Departure Restaurant and Lounge Ratings and Reviews
The food was fire. The service was great. The only I didn't like is how the server talked my date out of some things she wanted to order and changed her mind. Just let her get what she wants. Some may appreciate the suggestions but I did not. Other than that, it was perfect.
Departure took great care of us as we celebrated our daughter's 18th birthday. She sat with her friends while my husband and I sat in the bar. The food and drinks were delicious and the staff really made our daughter feel celebrated. My husband and I enjoyed talking to the bartender. It was a great night!
We had heard multiple people go on and on about Departure. Some told us we would feel like we were in a space ship. My husband remarked that he felt we were in an old episode of Star Trek. It is different and a bit of a maze.
We had reservations, but opted to wait to get a table near a window view. Even after the wait, the table was near the window, but not in a way that really provided a view (you're up on the 15th floor, so a view would've been nice). If you make reservations and this matters to you, ask for it ahead of time and be specific that you want a view). The tables themselves are super wide between you and the person across from you and then really close to the adjacent tables. So, you feel like you are having to lean across the table to have any sort of "intimate" conversation without disturbing those next to you.
As for the food, it looks and sounds amazing, but taste doesn't really measure up to the hype. We ordered the crab and shrimp fried rice and that was okay, but the fried rice on the breakfast menu at Cheryl's on 12 that morning was tons better. The pork belly was a let down for my husband, because he is not a sweet/savory person. Most ways we have had pork belly is savory and the sauce on this was pretty sweet and not our favorite. The only thing that we really enjoyed were the egg rolls. All in all, not our fave Portland spot for the money spent.
Their edamame and dinner wings are two of my favorite things ever!! The ambiance is so posh and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. It was my friends birthday and we showed up 20 minutes past out reservation time and it was so problem. I recommend this place to all my friends and always bring out of town guests here.
Well this was a big disappointment all around. I took my boyfriend here for his 30th, a big milestone. I made a reservation several days in advance and even got a call from the restaurant confirming the time, and I told them how excited I was and reiterated that it was a special occasion. We got there right on time and had to wait several minutes because our table wasn’t ready while customer after customer who came in after us was seated right away. I thought surely they have a special table for us with a great view for the special occasion and that’s what’s taking so long. Nope. They took us back to our table which was crammed and uncomfortably small for two people. There was (at most) a partial view of the city with only one of the seats facing out the window. It was freezing bc the air conditioning vent was blowing right on us. To top it off, no special desert or anything extra for the special occasion. Definitely will skip it for those special nights. Too bad bc I was so excited for this meal 😞
The interior design is fantastic, and the view amazing if you're seated near a window. We were at a high interior table and still had a fab experience. The food is incredible with some really unique dishes and desserts. The cocktails are also really tasty, and I liked that they have a good variety of virgin cocktails for those that don't drink alcohol but still want something fun and different. Well worth it and would definitely suggest dinner there to anyone visiting Portland.
Our vegan dishes were complex, creative, and delicious. With advanced communication, the staff went beyond the regular menu to create an extensive vegan tasting menu for my boyfriend and I- a real treat! We received excellent service from our server and all other staff. All were timely, charming, and well-informed. The physical atmosphere is superb, but prepare for some loud, obnoxious, entitled clientele. I will definitely return for cocktails and small plates when the patio opens.
If you are looking for a TOP CHEF restaurant then you found it. Gorgeous setting overlooking the city; well trained staff; excellent bar and bartender; food outrageously good. Shareable! I had the crab fried rice and couldn't stop talking about it. My husband had the beef stir fry. Our server was absolutely the best.
The service was terrific. The food was very good. The drinks were not great. The wine was good although expensive for the pour. The martinis were on the high side too, particularly since they were quite small and seemed weak--they were disappointing. On the plus side, you were given three olives. I would take one less olive for a better drink.
The tables for two are long (between yourself and your partner) so you are actually closer to the person next to you than to your date. That's a bit awkward.
That said, it's a nice view for the person facing the windows, good service, a good atmosphere and good food, but not economical!
I took my daughters here specifically for my oldest 18th birthday. We were expecting a lot and were not disappointed. Very knowledge and friendly waitstaff greeted us and kept us happy the duration of our meal. The food was amazing and each plate was better than the last...
This meal was delicious. During my stay in Portland, it was hard for me to find a restaurant that could easily cater to my gluten/dairy allergy (I really don't like making modifications to items on the menu). The food was fresh, healthy, and full of flavor. The absolute best meal I had during my visit!
We went to Departure with little idea of what we were going to get. We ended up getting cocktails, wine, and the regular tasting menu, as there were too many things on the menu for us to make a decision. We enjoyed most of the dishes on the tasting menu but found the order a little odd, as well as the slew of vegetable dishes that were all extremely sour that arrived together. We will definitely be going back, it was a lovely ambiance, the food that wasn't later in the meal was absolutely wonderful, and the drinks were quite tasty.
