Excellent experience. Fantastic service. Would definitely recommend!
Took my girlfriend here since it was her first time in Portland and I have to admit I was disappointed. The food and our server Ben were both fantastic but when we got there they sat us at a horrible table with a big wall making it so you couldn’t see anything. Then after I explained to 1 manager I wanted to move she made it sound like a big deal and slid us over to a table less than a foot away. After that I grabbed the second manager on duty and after explaining the situation to him instead of giving me a discount on my bill he asked if we wanted to go outside in the rain to take pictures.... overall I was sad that the management couldn’t come up with a better solution.
Went for the imperial chefs prix fixe. I felt like they were trying to fill us up with cheaper ingredients. We left uncomfortably full. So many big bowls of root veggies all with vinaigrette. The Thai curry was listed on the menu as coming with duck, but we received the vegan version, again full of root veggies. We felt like the perfect adjective for the meal would be “uninspired”. It’s the 1st time I’ve been disappointed with ordering a prix fixe meal. We would recommend to others, but order only what appeals to them on the menu. Don’t trust their choices.
Perfect as always!!!
After being seating for 1.5 hours, was asked to leave the table, as they had another reservation. First it would not have been a problem had it been stated when we sat. Second we ordered dessert, and had just started it when we were told to leave.
Manager asked if she could get us a drink at the bar. I said I would like a coffee. So we went to bar, only to be told the bar does not have coffee.
We won’t be back.
They went out of their way to seat us at a nice table & recognize the birthday. Very nice!
I wanted to try Chef Gregory's restaurant since I've seen him on Top Chef. It did not disappoint! They start off by making sure there aren't any dietary restrictions. They accidentally seated the 2 of us in a seat that had been reserved for a proposal, then moved us to the next seat over and bought us our drinks. I think this is a nice touch that they would go to these lengths for people! We ordered the Chef's Sampler, which was a 4 course meal sampling the menu. The food and presentation was amazing! I can't wait to come back the next time I get to Portland!
Seven girls in our party for a birthday celebration. The food was to die for and our server was perfect! So were all of the other staff people involved (bartender, water guy, etc. etc.)
It was good but kind of too loud
Good service, but she recommended a slimy salmon collar with so many bones- that we hated. The seasoning was heavy-handed - the only thing I tasted in every other bit of my skirt steak was dill or ginger. Too much, too clumpy.
We went for New Year’s eve, it was busy as expected but were sat within 5 minutes of arrival. Austin was our server and split our checks easily, got us finished up in perfect timing and overall was awesome. Highly recomend
Very tasty food served by an attentive wait staff. If you are looking for standard American fare, this isn't the place to go, but if you like innovative Asian fusion, it is really good. The noise level is moderate and they do their best to create smaller spaces in a large room. It isn't inexpensive, but you are getting quality food.
New Year’s Eve ... the only disappointing thing was .. at the roof top bar.. the bar tender said “No mint” I can’t make any Mojito... we are like COME ON!!! Lol.. atleast bar tenders can be courteous enough to say what else can I make or give us some options... we spent 70$ on Two shots of Mcallan and Long Island Ice tea.. not the service or response I expected at the rooftop bar.. on a New Year’s Eve .. haha.. we love this place so I hope they can improve services. Thanks
Great experience! The food at Departure is amazing! There were 4 of us and we ordered quite a few different dishes and loved them all! The drinks were great and the customer service was 5 star! I highly recommend!
The “Whole Ducking Experience” was nuts and the steamed pork dumplings were just little flavor bombs. The service was fabulous and overall it was a great way to kick off NYE!
Everything was amazing and Austin took great care of us!
This has become our annual celebration of my son’s birthday, with the full Duck Experience! Departure never disappoints, and is one of the most flavorful experiences in town. Always appreciated is the attention to details like dietary preferences, allergies and ambiance. We’ll be back in 2020!
Special birthday dinner for my wife; we never eat out downtown. Mentioned occassion to host and server to bring attention. Mark, server, total incompetent and dismissive with a bad attitude. I had to ask 3 times for a class of ice (someone else brought it); 4 times for a beer (someone else brought it); twice for soy sauce (someone else brought it); and so on. COMPLETELY INSULTORY SERVICE. Called manager Kahill afterwards who gave me "his word" on remediation and a $100 coupon for our dismall experience. Of course, his word is as good as Mark's service - non-existent. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON THIS HALF-BAKED ESTABLISHMENT. The food wasn't even very good. Shame on you Departures and Mark and Kahill.
My favorite restaurant. Best salad I ever had - charred carrots.
Food was amazing!
Great experience! I’m GF (medical reasons rather than lifestyle) and the server was super knowledgeable - even stopped me for ordering a cocktail that I was unaware had gluten in it. Overall a ton of food and dessert options for both vegans and gluten free. The decor is fun (a little space ship inspired) and the service and food are significantly better than I expected from a “hotel restaurant.”
Duck dinner is great holiday tradition
Great service as soon as you walk in. Austin was our server but everyone gave exceptional service. The Duck Experience is definitely something everyone should try!
Very good food, nice but noisy room, perfunctory service. 8/10 Rating.
We ordered the bibimbap, which we’ve had before, because we like how it gets crispy. The server even gave the whole spiel about stirring and waiting for it to crisp up. It didn’t. When the second dish of bibimbap came out for the other couple at our table we explained how ours didn’t get crispy and he said, “well, maybe this one will” ...it also didn’t. Service seemed rushed and quality wasn’t great, especially for the price.
Our family of 4 was more than satisfied with our Departure experience. The menu choices were wonderful for our diverse tastes and dietary need and every single person was extremely please with their choices. Service was excellent. We just didn't think the seating took good use of the view. But, we will come back!
Thank you so much! A wonderful birthday for the books! Chef Gregory’s design in the Duck experience was exquisite. Very happy I tried duck for the first time at Departure! Merry Christmas! :)
Oisin and Louise from Ireland and Akiko from Japan. It was ducking great!!!
Great time, just a large two too table, we felt very far across from each other. But food and service were fabulous!
This is our 2nd time with the duck dining experience. The 2nd time was just as good as last year. Would highly recommend the duck experience in December.
Had the peking duck special and will definitely be back again soon!
Departure is one of our favorite spots throughout the year, but December is Peking duck month! From duck broth to coconut duck fat ice cream, one cannot go wrong. Thank you to the chefs and servers for an amazing experience.
Friendly staff that was very knowledgeable of the menu that created a very enjoyable meal.
We went for the special duck dinner they do every December. I’ll have to say it was some of the best duck we have ever had. Departure never disappoints.
We came for the duck dinner experience and we left with bag of leftovers that was packed by staff. We must have got the wrong bag, We has a lot of duck left and a whole bowl of duck fried rice leftover. However. We got 2 broccoli salads, a scoop of fried rice and no duck! It was not our leftover from the table. Very disappointing.
Went for the December-only Peking duck special ... and we were _very_ pleased. Highly recommended.
Fun environment, choosing the right food (octopus and wings - sushi was average). Plenty of quality drink options (food is very reasonable, drinks on the higher side.). Had a window table with a view that added to the evening. Only downside which the restaurant staff could not help with - table of 4 next to us decided to have a 15, very loud fight, over how to split their bill.... Overall, if you have not been, go
Departure was a great anniversary date place. It was pretty loud, but it was Saturday night. The dress code says smart casual, but there were definitely families that children were wearing sweatpants. Chef Gregory is very creative, and the food was amazing! The design of the restaurant is also very creative. Servers were friendly, prompt, and courteous.
The service at Departure is outstanding. Far better than most restaurants in Portland. We appreciate that as vegans we can eat here with non-vegan friends; and, we have our own vegan menu.
We’ve been enjoying departure for years. Being vegan, it’s not easy finding tasty options at most restaurants. Chef G’s thoughtful & absolutely delicious vegan menu has made us feel special on countless occasions. So when I asked my son, Quinton, where he wanted to celebrate his 10th bday, the answer was departure. It’s his favorite restaurant. My mother-in-law took the train down from Seattle. My parents who just moved to pdx joined In as well. I was super excited to share my favorite restaurant with them.
We were seated at a lovely table. Our server came up & asked if we were here for the duck dinner. Then they realized we were vegans (by seeing the menus). No biggie, totally understandable situation. We said we were excited to be here to eat the yummy vegan food & celebrate my son’s bday. After hearing all of this, server detailed how the chef was busy in the kitchen “carving up a bunch of ducks”. The server even acted it out a bit. We were all stunned. Quinton looked as if he’d been punched. And my little birthday boy’s eyes welled with tears. Completely unfazed, the server walked away..
The server returned to inquire about our drink order. I explained that their duck comment had been incredibly upsetting for my son (& all of us really). Their face grew stony. With a hint of defensive irritation, they apologized, turned around, & walked away. Unfortunately, the damage was done. My kiddo was in tears. We got up, and left.
We are totally cool eating at restaurants that serve a variety of foods for a variety of humans. We know duck is on the menu during the holidays. It’s a departure tradition. But the server made us feel so incredibly unwelcome and uncomfortable. It‘s the end of an era for us. Birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, yummy food for no reason...it’s gone. And I’m super duper sad about it. I sent an email detailing our experience and haven’t heard back.
