atmosphere, coupled with the friendly and attentive staff, set the stage for a fabulous dinner. This little hidden gem was the perfect way to cap the day. We’ve added this to our list of favorites and will definitely be back! Don’t miss this one!
I've always enjoyed The Depot and miss the former owners. The lunch menu leaves you wanting more choices - sandwiches, lunch-size salads, etc. The entrees are good but many people don't want to pay $22+ for a lunch item. It would be great if you revised the lunch menu to include items mentioned.
Great meal around the pool. Cool evening but heaters were just right. Service and food were excellent
Very pleasant staff. Food was well prepared and reasonably priced. Nice selection of wines. My wife had salmon, while i had veal. Would return again.
We had a wonderful dinner here… new to us and recommended by a friend pre-Covid. This was our first night back in Sonoma after 18 months. It was truly delightful. We shared a Cesar salad with anchovies, I had the spinach ravioli and my husband had a seafood pasta. We finished with sea salt gelato. We brought a bottle of Kamen Cabernet which was a perfect addition to the meal. A truly marvelous experience and one that we will repeat!!
Eating outside by the pool was very pleasant; the swordfish was delicious.
The food was delicious and the service was outstanding.
great job- except the oil/vinegar was not provided until we asked for it
A WARM AND FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE. FOOD WAS VERY GOOD AND TASTY.
SERVICE: CHEERFUL AND FRIENDLY. A MOST ENJOYABLE NIGHT OUT.
We are on our honeymoon, we live in Chicago and picked this restaurant off line, when we arrived we couldn't believe how beautiful it was! We ate outside in on the patio next to the pool. The service was outstanding and the food was heavenly! I would recommend this restaurant to you who are reading this!
We were taste testing for a family dinner we’re having next month. The food was excellent and Nicole was super helpful with our menu and wine planning. Really terrific experience! Would highly recommend.
Food remains excellent despite new ownership. Very comforting on a cool rainy evening. Broccoli soup, veal scallopini, limoncello cake...hmmmm.
Food was great! Service was good! Sat near the bathroom door, closes loudly!
Very good value and food
Great food! Interesting wine selection. Attentive yet courteous service.
love this place and everything about it. we are there once a week.
Great Italian food, good service in a lovely setting outdoors
Great dinner and service.
We had the very outstanding swordfish, a great Caesar salad and your exceptional tiramisu! Prasan (sp?) is a outstanding waiter..friendly, professional and kind!
Everything was great!
