I love Departure, the food is awesome and the service is top notch. We went for dinner and two of the four of us took advantage of Portland Dining Month, so got to try the (amazing) roasted carrot salad and very good Massaman curry. We had 3 desserts and all of them were good.
While I appreciate the food, the prices are up there, so we will probably stick to happy hour from now on.
My favorite thing at Departure is the outdoor rooftop bar, we usually visit that 2-3x a summer!
Food and service was excellent. Nobody hurried us and they brought the food one at a time so we could enjoy every dish.
Fantastic server, cool vibe, great views of Portland. The food was all delicious but I expected a bit more refinement.
Great food, just so noisy it is hard to have a conversation
Stunning design, knowledgeable and friendly service, excellent, creative food well executed. Would prefer being served dishes in the order, ordered rather than as kitchen prepares them.
The food was EXCELLENT. However, it took a bit too long to arrive.
One can always enjoy several rounds of sushi and dim sum at Departure; this time a different path. A light sake and a great muddled jalapeño margarita for openers, along with satisfying onigiri and Kano avocado roll. Mains were the seafood-bacon-kimchi hotpot and Brussels sprouts. Excellent gluten-free options, excellent attentive service: shout out to Bri for her overall knowledge and sake recommendations. Also a nice reminder that good rice is always worth paying for.
Had a good experience, the food overall was great, we stayed away from their sushi as we didn’t hear great things from others about it. I’d suggest the crispy pork belly, we wish we ordered more. Also the crab & sausage fried race was amazing.
Amazing food, and amazing staff and service. Was asked multiple times about any food allergies, and my water glass was never empty. Already planning another trip to Departure.
Had an unbelievable experience. Most expensive meal of the year for me, but worth every penny.
My husband and I enjoyed a delicious, creative series of dishes for Portland Dining Month. The service was excellent, the food exceptional. We loved the beautiful view of the city. We will definitely return!
I love the views, the service, the wonderful cocktails and various drink experiences, but each time I have returned to Departure, I think the quality of the food (both the creativity of the menu and the actual taste and presentation of the food) has gone down, and it certainly is not worth the money you pay compared to many other places where a “schmamcy” meal lives up to the money paid and expectations. Overall I’d give it a 3.5 stars because of the incredible staff & service.
This is the second time I have been here. The pork belly is by far my favorite starter dish.
The food was delicious. Thank you for the Portland Dining monthly experience. Great server, attentive to our needs, our drinks, our water, our napkins, EVERYTHING.
Definitely plan on going back again. I think my favorite was the way that the server (blonde haired female on Friday, March 16th at 9:15 pm..sorry forgot your name) was attentive, made eye contact and while it was busy as heck, she never made us feel like she was stressed or worried. She really gave us her undivided attention. offered up suggestions, had polite conversation and quips. Well done!!
EXTREMELY EXTREMELY OVERPRICED!!
We had been looking forward to dine here, and What a disappointment this restaurant was. Does not live up to the hype at all.
The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful, on the top of the Nines hotel with a great outdoor bar with incredible city views.
The service was disappointing . No dishes were ever recommended to us, or explained when it arrived at the table.
We order the tuna poke and the hamachi apps, both were delicious but the portion were way to small for the price.
For dinner we that the bibimbap, the rice was super over cooked and mushy, not crispy like it’s supposed to be and The snapper was over salted. We were charged $23 dollar for a shot of 12yr old Macallan and exorbitant price for it, the 4 seasons in NY charger less, and this is certainly not NY or the 4 season.
We expect Departure to be expensive, but we also expected the service and the food to reflect it , and it just didn’t.
Was a great recommendation from a neighbor. We live in Bend and we're in Portland shopping so it was a fast trip. I was a little skeptical at first when I saw the menu but was very surprised when I tasted everything. The food portions are small but great for sharing because the flavor was amazing. I would definitely go again. The server was so wonderful as well.
Departure is a great place to feel like a million bucks. great vistas, delicious food and drinks, and impeccable service (shout out to our server Ben who was personable and all around above standard for such a high end place).
Great for dates, aniversarys, or if you want to feel like your walking into the future.
Poor value for the money. Didn’t like how one meal came out before the other when we were supposed to be dining together. Wouldn’t do it again.
They didn't seat us til 45min after our reservation and all they had as a constellation prize was a 'nice table'. They food isn't that good and it's crazy overpriced. The cocktails are $12-15 and one was like a shot. Not going back here. It's snooty and pretentious and this is Portland. If I wanted to be in LA. I would be in LA.
Service was inattentive. I felt invisible to our waiter , possibly because I’m an older woman (?)
We hit Departure for the Portland Monthly Dining special. Four of us shared the Prix Fix meals and two of us shared off the regular menu. All the food was fantastic; flavors, portion size, presentation, all of it. I rated service outstanding because our Waitress was amazing - patient when we were indecisive, offered good suggestions, always friendly, not there when we didn’t need her and magically appearing the minute we did need something. The Sommelier seemed a bit miffed that we brought our own special bottle of wine, and I would have rated his service, tone and manner as well below average. This in spite of us being perfectly happy to pay a $30 corkage fee. Seems like you should get good treatment for that price. The place was a bit noisy, but there was a great energetic vibe so I guess that’s the trade off. We will definitely go back.
We have been wanting to try Departure for awhile and decided to take advantage of Portland Dining Month and make a reservation. The dining month menu was fantastic; oftentimes restaurants seem to just call it in with the dining month menus, but not here. I got the shrimp and lemongrass salad, which was lovely, the surprisingly aromatic snapper and the lemon bar dessert. Excellent! Will probably try the happy hour sometime in the future so we can enjoy some more Asian fusion without breaking the bank.
Food was very good, but dinner was marred by spotty service and loud group near our table.
Great service from the bar to the table. Super delicious food that doesn’t make you feel full. Great to taste some top notch food.
Dislike the restriction on the number of credit cards allowed per table.
Menu sometimes obscure.
Good food; good service. Good portions
A friend recommended taking out of town guest to Departure for the food and view. We requested a table with a good view and got placed in the bar (furthest from any view). Food was a let down, cilantro covered EVERYTHING! I don’t mind cilantro normally but it was very soapy and overpowering. After realizing the food would all come with cilantro we requested the rest of what had to come please not have cilantro. Server seemed annoyed and we barely saw her the rest of the night. Would have liked to have more than one cocktail but service was poor and were never given a chance to reorder until dessert menus were presented. Will not return, food was underwhelming and service needed work for the level of dining.
We went to Departure for Portland Dining Month, as an opportunity to eat at a restaurant that I generally would not go to. I was amazed at the view, the ambiance, the creative cuisine, and the service. It was hard, though, to imagine that people actually spend that much money on dinner, as indicated by the regular dinner menu. I wondered about the ability of Portlanders to eat so well! I wish we all could enjoy such food on a regular basis.
The food was not up to par with what we expected. We had the kani avo sushi: tasted okay, but was really tiny, pork siomai:yummy but not worth the price for 4pcs, and bibimpap: absolutely tasteless. I was also celebrating my birthday and my partner specifically asked the server if they had a sort of dessert we could end our meal with, he said he would see what he could do, but never got back to my partner nor did they serve anything for that request.
First let me start with the positive which is the food and the atmosphere. Six of us came for Portland Dining Month. There were two choices in each category and between the six of us we had all the options.....super delicious and great presentation!!
What didn't work so well for us was the sharing of dishes; someone always came up short ended. For example, if three people at your table order the same dish, you get one bowl with three portions. The portions are on the small side to begin with, so the first and second person taking a portion ended up taking all the chicken, leaving only a couple of potatoes and mushrooms for the third person:( My friend and I ordered the shrimp appetizer and the trout dish. We managed a bit better in sharing and felt we got more equal portions. Fortunately the desserts came out separately, six individual servings, and we were equally pleased with our selections!! I highly recommend the lemon tart, but those who had the chocolate dessert were quite content.
We would like to go back, but will ask for individual servings and hope that is possible, as the food is very good!!
Small quantities, big flavors. the restaurant immediately.... when we arrive started to let us know how things work.... "we only split the bill twice" says the hostess randomly....OK we say... we have 4 couples.
Waitress "I am going to lump it (the bill) all together and you can figure it out" OK? we say.
Waitress "its family style... i am going to put everything in the middle and you can share" OK? no wait.....I dont' want to share?
When the bill came it require some math (and calculators) as some ordered bottles of wine and some drank water. this dividing up the bill took us 15 minutes...
Waitress...."here is the bill...mark it up and let me know how to run your cards"
Would have been much nicer experience if the Waitress would have broken it into two bills.
Beautiful location. Great happy hour.
food was beyond terrible, drinks were good. Noodles were undercooked/hard and second dish was soggy and disgusting.
I brought my gf to this place. We really enjoyed the foods there. Every single dishes were incredible and delicious. Seats were bit close to each other and table was small. But it was really enjoyable dinner.
Food is good, but not sufficient
I’ve been going to departure since it opened and had always had a good experience until recently. I went 2 weeks ago to take my daughter for a girls day and the staff was rude telling her not to touch the wall because it was artwork. Then my husband and I went this weekend for our anniversary and the manager was rude. My bad was laying next to me on the floor and he cane over and told me to move my bag because his staff almost tripped over it. I was happy to move my bag but his delivery in asking was terrible I won’t go back. Bummer. Really liked this place. Good food. Rude people.
Not the best experience, always crowded.
So good! Loved their shrimp salad. Al of the food was excellent. Service was kind, friendly and efficient. Great ambiance. Will definitely come back!
It was great. It is way too loud though.
We saw Kevin Durant !
We had the best service for our first time visit...Thank you for all the recommendations and great food.
