I usually rave about this place, and took and out-of-town friend there for dinner Saturday night. While everyone else's food was wonderful, unfortunately mine was not. I ordered the smoked salmon crepes. It was WAY too salty. When I mentioned it to the server, she simply stated that's the way it is. When something is too salty, how can a person continue eating? They offered no option for me. I let it go. And ordered dessert. I figured it would make up for the oversalty main course. I was wrong. The creme brulee was OVERCOOKED. So disappointing. Creme brulee is one of my favorite things. Additionally, I'm a trained pastry chef. I know what it should be. And that is not it. My advice? Make sure you can tolerate a full mouth of salt, or avoided the crepes. And avoid the creme brulee. For a French restaurant to serve overcooked creme brulee is a crime. What a disappointing meal for me.

Long time patrons of La Bergerie, this was our first visit to DRC. This was an excellent end to our vacation in France. We were able to share authentic country French cuisine with the family that did not travel with us. The atmosphere was casual, but service and food were excellent. Not at all surprising that the restaurant was busy on Saturday night. Since we were off schedule from traveling, we ate savory crepes which were quite satisfying without being heavy. Presented artfully with mixed greens, it was just the right amount of food. I also ordered the crisp fresh French peas to share around the table.
Laurent was on property and visiting with his guests. In true French style, we felt welcomed into his home rather than into an establishment. Glad to find this very accessible source for French cuisine.

We enjoyed the food and they put down a mat below my daughter’s height chair so her food would not fall on the carpet.

Third time and very disappointed. I spent over 120 on myself. Overpriced and under wowed.
Even worse, the kid who met me at the door and checked my reservation was unwelcoming and tried to seat me in a empty room.

The food is both wonderfully prepared as it is presented. You are easily made to feel you are in a French country bistro/restaurant. Our only distraction was the gaps in service. We waited too long for drinks to be refreshed or refills of wine.

We enjoy the cafe. My complaint is the martinis... Mine was good but you need to take a close look at a martini glass. It should be FILLED to the brim with ice crystals dancing across the top (unlike wine). The food selections and quality are terrific.

Recommended by a friend who lives in London and could not believe that we had not tried this gem in "our backyard." Went to lunch with another couple. Seated at an upstairs table that was not too close to other tables. We felt as though we had taken a ride in the country and happened upon a fairytale inn. Food was great! Hanger Steak with garlic frites for the I don't give a d___ guy. Wife said the quiche with ham & spinal was the best that she ever had. Friends had cod and an omelette. We split two desserts: yummy flaky crust concoctions that the waiter recommended we order when we ordered our entrees as it takes time to have them ready. Really Lovely.

Assembled a large group of 11 together for dinner on a Saturday night. Reserving table a few days before was not a problem and seated immediately even though three members of party were running late. Three bottles of wine, a mix of appetizers and entrees, two orders of hot beignets , coffees and teas, and a 20% tip already added in came to $680 which I thought was very reasonable considering the quality of the meal. Dover sole, lamb chops and duck were among the more popular dishes. Will return.

This was our first visit to the Del Ray Cafe and we had a good evening. We did not realize that the restaurant was upstairs because it is difficult for two of my friends to use stairs and there is no elevator. Perhaps the restaurant should let this be known on their website so patrons could request a main floor table. There are a few tables on the main floor but the atmosphere is not inviting. And the porch was way too casual for a nice dinner. The hostess wasn't very welcoming—didn't say hello or seemed to care if we were there. Maybe she was having a bad night. She made no effort to seat us on the main floor even though she know the stairs were difficult for my friends.

The noise was a huge problem and would be the biggest reason we would not return. We all wished they could do something about the noise! The food, however, was excellent and organic. The waiters were nice and professional. We enjoyed large salads and escargot for starters, and rabbit and scallops for our main dishes. The apple tart was good, but not fabulous. I would order a different dessert.

We enjoyed a small carafe of wine, but did not know what brand it was or if it was organic. It would be nice for the DRC to let their customers know what they are buying.

We thought the prices were high but fair because it's organic. We wished the atmosphere wasn't so casual and loud, though. It would not be a place to go for a special occasion.

I loved my visit to Del ray. All of the food was delicious and he beignets (which you order ahead of dessert) are better than those in New Orleans. We inquired about accommodating a large number for a special lunch and they have a private room on the first floor for such events. The menu is extremely wide ranging and everyone can find something to eat. The staff was great and the hostess was very friendly. We will return!

First, the food was excellent--every dish. But the deafening loudness of the room ruined the dining experience. Our large group couldn't enjoy each other's company because we couldn't hear. We couldn't order any specials because it was Impossible to hear he waiter. I just don't understand why restaurants think patrons prefer his kind of atmosphere.

Great little place in a quiet neighborhood. Food was average to good; I am not sure that a runny chicken salad should be placed in a crepe though, but it was tasty.

We won't be back. Requested outdoor table via open table, which I know is subject to availability, but another couple arrived seconds before us, and they automatically offered them the last outdoor table, forcing us to wait for over 30 mins. It was our choice, but it was frustrating. I ordered two glasses of wine that had no description and no specific prices listed (house wines by glass are only listed with a range of $10-16) on the menu. The second glass was never brought to me, so I reordered it once at out table. The price does matter to some people! We finally got seated, and were told the preparation of the cod was not as described on the restaurant week menu. They made it anyway, but why not serve what was advertised? The vegetable risotto was lukewarm and boring anyway. The cod portion was pretty small, but tasted good. Portions were clearly miniaturized for restaurant week. The beet salad was tiny and had maybe three or four slices of beets. A 7oz hangar steak came out overcooked, cold and chewy. They replaced it quickly, and it was far better, which tells me the kitchen could have tried harder the first time. We were still hungry after our three course meal, and ordered a cheese plate, which was pretty good. Funny story, we asked about the cheese options for the 5-cheese plate, and learned they only had 4 different cheeses and just give a double portion of one them! To top it off, they charge $3 for bread (though a few meager slices do come with the cheese plate), which is ridiculous since given the pricey food and small portions. I had higher hopes because I love Del Ray and French food (I use to live in France), but we just didn't enjoy the experience at all.

We weren't seated for our 7:00 reservation until 7:35., despite an original estimate of a ten-minute wait.

There is no space to stand while waiting, so we were constantly dodging waiters and bussers. After the first 25 minutes of waiting we were finally allowed to perch on two stools for the last ten minutes.

We were promised upstairs seating - the manager decided not to allow any seating upstairs at the last minute and we were seated (at long last) on an outdoor porch without air conditioning.

Waiters were inattentive (forgot wine order, no check-back to see if meal was good, forgot requested item, broken fork replaced by salad fork).

I didn't know it was Alexandria's Restaurant Week - they should never have accepted a reservation when they were clearly unprepared to handle their guests.
