Deno's Mountain Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Happy hour for several year has been great. Decided to have a relaxed family dinner. The food was great and large portions. The waiter was awful. He was very rushed, wanted us to make our order decisions at rapid fire, did not allow us time to enjoy appetizers before ordering next course then moments after soup and salad arrived delivered the main course. No time to finish salads, not even enough room on table for the unfinished course and main course. This is not a fast food resturant. We were spending plenty of money, not tying up a table for a few beers and snacks. We complained to hostess, they took $20 off the bill but what was hoped to be a nice evening was ruined. Someone should train the waiter properly or in the future we would tell the waiter o back off we are not here to help turn over your table.
The tuna poke and shrimp-cargo appetizers are my favorite things on the menu... that and the incredible wine list! Deno's is the nicest restaurant in Winter Park with an old-fashioned pub-type setting (dimmed lighting, historic newspaper clippings on the walls, sometimes can be loud for large groups).
John was a great waiter. We had the Filet- cooked perfectly and delicious and Ribeye-delivered med well instead of med rare as ordered, however it was tender and delicious👍Veggies were perfect and had a delicious unique seasoning. Skinny (homemade) margarita was fantastic. Passing through during Labor Day- no problem w reservation. Cozy booth, will recommend and return.
Anniversary dinner. Greeted nicely by hostess. Could barely understand our server as he was rushing around from table to table. He quickly took order, said an insincere 'happy anniversary' and ran off to next table. This was how it was through the evening. It was as if we were in Germany which doesn't have tipping and servers don't take a true interest in 'serving' diners; but merely function as deliverers.
We each started with French onion soup which was not very flavorful; broth was bland. Husband had medallions rustica which he said was well cooked. I had spaghetti alla trapanese with chicken. While the pasta was cooked correctly and well seasoned, with great taste of walnuts, tomatoes and red peppper; the chicken was stringy.
Very, very noisy.
Overall, not a great experience.
Deno's was exactly the Winter Park experience we were hoping for!
Amazing food, great servers-who even brought over water for our puppy- and a relaxing patio. Couldn't ask for better!
Everyone was very kind, and engaging.
I had the vegetable curry, and it was all I could do to not lick my plate. We also had one of the pizzas and the burrata caprese which were also really good.
Deno's has been a favorite of ours for years. However, their fine dining skills have slipped a little. It's not the "real food" gem of the past. Components of our meal were contrived and missed in the honesty category. The beef tips were like something from a prepared carton I would buy at Costco and just heat up. The cauliflower purée which accompanied the fresh fish of the day was cold beneath a warm halibut fillet as if the plate had been prepared too far ahead of the seared fish. We expected a better dining experience on a special Friday night during our mountain getaway.
What a wonderful evening! Great food, wonderful service. We sat outside and enjoyed the great weather and beautiful scenery of Winter Park. Our waiter was personable, informative and accommodating. It was my sons birthday and they presented him with a delicious piece of apple pie, candle and all! Make this a must-visit in Winter Park.
We've eaten at Deno's for over 20 years ever since we bought our place in Winter Park. There have been times that it has been hit & miss, especially when they dropped my favorite chicken saltimbocca from the menu, but overall we were satisfied with our times there.
Tonight they missed the mark big time though. We both ordered Caesar salads-- which tonight came with a variety of tomatoes scattered thru out the salad. I mentioned to our waiter that I had never had a Caesar salad anywhere before with tomatoes, and his response was "Oh?". In the past, the dressing has always been very good-- tonight it was just okay.
Since they don't have my chicken saltimbocca on the menu again, I ordered the Medallions Rustica medium (which I've had before & enjoyed). They've decided to add a few shrimp to top this dish now, and it did nothing for it-- primarily because the shrimp were under cooked. I would swear in the past the meat came on a bed of mashed potatoes, but tonight it was a piece of mushy bread under the meat. The medallions were at best medium well bordering on well done, but they still were okay, so I didn't complain. What ever the side vegetable was-- forget it-- because it was awful.
My husband loves salmon so he ordered the Scottish Salmon, and when they sat it down, it looked great-- a very nice sized piece of salmon. But the center was grossly undercooked and the sauce on top was cold. He told the waiter that the salmon was way undercooked and the response was some long winded explanation that left us looking at each other like "what??". I suggested they re-do it, but considering it took a half hour to come out the first time, my husband didn't want to wait that long again. The waiter never offered any kind of solution.
Ultimately the manager did discount the total ticket $9.60 to make up for the raw salmon. But no one ever said we're sorry your meals weren't up to par or anything.
Deno's is always good. We particularly enjoy the appetizers there, especially the burrata caprese, the Gorgonzola fondue and the French onion soup. The Mexican street corn is a good new addition.
I was very glad to see that they have some new additions to the menu. The spaghetti alla Trapanese was very good. I like the pizza as well.
Service is always great. Meagan was our server last time and she is very nice and super organized and efficient.
Thanks to the owners for being in Winter Park for so long!
We enjoyed our entrees, and the "mountain bistro" ambience. Overall, our dining experience was good, not great. Service was very good. Food on the heavy side, and cnot particularly inventive. We will return as it is a perfectly acceptable option in Winter Park, just not exceptional.
To start with, the food was amazing and the atmosphere was just as wonderful. Then the best part of all was our server "old brian" as it said on the ticket, but he was amazing with his overall service and knowledge of wines helping us pick out what we ended up loving! Definitely a place to go visit!!
Deno's was recommended by our hotel, and told that they had the best burger in town. We went in on closing day and were told that the restaurant would be closing that night so a lot of things were 86ed. 2 out of the 3 apps we wanted were unavailable. We ended up with a tuna poke, beet salad, and burgers. The poke and beet salad were super tasty. The burgers were over cooked, and missing the cheese we ordered on it, but cheese was on the bill. The meat tasted like the patties were really old. Maybe the burgers were cooked to temp but the meat had oxidized and no longer had any pink to them. We didn't send anything back or bother our waitress to address the problem. Our waitress had the whole bottom level to herself and seemed really overwhelmed, she only visited our table 3 times through out our hour meal. Thank goodness for food runners and bussers.
We were scoping out potential venues for our rehearsal dinner and Deno's had come so recommended from multiple people, that it was a real bummer to be let down. Hoping that it was just a circumstantial incident, and everyone was checked out since it was closing day. We will have to check it out next time we're Winter Park. Fingers crossed.
I don't think Deno's is what it used to be. Menu limited, loud, mediocre service, kind of a dive. It rates an OK for once in a while now; it used to be a mainstay. This is the first time this ski season we tried it after less than stellar experiences last season. As better places become available in the Winter Park area, Deno's falls further and further behind. It's a better bar than a restaurant in my opinion.
